Looking at the vid in the OP, the field shown does appear to have grass/whatever that is "about" 8 inches high, and the creature's head is just poking over. From the pic one cannot be sure that it is even lying down, that makes for a pretty small lion, not that it even looks like one in the first place.
And i have seen some pretty freaking large pet cats .
However, i do believe there are big cats wild in the uk, but i dont believe for a second that this is a lion..

It was clearly not taken up-close. Even if it was shot with a compact cam and a zoom lens at its max tele or a max wide - you still have no reference for the size of that thing.
Poor quality due to magnification and lack of reference make it hard to understand what it really is.

One thing which is puzzling me is where are the rest of the photos?

If i saw a lion in a field and was taking photos for proof I would be snapping like crazy, then they would have had action shots standing up sitting down rolling about as they claimed...hmmmmmmmmm.

My cat was a Maine Coon and way bigger than this cat but even in long or short grass it is clear that even these cats aren't LIONS.

There are witnesses that say they watched it for a while, they seen it and it wasn't on their cameras so they should know if it was something the size of a lion.

A normal digital camera has a zoom built in. You don't need a fancy camera to use a zoom. Look, people make mistakes. Maine Coons are larger than an average cat (very friendly and good with children). The one who heard him "roar" has some 'splainin' to do, but the evidence is in.

As the BBC says:

We think we've found the cat which started the Essex "lion" hunt. He's called Teddy Bear and he's a Maine Coon cat, which are bigger than your average cat. His owner Ginny Murphy thinks it was Teddy Bear which was photographed. But whether it was Teddy Bear or not, the "lion" hunt really caught the public's imagination.

And if it was indeed Teddy Bear, then the description - in some quarters - of the police search as "operation pussy cat" would seem all the more accurate.

Source

The owner says the cat likes that very same field and frequently goes there. The coloring in both pictures is identical. No way the first picture looks like a lion AT ALL. You have all the evidence you need, really. The only really silly thing here, other than hearing the "lion" roar, is that after all this evidence is presented, people still think it is a lion.

I'm going with Schuyler's post, in all likelihood it is a misidentification of the neighbours Maine Coon domestic cat.

A woman has claimed sightings of a "lion"- which sparked an extensive search by Essex Police - were of her large pet cat, Teddy Bear.

A search for the "very large animal" seen in St Osyth, near Clacton-on-Sea, on Sunday was called off on Monday.

Ginny Murphy said her ginger Maine Coon cat, the largest domestic breed, regularly wanders into the field where the animal was spotted.

She said she believes Teddy Bear was mistaken for a lion by holidaymakers...

...Ms Murphy, of St Osyth, said: "From the picture, he's identical - he's big, he's always out in the fields.

"Maine Coons like to hunt, and where he was is a particular area he likes to go.

"He's always coming back with birds."

Her three-year-old pet is about 28in (70cm) in length.

'Essex lion was my pet cat Teddy Bear' - owner

A lion doesn't exist in a vacuum, there would be some trace.

Essex Police have not released any details of the cost of the search, but have said about 25 officers were called to where the animal was seen, including specialist firearms officers and experts from Colchester Zoo.

Two police helicopters, one with thermal imaging equipment, were also used to try to detect any trace of an animal.

Yeah more than likely presented with the evidence the Maine Coon 'Teddy Bear' is the most likely cause.

Can't believe the guy is still adamant the 'Big Cat' is out there.

We all make mistakes but a large domesticated cat and a lion???? Really?.......

Lions must eat 10-15 pounds of meat per day.

Many of the fields in the videos of the area, are littered with sheep, but no missing sheep have been reported. I will go with the Maine Coon cat story.

The thing that makes me think is, surely if that pet cat is local, the people who spotted it wouldn't have thought twice and just assumed it was teddy bear... But for them and others to call the police saying it was a lion? After 20 mins of watching it, they should have been able to spot the difference.

The cat was local, but the people weren't. Read the article, the folks who called the cops were 'holidaymakers.' That's UK speak for tourists.

The kitty in the picture is pretty obviously not a lion. I question whether anybody who thinks its a lion has ever actually seen a lion, or indeed even a picture of one. Count on the police to overreact, expend their resources at the taxpayers dime all for the chance to play with their fancy toys.
