Need some help here.
What the hell is this all about .

Why the different areas of concentrations?

Some of the stations are dead or mobile.

www.iris.edu...

It has to do with the electromagnetic studies of the continents.
Something to do with earthquakes, but I could be wrong.

What are your thoughts on this.

It is the USA's 10 year seismometer program, it will have mapped the whole USA when it is done.

The USArray component of EarthScope is a continental-scale seismic observatory designed to provide a foundation for integrated studies of continental lithosphere and deep Earth structure.

They are offering their data online as well.

I think it is ambitious and hopefully the data will give geologists a better understanding of the crust/mantle, I am not a geologist so I can't really comment on the implications.

I'm no geologist so I guess I hope it leads to finding rare-earth elements (so we stop buying so much from China), I am sure they will go over the data looking for unknown oil!!!

I suppose a better understanding of fault lines and plate tectonics is possible as well, that could be helpful knowledge someday. I expect the benefits will not be noticed by most of us anytime soon, but science for science's sake is good too (in my opinion).

I think they started in the west and are working east so they have a while to go it seems.
