I am reminded of the story about Aron Ralston, a mountaneer who cut off his arm after 6 days pinned under an 800 pound rock in a canyon. I'm sure he learned alot of survival skills over the years, but I do not believe anything can prepare us for such a scenario when you literally give up a "piece of yourself" to survive. It's the survival instinct such as animals use as they readily chew off their limb if caught in a trap. In an excerpt from his book, Ralston describes what he was feeling when he was so "close to death."

"“I got it that I had to settle down or I was dead,” he said. “I knew the pain wouldn’t kill me, but my response to it would. Dehydration would, infection would, hypothermia would. I was a mechanical engineer, I was trained to figure out options.” From the book, "Between a Rock and A Hard Place."
Whether we are "prepared" for all types of disasters or not, I don't believe most of us will just lay down and die.

We do survive every moment, after all, except the last one. ~John Updike

I disagree, they want dependency.

Self sustainability is the ultimate freedom.
