A Sydney doctor who is a member of the Exclusive Brethren Christian sect has been banned from practising as a GP after he prescribed chemical castration to a young man who sought a ''cure'' for homosexuality.

www.smh.com.au...

This behaviour is disgusting and appalling as much as it is improper; the Christian doctor got off very lightly, he should be in thrown in gaol, or given the same medication that he prescribed the young man.

His abuse of power and his blinded by faith viewpoints may have harmed this young man for the rest of his life.

I am sure that this goes on more than what we know; religious fanatics in high profile or public services that push out-dated and inappropriate responses to people that require real help or assistance from them should receive greater penalties for their actions.

This thread just adds weight to the fact that religion does cloud better judgement and logic.

Those crazy Brethren

I didnt know you could have yourself chemically castrated.

Dr Craddock gave him a prescription for Cyprostat as well as five repeats. The drug, which lowers libido by reducing the amount of testosterone, is used to treat prostate cancer and severe male sexual disorders and sexual deviation. Read more: www.smh.com.au...

This medicine will decrease your sperm count, but this change is reversible on stopping treatment. This medicine can also cause more of your sperms than usual to be abnormal in shape. It is possible that these abnormal sperms could produce birth defects. For this reason it is recommended that you use contraception to avoid fathering a child during your treatment. You should discuss this with your doctor before you start treatment with this medicine. The decrease in your sperm count will not happen immediately and you should not rely on this medicine for contraception at any time.

Sounds like they are being hard on the doctor.

edit- thats an interesting topic. I know a chick that wouldnt take the pill because of it lowering sex drive.

This is disgusting! When a GP prescribes a medication it is ultimately the patient's choice whether or not to take the medication!

So now the wrong prescription can be the death of a hard earned career?

I am sickened to death by this. The GP prescribed an Anti-androgen...That's all it was!

Another point:

He did not refer the patient to a counsellor or a psychologist, despite the drug manufacturer's recommendation, and did not order a liver test or discuss the side effects, which includes impotence.

The ex-doctor did not care about the boy and just wanted to cure the 'gay' of his disease, or worse, kill him.

This in my opinion deserves more that deregistering; it should be a prison term.

As the OP stated ...

Part of the issue here is not sending the patient to a psychiatrist or psychologist first. Just making that quote bigger:

Craddock admitted he did not obtain a medical history, conduct a physical examination, take an adequate sexual history or arrange a follow-up appointment.

He did not refer the patient to a counsellor or a psychologist, despite the drug manufacturer's recommendation, and did not order a liver test or discuss the side effects, which include impotence.

Dr Craddock conceded it was potentially dangerous for a patient to have that much medication unsupervised. He said, in hindsight, he should not have prescribed it at all.

Anti-androgens are prescribed to transsexuals. Prior to prescription they require a physical, medical history, sexual history, and appointments with psychiatrists in many countries. This doctor prescribed a drug incorrectly and the media has jumped on it trying to turn it into a gay issue.

Regardless of the doctor's opinions on the patient's orientation there is a reason why things like this go through several doctors at once. I would no less want anti-androgens given out randomly for people who think they might be transsexual any more than I would want them given out to gay people who are uncomfy with their orientation.

I think the doctor recognises what he did wrong, and the media are trying to get a rise out of people.

Well the common argument is that they are "born that way" yet that makes little sense, as child molesters could make the same claim.

I don't buy into that.

Am I born to like ketchup? Am I born to like iced tea? Am I born to like the color blue?

Not at all, even better. Are you born needing to have surgery so that you can enjoy ketchup more?

Then he should have lead him in the right direction rather than give him dangerous meds. He wanted help because he was or is still confused about his sexuality, if it was not for his church, he could have received proper counselling and support rather than just receive dangerous drugs.

If he is homosexual, then he needs to come to terms with that rather than be told he is ‘wrong’ and should be ‘cured’.

Wait a minute *snip* If a woman can do anything to her body she wants to - legally and get any doctor to do the operation.. including and up to a full sex change, then how is this any different?

It's not.

This doctor should be restored his GP and given a medal. He didn't coerce the gay dude to have this treatment, he gave the kid an option and the kid apparently took it. He was a GOOD Doctor.

Your reply here doesn't wash. The Kid was seeking a cure for his homosexuality - by your own words in your opening post. The kid was not seeking counseling to come to terms with his affliction.

You want to have it both ways don't you? Your twisting the reality of what really happened to support your agenda. Now that's sickening and disgusting.

A medal????????

The doctor was a General Practitioner not a psychiatrist or specialist of any kind that should be handing out drugs to handle sexual issues or mental illnesses.

I actually spend a lot of time in Australia. Aussie doctors don't give you hormones here generally. For special cases they send you to a endocrinologist after a psychiatrist. It's recommended in anti-androgen leaflets that come with the pills that a referral should happen in most cases.

So there's some 'general' cases that might not happen. Chemical Castration is not one of them. PLEASE think about that phrase for a full minute or two. It doesn't actually 'cure' anything, the person will just have a reduced libido and the chance of developing things like gynecomastia (male breasts) and having a higher risk of cardiovascular disease as well as reduced muscle mass.

Honestly, do you wake up in the morning and casually say to your friend ... 'I think I'll pop down the local GP and get chemically castrated this morning'. At the very least the person should have been referred to counsel and at least the possibility of them having other issues investigated. What if the person was actually a sex criminal trying to self reform? What about associated issues like depression?

I realize you all want to focus on the word 'gay' in this headline but really? I never thought in all my days on ATS I would actually have to convince people not to take pills.

I'm just gonna have to assume the world is ending and start putting all my money into tinned food and shotguns after this thread.

Incorrect, a woman can choose to have an abortion (and that is her right) but a woman cannot have a sex change without proper counselling and referrals from many doctors... it takes years. You can’t just walk into a hospital or go to a doctor and say “I want to be a man today”

The GP, full of religious dogma did not do the right thing. In a position of power, the kid would have listened to anything he said and done whatever he was told was the right thing by the church - which as most can see - is an incorrect thing to do.

Quote: “The Kid was seeking a cure for his homosexuality” - Because he is part of a church that does not accept homosexuals, he thought he was wrong to feel like that – but as we know, he should not feel different or be treated differently because he is homosexual.

I do not have it both ways, but I can see that perhaps it is you that has a problem with people’s sexuality traits and obviously people that are ‘confused’ should just be treated as freaks or given medication to cover up what they feel…. because that is obviously better than facing the real you?
