In theory the idea works but sanity could be considered relative.

Who would you deeming insane? Someone less sane than yourself?
Would all of the God-followers be considered for this since their belief is based on a faith?

The same faith that a less sane person puts into their beliefs?

It's a very thin line to tread imo.

ATS should be open for all to interpret how they desire, including crazies,
for the sake of argument we should keep them around I would believe?

Again, Sanity is relative, without those crazies here, the sane/sound ideas wouldn't hold as much merit.

They bring that side of the debate for people in the right of mind to come in and set the record straight.

That's just it. I'm 100% serious. Do we ignore someone showing suicidal tendencies and call it silly? One person sending a u2u to a mod is like an average Joe walking into congress expecting to be heard. I was hoping to gain some support in this thread in order to add some weight to the issue presented. Now I expect this thread to be deleted, with the issue swept under the rug. Isn't that what all governing bodies do when an issue isn't held up to public scrutiny?

My son went through some serious depression (thanks education system), I explained to him how life is constantly changing and gave examples to him of the good, bad and how the best is always ahead somewhere...I didn't put him on drugs or get him locked up... because all he needed was love and an ear... so here or where ever I run into that situation, that's what I will give because I don't think you can change someone's mind if it is set... I also think when someone talks about it, they are reaching out for those things ok.

The issue you presented is "crazy" in my opinion but, I guess that's because I know history and what that kind of harm that kind of thinking has done in the past. I have taken a few years in psychology, I quit when I learned it can be used to objectify any human society desires to objectify and has.

America is talking about preventive type policing...so when people start calling authorities on their neighbors and others (out of fear or revenge) because "the state" says this or that is a sign of danger...we are headed towards repeating the same nightmares of history. I personally would rather not see people do that...... I guess the education system is failing in the area of history as well *sigh

Hey, you raise good questions. If an alcoholic is known for driving drunk, for his own safety as well as for others, should he be banned from drinking establishments or from buying booze? I don't know. But if so, this doesn't mean he should be banned from going to the cinema. See what I mean?

Drinking establishments have their rules and do ban people.
So really your hypothetical question brings us to a question that has already been answered in our history. Prohibition doesn't work... Most of us agree some people abuse substances, some people don't and still some are just accused (had to put that in there because it does happen). If the drunk is caught drunk driving he should have to go to court and if proven guilty, take the punishment prescribed by law.

I get this feeling that you are all stuck on banning people for stuff ... may I ask what gave you this notion that people should be banned from society or parts of society?

As for my mood saying 'slap you silly' I would actually feel a lot safer with someone venting their anger with words, than with someone appearing calm but expressing disorganized thoughts. Wouldn't you?

Actually, anger is a symptom like a pressure cooker waiting to explode. If the cause of the symptom is not remedied/resolved the pressure at some point could be too much and you could blow up anytime.

We just don't know you...you can possibly be far more dangerous than a person with disorganized thoughts... think about it, your thoughts are organized (assuming)...you can plan revenge.

The disorganized thought guy might want to do something but is less likely to be able to effectively create and follow through with an action plan..... Even though you think you are not dangerous, do you realize that other people might think you might be?
Do you think that it would be OK if society banned you because they are afraid your words MIGHT turn into actions if some comment puts you over the edge? Or would you rather not be in trouble unless you actually get violent?

Jiggerj, if someone is mentally unbalanced, they will do something crazy with or without ATS. None of us here should feel responsible if the person does something crazy. Hmmm. how do we know that we havn't actually helped someone instead by offering advice when they were open to it?

If someone is mentally ill, they are most likely nonviolent. If I remember correctly, these are the numbers: 26.2% of people in the US have a mental illness. The number of mentally ill murderers in the US, on the other hand, is 5-10%, depending on the source. In a Canadian survey, only 3% were mentally ill out of a population of recently arrested violent criminals. For there to be a correlation between mental illness and violence, the percentage of mentally ill violent criminals and/or murderers would have to exceed the percentage of mentally ill people in the general population.

That is to say: no, mentally ill people should not be banned just because they are showing symptoms of their disorder. That is just silly. We're stigmatized enough IRL, to meet the same discrimination on a website as "out there" as ATS is incredibly, incredibly silly.

If you won't alert members that you have concern for or worry over, then why would you even begin this thread? Not one, but two members of staff voluntarily showed up, of their own accord, to offer you remedy to your grievance and you simply dismissed it.

When it's all said and done, here is the stark reality of it. Staff are here to enforce the T&C and to keep things civil. I am not a medical doctor or a psychiatrist and it would be reprehensibly irresponsible of me to act as if I were. It is not my place to try and evaluate or treat any health problems for a member, psychological or otherwise. The best I can do is what any member can do. Offer support. One look through my posting history ( even my recent posts ) will show that I reply to all threads about psychological problems universally with the advice to see a doctor or to listen to doctors and family members. That is as humanitarian as I can morally be. Anything more would risk giving bad advice to an ill person.

Some posts may seem irrational or disjointed to you. Many appear that way to me. But if they remain inside of the T&C and are not, in and of themselves, so disruptive as to become problematic, even in a passive or unintentional way - the most staff can do is to delete such posts. But we can only do this if we are aware the posts exist in the first place. Thus the alert and complaint systems. Load up the Forums tab and look at the number of members, the number of posts, and then count the number of staff members. There is no way that we can read every post on the boards.

Frankly, if you fail to alert posts that you consider problematic, then that is on you. Not the staff.

I understand that you feel like you're trying to be compassionate to the community and to the individual(s) that you are refusing to speak of. But the truth is that, after four pages, nothing good has happened for anyone.

Food for thought.

The mentally sound have better things to do than to post on Conspiracy Theory Sites..lol..But all seriousness aside..when considering the scope of human Psychology...it stands to reason that people who would be attracted to this sort of forum...just might be a little off kilter..(and I don't even Know what Kilter means)...

Who among us hasn't had a "crazy" moment? I would be very uncomfortable reporting another member, and have witnessed sevaral occasions where someone here is having a "meltdown" and other members talk them "down" so to speak....if it goes too far, the Mods generally step in.....but someone would have to be violently extreme for me to contact a Mod....if someone has the "blues" and is saying sucidal things, perhaps I would reach out to them U2U and offer an ear...not much more a Mod or any of us can do for them.

And who would make the decision? Personally I think fundamentalist christians and members of the GOP are mentally ill, but I would not recommend banning them. Because if you don't believe in free speech for everyone, you don't believe in free speech. Yes, the individual you are talking about was a member; yes he did show classic signs of disorganized and delusional thoughts; but who are we to judge? I'm wrapping up my Master's in Psychology and would not want to consider judging a person's mental health solely through posts on the internet.

I think evolutionists are mentally ill, but my opinion is just based on the fact the brain that can create ideas came from a single cell that appeared after an explosion of stuff that never existed ....so what do I know?
