Neurosis is a class of functional mental disorders involving distress but neither delusions nor hallucinations, whereby behavior is not outside socially acceptable norms.[1] It is also known as psychoneurosis or neurotic disorder, and thus those suffering from it are said to be neurotic. The term essentially describes an "invisible injury" and the resulting condition.

So to be neurotic was to suffer distress and to display behaviour that is outside the 'socially acceptable norms'. Hmmm. Would it not be a natural reaction to be distressed by this horrible world that we live in? Wouldnt you be a psychopath if you could just shut it all out and focus on yourself? Are neurotic people crazy or is the world a crazy place thats full of crazy people?

The DSM has chosen to eliminate the catagory of neurosis. My theory is its because us neurotic people are the only ones that are actually sane.

The American Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has eliminated the category of "neurosis", reflecting a decision by the editors to provide descriptions of behavior as opposed to hidden psychological mechanisms as diagnostic criteria,[3] and, according to The American Heritage Medical Dictionary, it is "no longer used in psychiatric diagnosis".[4] Instead, the disorders once classified as neuroses are now considered anxiety disorders.[5] These changes to the DSM have been controversial.

So now if you are 'neurotic', then you have 'anxiety'. That is a disorder. You need a pill. I say bosh. Neurotic people are the only ones that are not crazy.

I think that psychology is a new religion. Any heretic is labelled as having a 'disorder'. Heretics are pacified by pfizer and the like.

"A time will come when the whole world will go mad. And to anyone who is not mad they will say: 'You are mad, for you are not like us.'" -St. Anthony the Great

The time has come.

Sanity is just majority rules. There are more insane people than sane ones if you ask me. Why arent you all neurotic? You should be. Whats wrong with you all? The world is [SNIP]ed. We should all be worried.

Im sure they invented pschology to take over from religion. Psychology is used to control populations and to keep them passive.Jesus was a fan of telling people not to worry too.

Matthew 6:25-34 New International Version (NIV) Do Not Worry

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Jesus seems to forget that squirrels store acorns for the winter. Squirrels do "store away". Even a dog will bury its bone. Jesus seems to forget that he does not provide for all these animals. Many animals starve. Many people starve. Its a very good thing to worry about how you will prevent yourself from starving to death tomorrow. Worrying helps prevent starvation. Worrying about problems helps you to find solutions to problems. Jesus/the Romans wanted us to be a bunch of lemmings.Psychology wants us to be a bunch of lemmings.

Im a proud heretic. Im quite concerned about a great deal. I worry about many things. I have a disorder.

Its a conspiracy I tell ya! Dont listen to Jesus. Dont listen to Freud.

I say be like the squirrel.

And you are not crazy unless you are not crazy.

I agree.
There are many health issues (mental and Physical) that no doubt need addressed with people but
If I get a poorly stomach walking home late say 2am for the sake of it from the stress of the unknown ahead, mixed with paranoia of who else might be out and about. Heart races a little. Get home and feel lethargic from the walk.
Does that make me Neurotic? or Perfectly normal?

I guess the difference would be if it happened all the time in lots of different situations I could probably be diagnosed with something and maybe rightly so.

Yeah, I agree. Its a funny thing to try to define any of this stuff. Where it begins and where it ends. But I do agree that mental issues do exist and I know people that have had geniune anxiety attacks. I wonder if there might be a reason or simple explanation though before I would say they had a 'disorder' and gave them pills.

Interesting, OP. Didn't know the DSM got rid of the category either.

I got mixed feelings about your conclusion, though. My hubby has a classic case of neurosis, and it's a mixed blessing. See, he cares a lot about everyone and everything, which is absolutely wonderful. But he also carries the weight of the world to the degree of dysfunction, and worries himself stupid, blaming himself for all kinds of things he has no fault in whatsoever.

His Mom's been quite infirm, gets worse all the time, and he has devoted himself to her care, which also involves caring for his Dad (whom is alot like Cotton AKA Hank's Dad in King of the Hill) and his sister with Down's syndrome. He does more than you can imagine a son doing for his parents, he is so good, yet he blames himself anytime anything goes wrong. Things that are very clearly not his fault whatsoever. He keeps blaming himself for his Mom's stroke and way more. Which is definitely crazy.

So, I see what you're saying about neurosis having an up side. I do think it's a disorder belonging to nice people only, so I much prefer it to sociopathy or psychopathy!
But it also sucks because it causes nice people to suffer too much.
