Just like everything within the cosmos, the nature of the universe is to come into existence and then end at some point. And, every separate thing within the universe ends by transforming its energy into something else, so too will the universe shred itself and be reborn. Just my opinion.

Dr. Crusher: "Computer, what is the nature of the universe?"
Computer: "The universe is a spheroid region, 705 meters in diameter."

- Star Trek: The Next Generation, "Remember Me"

But seriously...

Q: What is the nature of the universe?
A: The world may never know.

The answer is so obvious. The nature of the universe is to exist.
It does whatever it does.

It has absolutely nothing to do with us and that cuts the ego to the marrow. Which is why this Truth is the greatest hidden secret that tears at the fabric of all our being.

The universe can be understood only by the wind,' Leto said. 'there's no mighty seat of reason which dwells within the brain. Creation is discovery. God discovered us in the Void because we moved against a background which He already knew. The wall was blank. Then there was movement.'

-Children of Dune [Frank Herbert]

I'm assuming your appreciation for that quote stems partially from understanding it, at least a little.

Bearing that assumption in mind, when "God" discovered us, who is 'us', exactly?

in the context of the novel, this is stuff leto II is saying
during his test of humanity, the 'us' is humanity
though it could mean sentience
[see yourself in god's POV, discovering mankind or adam moving against the blank wall]

in the context of this thread, i originally was only going to post
the 1st sentence, but left the rest of the quote

What Is The Nature of the Universe? is one of those questions that require deep contemplation
and ironically introspection

idle speculation wont even scratch the surface

basically op's been asked this question as a call to seek the deeper meanings of things
perhaps he's shallow and superficial, or perhaps its merely proper filial piety
you don't want members of your family especially younger ones just drifting through life.

to answer the question he has to make room inside himself

create a universe of his own

because, to quote Trismegistus: "the like, is only intelligible to the like"

wind=air=breath=spirit=movement

to understand The Nature of the Universe requires a gradual approach,
requiring the understanding of The Nature of...
well Every-Thing, including the Wind

in the context of the series and the ideas and concepts being discussed:

the universe is an empty canvas, upon which to paint your desires

any questions?

its nature is awareness. Its function is, recycling it, rebuilding it over and over to keep it youttful so it lasts forever. Thats the best i can do with an explanation.

Remain youthful forever? Immortality is a scrap bargain. There's no point to existing forever unless you can perfect yourself. But what is perfection? A lack of desire.

This is one of those questions that doesn't have an answer...it teaches us how to think, and in the process of finding that answer, we find other answers that we had to work for, and that makes the understanding these other answers bring us that much more precious. More simply put, it's what we find along the way. Kind of like taking a road trip. It's the journey, not the destination.

The universe is immortal and has its own purpose which may simply be driven on by the greatest force there is. survival!

That's pretty much it. To experience itself. It wants to see what the possibilities of free will can bring about...it wants to experience free will by giving pieces of itself a mind of their own and letting them go play...

Guess we decided to take the lincoln logs and build an atomic warship. Oops...there goes the "harmony and unity" plan...

The universe is constantly progressing towards a higher state of entropy.

That's all you need to know.

Although Entropy is a state in which all things eventually cease or degrade. The Universe is also in a current state of a form of Evolution of Matter and Energy. All Elements we know of on the periodic table are the byproducts of either Stellar Fusion or Supernovas. It seems that Matter continually arranges itself over time into greater and more complex Molecular States...thus DNA and Life being a byproduct of Universal Matter Evolutionary Arrangement.

Now we currently know that DARK ENERGY is causing the Galaxies in our Universe to accelerate away from each other and eventually they will be so far apart that they will not be able to be detected. Of course the Human Species maybe long extinct before this...but it makes one wonder if there will be a BIG CRUNCH or if Space/Time Geometry will shrink since the existence of Matter and Energy is what Creates Space/Time to begin with...thus ENTROPIC PRINCIPLES may only exist in specific conditions.

Entropy is based on LINEAR TIME but Time is really not LINEAR in all dimensional states. Nor is there even an existence of Time without a certain number of Space/Time Geometric Dimensionality. In a One Dimensional State...there is no time nor is there an existence of Matter or Energy. As far as we know...we need at least 10 or 11 dimensional States for Matter and Energy to exist...yet all Dimensional States must adhere to connectivity to other Dimensional States. Thus...GRAVITY is an expression of One Dimensionality and this is why GRAVITY IS NOT A FORCE...no matter what you were taught in High School or College. With the exception of GRAVITY...FORCE is required to place an object of Matter in Motion. Gravity has no Electromagnetic Push or Pull, has no Particle Bombardment such s a Solar Sail or a Laser that moves a disc skyward or Kinetic Force that like a Office Desk Toy of 6 Steel Balls in line on a pendulum where you raise one ball and it swings and hits the next of Five others in line and Kinetic Force is transferred from the one swinging ball colliding with the second ball and this ball does not move as the Kinetic Energy is Transferred all the way to the 6th and last ball that raises up and swings up and back where the whole process starts again and Kinetic Force raised the First ball. If you use 2 Balls the two in the middle will stay put and the number 5 and 6 ball will raise and swing together leaving 3 and 4 motionless. This is Kinetic Force. So we have Kinetic, Magnetic, Massless Light or Photon Bombardment Force...but GRAVITY IS NOT A FORCE! In all the other cases there was either an Electromagnetic Particle Attraction or repulsion or a Photon Concentration that although a Photon or Light has no real mass...if concentrated...it can interfere with an Atoms Electron Orbit or Orbits thus A Force of Movement but NOT GRAVITY! GRAVITY is the result of an existence of Matter or Energy as they are interchangeable and given enough Matter or Energy...say like the amount of Matter thus the amount of Mass that is present as the total number of Protons and Neutrons in the Atoms and all of the Atoms Nucleus' of a CELESTIAL BODY like or Planet or Sun or Moon....the Greater the QUANTITY OF PROTONS AND NEUTRONS then the Greater the Curvature or Warping or if a HUGE amount of Mass is present...or Energy to represent that Mass...FOLDING of Space/Time. So I drop an apple from my hand...it falls...WHY? NO FORCE IS EFFECTING IT as to be a FORCE there must be either an EM Field to attract or Repel...or Kinetic Force as if I threw the ball at the ground but I just dropped it so no application of direct kinetic force...or Particle or PHOTON Bombardment which is a Force of Repelling an objects Electron Orbits or Orbit...so we have GRAVITY. What is happening is that the Apple is not being Forced to MOVE it is actually not even in MOTION...it is EXISTING ON DIFFERENT POINTS OF POSITION IN A ONE DIMENSIONAL EFFECTED CURVE OF SPACE/TIME DEPENDENT UPON THE AMOUNT OF EFFECT GENERATED BY TOTAL MASS AND BY PASSING OF LINEAR TIME. This is why it does not really move but we perceive it to move as it is simply existing at all points in a One Dimensional State. SI
