Free speech or offensive? Those are two viewpoints regarding three political billboards in Hanson that are getting the attention of everyone who drives by Sullivans Inc., a motorcycle accessories distributor off Route 27.
There should be no question here. These billboards are protected free speech.

The billboards are on private property and are the epitome of free speech. How can this town even think they have the right to remove them?

These sorts of billboards only appeal to a very specific group of people. And while I do not support Obama, I do support free speech. So they should stay...... as long as I have the right to tell these people that they are stupid.

It's all good!

Free speech, indeed...though, as mentioned, there are such things as municipal sign by-laws.

Thanks for the reply, but I am really more interested in having some of the liberals come tell us why this is not to be protected as free speech.

That is your right to say so. That is what free speech is all about.

Well I'm not a liberal, but I can tell you that free speech only goes so far. Do you have the right to erect a billboard sign on private property with foul language next to a school or death threats to certain individuals?

Speech is speech...this is advertising mixed with political free speech. It's not so black and white.

The signs are on private property. People SHOULD be allowed to do as they wish on their property. It is an example of governmental overreach when people have to worry about the government interfering with the placing of signs like this on their own property.

While free speech does have inherent limits; ie when it could cause harm to another(shouting fire in a crowded theater being the common example), foul speech does not qualify as one of this limits imo. Who defines foul? What is "foul" to me may not be foul to you and vice-versa. That gets onto a slippery slope very quickly imo.

Also, I did not see any advertising on those billboards. Why do you say advertising is involved? It seems clear cut politically oriented to me.

I love those billboards! The only problem with them is the "Vote Mitt Romney" bits at the bottom. I find that offensive!

Agreed. Vote Ron Paul would have been much better.

Where were these billboards when Bush was in office? I would say they would have applied to him more than they do Obama.

He has every right to say it as long as he accepts people have the right to call him a bigoted asshat for saying it. Which people probably will.

See Beezer's post above. Those billboards were present and much worse was said about Bush.
Disclaimer: I voted Bush the first time, but not the second. The "Patriot Act" ended any and all support I felt for the man.

IMO it is political advertising against Obama. Just like Beezers sign is against Bush.

Billboard signs on the side of the road I do not think qualify as 100% free speech.

But like I said.....keep it there. It does no harm, except maybe for the people that put it there.

Well, yeah. That is what it is supposed to be. He is expressing his opinion, which is his right. IMO, "Advertising" is like a four letter word and usually involves businesses trying to make money.

Sure, it is free speech.

But if it was in my town...I would use my free speech to protest it and petition my local government to act on it for the sake of public decency.

The Constitution gurantees that no laws will be passed to restrict free speech...it does not say that you can not be censored in public.
