its $2 a DAY, not hour. This sort of rhetoric from the uber-rich should be deplored, I dont know how anyone can defend her contempt for humanity.

I'm sure if Gina donated $2 for every man, woman and child in Africa who is starving, in need of medical treatment, or simply living in poverty, millions would have a better chance at life.

Gina is greedy, overweight, unattractive and her children despise her.
The billions of dollars clearly aren't doing much for her, but would definitely help a lot of other people in need.

oh, you forgot, after we spend that $2 everyday on a little food to keep us alive...so we can keep on working....well, we are broke, and therefore must be drunk and lazy drug addicts!!!

this lady's employees ought to bring their cots, their families, their favorite recliners and set up camp in her office. when they are asked what the heck they are doing, they should tell them...

"We're just showing the boss just what to expect if she ever gets that cheap $2 a day labor she wants"!!!!

Those with a sense of wanting to manipulate and rule over the masses undeservedly usually have never earned the position (not that such a "position" should be even allowed to exist), which would at least perhaps put some perspective and a damper on their narcissistic, sociopathic ways.

Look at the Queen. She's been riding off the back of her far distant relative William the Conqueror's victory for 946 years for crying out loud.

Here is a "nicely spun" rebuttal from I guess the main stream newspaper defending her actions

Prime Minister Julia Gillard verbals mining magnate Gina Rinehart over Australian wages cut talks GINA Rinehart did NOT call for Australian wages to be cut to $2-a-day African levels. The Prime Minister's suggestion that she did was pure, malicious - and you'd have to say, only too typical - Gillard verballing. Rinehart didn't even call for wages in the resources sector that can easily top $150,000-a year to be cut by a single cent. Her only reference in either her commentary in Australian Resources and Investment magazine or her YouTube video to cutting wages, was a single passing reference to whether reducing the minimum wage would help small and medium businesses employ more people. Gillard's $2-a-day smear was simply ludicrous. Yes, Rinehart is an attractive hate figure. She makes a great political pinata for Gillard, her treasurer Wayne Swan, and assorted cronies in the media. www.heraldsun.com.au...

Reducing the minimum wage? You do realise how hard it is to live on minimum wage right now don't you? So what she is suggesting is making the poor poorer... She is a disgusting human being and I hope she dies of ass cancer.

I will say this ....

if wages were cut to $2.00 per day, then rent, mortgages, utilities, food and other things would also have to be cut to less than $2.00 per day as well to make all things EQUAL.

funny my idea would be to increase how much the africans in that country
make and not bring that country to africas level.

i mean do we really want the world to come down to that level? instead
of building it up should we really tear it all down? do people like her
forget that if we all only make 2$ a day we wouldnt even be able to afford
her end products, there would simply be less money all around to be had.
id rather have workers making 50$ a day and buying my end products with
some of that money then too poor to be able to purchase anything at all
even basic necessities, then many would die from malnutrition and
not having a home or disease because they lack clean water which
means more training, which costs more money....

now on the other hand one must agree in some situations the pay for a worker is far
too high, i know folks who make 30$ an hour in the US who sit in a shack
and watch movies all night. that is simply overpaid.

This is a major problem, and it doesn't end with this disgusting woman.

All of those in this wealthy elite think that they are above others, that they are "rulers", and that they deserve what they have while telling others that they need to live on the bare minimum.

This woman is basically calling for slavery, she's calling for the rest of her nation to become slaves to people like her, so that people like her can become even more wealthy through that labor.

There are not enough words for me to use to describe how disgusting I think this woman is, but she is just one of many sickening examples of insanely greedy people addicted to wealth and status who believe the same kind of BS.

In reality, she's no worse than the politician or leader giving corporations and the wealthy tax breaks, they just know how to fudge their words to make it sound acceptable to the uneducated.

Well its not like she can move the Australian mines to Africa and abuse the African labor and its unlikely the Africans can be brought over on ships to work for slave wages - So I guess she is stuck paying the people who work for her (feel sorry for them) competitive decent wages - ah how sad for her - she can't be a slave owner

Profits before people will destroy this world.

If she keeps making ridiculous statements like that she gonna find out just who does have the real power in this world.

Go ahead ... keep poking and prodding and making fun of that sleeping giant.

Those mines don't work themselves.

So she inherits tens of millions of dollars. Takes control of a billion dollar business that her father built; currently "earns" $2 million per hour. Proceeds to say that if you're poor/not wealthy then you're a lazy drunk. And ends it by saying you should work for $2 per day....

Ok I think my brain just melted.

You think she's bad just remember there are plenty more like her with their untaxed wealth sitting offshore who keep out of the limelight by staying quiet or infer we could could all be like them if taxes were lowered and industry de-regulated.

Whats that they say ? 'Any press is good press'..... In this case, I think she has inflamed the ire of all Aussies, both rich and poor. Her suggestion is obviously absurd, as Africans would never work under the conditions and pay she suggests unless they were nearly hand to mouth starving. There is no way anyone could survive with this $2.00 pay. You would have to sleep in the dirt close to the pit/mine and have to pay nothing to do so, and have access to water, which there likely is none. We have a name for her type here in the USA........... bloviating ignoramus....

$2 a day or hour, whatever...it's a ridiculously low number and it's what is being paid to hundreds of millions of people right now. But. It's not what Rinehart is saying Australians should be earning, it is what African competitors are paying their workers right now. Today.

All she has done is said the truth and the idiots lap up the rhetoric and spin like good little sheep.

Can you address my other points about QANTAS, call centers and the like?

Why would a call center pay someone $18/hour + super +sick leave + holidays when they can get someone in India to do the same job for $5/day?

It's a travesty!

But it's also what's best for the business.

Rinehart is right, along with the strong dollar, Australia is pricing itself out of a lot of markets.

If anyone can counter what she says without the name calling and pettiness, I'm all ears, right now though, "she's fat and ugly and rich and I hate her" just isn't cutting it.

Oh yeah it's obvious we should all live like they do in third world countries. Can't everyone see they should be the role model, the example of how everyone should live.

People in the third world dream of living like us but they have it all wrong we should all be living like them.

I got an idea why don't YOU go to India if its so great. You do want to help those businesses right?

This is why globalism is being pushed by the elite. It makes them rich and everyone else slaves ...

Nice strawman argument.

It's not what I'm saying and you know it.

Clearly, you've never run or been involved with running a business, if you have, you'd understand the point she's making.

Clearly you've never worked for $2 a day ...

We shouldn't allow a business to do business over seas with sweat shops and bring their goods back here to be sold for enormous profits. Their goods should be taxed at the border enough that their sweatshop labor can't compete with our domestic labor.

What? you say we couldn't afford that stuff if it were made at home? We did at one time because we actually had manufacturing and a real economy. Those people working manufacturing jobs making good money will be spending that money - IN OUR ECONOMY. What a concept!

There is now way around it FREE TRADE means outsourcing labor, manufacturing and a lowering of living standards in first world nations.

So your suggesting importing poverty to accommodate her greed? You then by necessity have to drop the standard of living and mean costs to the impoverished nations level where the African workers come from. Thats the only way they can afford such niggardly wages and maintain a family.
