A magnitude 7.9 earthquake has hit the eastern part of Philippines, triggering a tsunami warning for the region.


According to the US Geological Survey, the major quake occurred on Friday at a depth of 33 kilometers (20 miles) at 8:47 p.m. local time (1247 GMT) some 139 kilometers east of the city of Sulangan.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan and Japan following the tremor.

www.presstv.com...A tsunami danger period can continue for many hours after a major earthquake. Tsunamis also may be generated by very large earthquakes far away in other areas of the ocean. Waves caused by these earthquakes travel at hundreds of miles per hour, reaching the coast several hours after the earthquake. The International Tsunami Warning System monitors ocean waves after any Pacific earthquake with a magnitude greater than 6.5. If waves are detected, warnings are issued to local authorities who can order the evacuation of low-lying areas if necessary.
