This could have been much worse. The shooter had a AK-47 with a full clip, he started shooting and hit 2 people before his weapon got jammed. He then went out and threw a molotov cocktail at the entrance. He could have killed / injuried many more people. This is a sad day for Quebec.

Premier and Prime Minister are the same. You can say either/or.

They are two different terms given to two different parties in English Canada. In Quebec, there is no distinction (in terms) between the national prime minister and the provincial premier. When the Saskatchewan premier goes to Quebec, they refer to him as the prime minister of saskatchewan so no one gets confused with the real prime minister. No other province or territory has called its leader a prime minister since 1972.

Thanks for this bit of info; it's the first time I've heard of this. I worked in Ontario for 12 years and never noticed the distinction. And you're right, we say Prime Minister in Quebec. Then again, there is no French translation for "Premier".

Our country's head is the Prime Minister, ie PM, the provincial leaders are premiers. As if a great movie is rolling.

I've never heard of a such thing after an election in Canada. So sorry for the victims.

Forget the propaganda and find the real numbers. Don't forget that Quebec pays 50 billion in income tax and sales tax to the federal governement each year. So paying back 8 billion in equalization payments still means we are not getting back what we pay into it.

No. I thought they were a separatist party.

I thought it was a liberal/progressive/....what ever you want to call it. An extreme leftist. A multiculturalist. A monarchist.... ?
www.nytimes.com...
The party is separatist so why would I think the shooter was separatist?

Not sure about what you mean. The Quebec separatist party is conservative. Not leftist. NDP is leftist, and I vote that.

The Bloc Québécois formed in 1990 as an informal coalition of Progressive Conservative and Liberal Members of Parliament from Quebec

Far too conservative for me.

The parties represented in parliament are as follows:

-PQ (Parti Québécois). A separatists center-left party. It is an amalgamation of several independentist parties from the 60's and 70's, some right-wing, some left-wing.They were founded in 1969 and first came to power in 1976. They held a referendum on independence in 1980 which was lost 60-40. They were re-elected in 1981. The Liberals ruled after and held a referendum to try to re-integrate Quebec within Canada (Quebec never signed the re-vamped constitution of Canada in 1982). 60% of the people voted against it. In 1995 the PQ were re-elected and held another referendum on independence, this time, the "no" camp won by about 13,000 votes (out of more than 4 million). The PQ were re-elected in 1999.

-Liberals. They are separate from the federal Liberals and have no ties. They are also a center-left party. More business-oriented, the main difference with them and the PQ, at least in philosophy, is the stance on independance. The Liberals are federalists. They have been around since the mid 1800's.

-CAQ (Coallition Avenir Québec: Coallition for the Future of Quebec). Led by an ex-PQ minister (who was a radical separatist at the time, but now claims to be a federalist), they incorporate the old ADQ party and turn-coats from the PQ, but mostly from the LIberals. The party was formed last November. They are right-wing.

-QS (Québec Solidaire). They have 2 elected members. They are a left-wing separatist party. They want true socialism and women's rights as well as integration of immigrants (recognition of foreign diplomas, etc).

When did they become LEFT? They are a very conservative party and always have been, we follow politics enormously and understand it, my father got an NDP win in the riding I grew up in, first and only time, and when he was the head of the local chapter.

They're a blend of liberals and conservatives and are not a social democracy party in the least.

The news is still a bit fuzzy. What we know for sure:

-The shooter was wearing a bath-robe and a ski mask. He was carrying an AK-47 with a modified clip (at least 40-50 rounds) and a 9 mm. He shot two technicians who were having a smoke outside, while waiting to take down the stage. It's still unsure whether or not he made it inside.

His AK-47 jammed after only a few shots. A fire was lit (arson, molotov cocktail, some other sort of incindiary device? It's still unclear at the moment). He was taken down, physically, by a cop before he could use his 9mm. It is possible, from helicopter pics this morning that he also had a sawed-off shotgun. I would like to emphasize the word possible, the images were not clear.

One of the technicians is dead, leaving behind a 3 year-old daughter, the other is now doing well, thankfully.

The shooter was taken to a hospital this morning after complaining of illness.

That's what we know for certain at the moment, anything else is pure speculation. However, the whole political caste is in shock this morning.

Well, you haven't been following politics as closely as you think, they have always been center-left. Every leftist program in the Quebec governement since 1976 was initiated by them.

This calls them left of center, and it has no understanding from a political science PIE what left is. The liberal party of Canada is just right of Center. The NDP is just left of center on the World Wide Pie. Our conservative parties are quite significantly Right of Center and some have been very close to the Fascist Line. That is something that was taught in universities. I guess they wanted the vote of the students for they've been always considered quite RIght Winged by NDP'ers. Wolves in Sheeps clothing and no one I know calls that party left.

Maybe they've revamped it?? Do they have some NDP recruits in it?

Rene Levesque was conservative in his policies. He was talked about alot. We'll see what her policies are. You're for the people or for big business. For the constitution and substantive equality or not. Its quite easy to see. And if you were for equality you'd be changing the home business rules and allowing home businesses in every dwelling and promoting small businesses, and toppling monopolies, true free enterprise not monopolies, that is fascism.

By the way I love our form of representation.

www.threehundredeight.com...

They were projecting a possible majority win on 34.1%

Who the hell could ever call this a democracy.

Norway's system means you don't waste votes at all, every vote counts, and there is Unity, no extremists, because there are more parties, some grass roots ones, and they have to get along.

I like that.

Hmmm, let's see, Quebec received 8.3 billion in equalization payments or 60% of the total equalization budget for the colony of Canada. Here's a Linky for you ;-) That 8.3 billion is above and beyond any federal tax transfers, so if Quebec taxpayers paid 50 billion (you might want to get real numbers as I did), then they received 58.3 billion back ;-) The 60% of the equalization budget is for 23% of the population of Canada, which is about 35 million where the population of Quebec is about 7,750,504 (2008).

Seems a bit weighted in the wrong direction, I can't remember a time when 23% of the people warranted 60% of the budget so that they could give grief to the balance of the colony of Canada (a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of London, just like OZ, NZ and others). So.... you were saying something about propaganda?

Cheers - Dave

Multicultaralism here was forced on us in Canada in attempt to make the French in Canada a small minority (we represent more or less 25 % of the population across the country). In Quebec we were originally brought into Canada in 1867 by a corrupt government who rigged an election. We have been fighting to get out ever since. And our economy is in great shape, we have not suffered at all throughout what's happening around the world.

I don't know if I'm misreading your post... it leaves the impression that in 1867 Quebec was on it's own and that couldn't be further from the truth.
Map oc Canada 1867

I mean if this whole shooting was over the separatist ideals, everyone needs to look at the bigger picture. Most of Canadian land was treated by the natives... who should be THE nation within a nation in my opinion. The french want their way, what about the Germans, Hungarians, British and Irish who built this country?

I grew up on the Ontario-Quebec border and when I was a kid, Gaelic could be heard in my areas being spoken. Now, if you speak English there, you are treated as a second class citizen in ONTARIO!!!
That is why I moved far away from there. My father was Parisian French, but I refuse to be forced to use the language. French is Canada is so slang now, that it bares little semblance to what it's supposed to be.

Why does Quebec want to separate? I have to tell you, I think the whole logic is treasonous.

~shrugs~ at least they caught the guy and you honestly can't please everyone at once. The voters have spoken and elected this woman.... Grab the popcorn, I think we're all in for a helluva ride!

Police said the 62-year-old suspect is not from Montreal but is a Quebecer. They aren't sure if he is an anglophone or francophone. They said he was speaking both languages.

Quebec provincial police are also looking into a report that a PQ member had received threatening messages prior to the attack....

The man shouted in French at TV cameras while being dragged toward the cruiser, "The English are waking up!" Police would only say that he spoke with an accent.

Police said the second shooting victim, who was taken to hospital in critical condition, was no longer in danger by about 7:30 a.m. ET Wednesday.

They don't even know if he's English or French, but know he is from Quebec.

What does he mean, the English are waking up?

Also ,apparently he was wearing a bathrobe?

Must be something major to get her own guards shooting at her. Good thing for the gun laws in Canada are so strict can you imagine if anyone could get a gun there illegally like the US

A lot of different responses to this shooting here by the various politicians.

www.thestar.com...

However, the premier's is promising some kind of harsh penalty, whereas we already have the court systems and laws in place, so either he is posturing, or is he going to try and make our legal system worse than it already is?

That he was in bathrobe speaking of waking up is some indication they want to categorize him as a conspiracy researcher perhaps, but I think its some kind of firm warning to the separatists to not rock the Federal boat.

When Harper pushed for a majority government, he did so calling 3 elections, I'd never seen anything like it, back to back almost.

The second minority, the NDP got far more seats than it ever had, (I beleive it was the second time) and Jack Layton suddenly is diagnosed with aggressive prostrate cancer and dies. Prostrate cancer is not a fast acting one, most elderly men have it, its quite common. They usually don't do the kind of surgery my father had because it can be treated with other less invasive ways and people who have it die of old age first, before they die of the cancer.

I believe a certain element behind Harper's government didn't want the NDP to gain seats that would upset their conservative majority plan.

I wouldn't put it passed this "element" behind Harper, to try and give her a firm warning to not overstep her boundaries.

They seem to be all about NWO and hidden fascism now and I think this was telling her, our way or the grave.

They may have killed the Kennedy's outright, but apparently here in Canada they seem to murder to silence the oppositions too. This is what I think its all about. Massive intimidation for those who might ruin their plans or speak out.

Couldn't agree with you more, Unity_99. Jack's rise in popularity and votes, leading the party so successfully - and then his passing from illness such as it was.
Yeah what a farce - Harp had to do 3 fct-up elections to finally get his "win".

Side observation: upon reading, I noticed the shooting was at the Metropolis?
I guess security was a touch lax? He was wearing a bathrobe and didn't warrant attention?

Sad day.
