How many here have actually watched all of the Rinehart video?

I suspect very few.

So, how about you guys watch the video, then we can discuss what she says in the video, not what the MSM wants us to think she said.

I thought ATS was all about alternative news and not lap up the MSM tripe???

Anyway, here's the video:

Enjoy.

Time to live by the sword my "open minded" friends!

I actually met her once about 6 years ago when i'd just finished uni and was working at an exploration camp drilling out one of her joint venture mines....

...And she was just as miserable as everyone thinks she is; that is until we got a few beers into her. Then she loosened up and the drillers tried for the rest of the night to get into her rather large pants just so they could say they bedded a billionaire. These guys were hitting the end of a 3 week rotation and getting a little anxy so anything with 2 legs and a pulse was fair game. Also she wasn't quite as porky back then...

And this is what happens when the average welfare mom strolling through Walmart becomes super rich... Because if it weren't for her inheritance, you just know that is what she would be. Life is all about circumstances.

Nice strawman argument.

It's not what I'm saying and you know it.

Clearly, you've never run or been involved with running a business, if you have, you'd understand the point she's making.

And what point would that be?

To see if she can get away with saying wages should be brought down to $2 dollars a day? It is like someone walking into your face screaming profanities at you and then when your about to do the natural thing in response, they go all: "I didn't mean it..etc".

If Rinehart meant something else she should of said something else. She didn't though did she?

well.. i'm absolutly gob smacked how dear that horrific woman even utter such crap. After all that hippo inherited her money. This is my first post on ATS & basically it took a post like this from her to make me join. We all have to stop people like her. If she had her way the world would be a horrible place

Elitist leeches with an extreme case of narcissism; love to control "regular" humans & think their financial status puts them in a position do so with no moral obligation.

Oh indeed, and she probably wonders why she's unloved and unlovely. However, she is definitely a chip off the old block when it comes to assuming a divine right to use other people's labours to enrich herself further.. Her father was ruthless and arrogant too.

I realize what you intended to do, but, in reality, you've done very little to kickstart a discussion. You've not explained your opinion of the video you posted....

Have YOU even watched the whole video? Because, I personally see no evidence that you have!

I could post a video and say "Hey you people need to discuss this video, but I don't have time so, anyway...I guess you'd best get started...Good luck!"

But.... Why??

Clearly you've never worked for $2 a day

I'm currently working for less actually.

About $0 a day for the last few months, that's..wait let me get the calculator out...that's 0 times 30...equals...ZERO! A month!

Yep, I work 10-12 hours a day 6-7 days a week and earn nothing.

As a small business owner, this is what has to happen, especially in the current economical climate.

It's not ideal but at least my business is still operating, at least I can still pay my apprentice's wages.

It's a massive gamble of course but there aren't very many businesses that turn a profit in their first few years of operation.

We shouldn't allow a business to do business over seas with sweat shops and bring their goods back here to be sold for enormous profits. Their goods should be taxed at the border enough that their sweatshop labor can't compete with our domestic labor.

Maybe we shouldn't!

But how many will then do business with us and buy our exports? Which is about 20% of our entire GDP by the way...

What? you say we couldn't afford that stuff if it were made at home? We did at one time because we actually had manufacturing and a real economy. Those people working manufacturing jobs making good money will be spending that money - IN OUR ECONOMY. What a concept!

Can't believe I have to spell this out for you...

Back when we manufactured everything was when the only way to get stuff we needed was to put it on a ship and wait weeks for it to arrive or make it ourselves.

The cost and time made making our own things then was comparable.

Now, not so much.

Tell me, why are all the call centers sent over seas?
Why did Bluescope steel cut 1200 jobs in the last 12 months?
Why are Ford and Holden struggling so much?

It couldn't be because there are cheaper markets out there are there?

There is now way around it FREE TRADE means outsourcing labor, manufacturing and a lowering of living standards in first world nations.

Maybe it does.

Our little mining bubble here in Australia is very close to bursting.

If it wasn't for our close proximity to China, it would have burst a long time ago.

I have no answers to this problem but I can see what Rinehart is saying, if we can't stay competitive, then EVERYONE will suffer.

Even people who don't work in the mines.

High wages is just one problem, the other is our stupidly high dollar.

That, in my opinion is where we can get back our competitiveness.

I watched the video ...

She makes the case that Australia is not competitive because it is too expensive to do business there ...

No doubt this is true ... globalism and free trade makes it that way naturally ...

Then she says that taxes imposed on businesses further undermine that competitiveness driving up the costs to do business ...

Again this is true ... first world governments the world over are driving companies away from them through excessive taxes.

Then she states that imported cheap labor (temp workers) is the answer to completing that pipeline.

She doesn't say that Australians should work for $2 a day but I think she is saying that Australian labor is not competitive so you do the math.

Again nations used to protect themselves and their economies through tariffs. Corporations, which are now as powerful as countries, want to profit from a free trade global market. They get their guys in office that intentionally drive away corporations through taxes. Thus making it all just a business decision.

Globalism is about the enrichment of a few at the expense of the many. Most of what they pay people in these third world countries are just sustenance living anyway. There isn't enough money paid to the laborers to create better conditions. They say "they are willing to work for ..." well of course they are, but couldn't you throw an extra dollar an hour in so that their conditions might actually improve? Or does that not fit into the business model of make as much money as you can for as little as you can regardless of the impact on the lives of real people.

She should be fighting to have Africans get the same wages as Aussies, not the other way around. She reminds me of an officer I overheard during my time in the service, when he thought no enlisted were in earshot, he reffered to us as "cattle".

This is disgusting!!

I see Slavery is still ripe in the World (as if I didn't know already)...

Wow, $2 a day? This wouldn't even buy me a loaf of bread in some parts of London!!

The best hint that I've watched it is that I know and acknowledge that she doesn't say anything about Australians should work for $2 a day.

That alone is more than what the majority in this thread have done.

Gina knows exactly what she's saying. She's already got the government to allow her to import cheap Asian labour too.
They'll be stuck out in the Australian desert and she'll be able to treat them as she wishes. If they complain she can cancel their visas and they'll be deported.

Exactly how is this imported labor going to live? Surely they must be making so little that they couldn't live like the rest of Australians otherwise whats the point of importing them.

This is how it is done here in the US as well. Cheap immigrant labor from Mexico. They have to live 10 to a house just to make it.

This is why no politicians in the US will do anything serious about stopping the flow of illegal immigrants ... its propping up whats left of the US economy.

When our economies (US, Australia, Europe) are destroyed who will buy all that stuff being made? Those poor laborers? nope. China?

The goose that lays the golden egg has already been killed now they're fighting on how to carve it up.

Does it not concern people that Australia's labour costs are 35% higher than the gulf coast of the USA?

Scarier still is the fact that illegal immigrants working there don't come into official figures.

So in reality, the figure is much, much greater than 35%.

And that's comparing two first world countries.

Does that not add some perspective?
