Rachel Corrie death: Israel rejects all blame

The US activist Rachel Corrie, whose death beneath an Israeli military bulldozer made her an international symbol of Palestinian resistance, bore sole responsibility for the incident that killed her, a court in Israel ruled.

The parents of Corrie fought back tears as a judge fully absolved the Israeli army for the death of their daughter as she tried to prevent the destruction of a Palestinian house in Gaza in 2003

This news is very sad
Sad for the family and sad for Israel, just as the mother puts it

“We are, of course, deeply saddened and deeply troubled by what we heard today,” her mother Cindy said. “I believe this was a bad day – not only for our family but for human rights, the rule of law, and also for the country of Israel.”

She stood on raised ground and spoke in a megaphone, but the driver didn't know she was there.... sure!

This is very sad news
I feel bad for the parents not being able to get any accountabilty but instead nothing but something less than a shrug of the shoulder.

This is ridiculous, I hope the family appeals and wins the appeal on this horrific court decision.

It is sad that a young women was run over by a bulldozer.

It is also sad that people are trying to convince others that the bulldozer driver did it on purpose.

An IDF officer testified that Corrie and other activists had spent "hours" trying to block the bulldozers under his command. On that day, they were only clearing "vegetation and rubble", and no houses were slated for demolition.

He went on to say that it was "a war zone where Palestinian militants used abandoned homes as firing positions" and exploited foreign activists for cover.

He shouted over a megaphone for the activists to leave, tried to use tear gas to disperse them and moved his troops several times. "To my regret, after the eighth time, (Corrie) hid behind an earth embankment. The D9 operator didn't see her. She thought he saw her"

Dan Shapiro, the US ambassador to Israel, told the Corrie family last week that Washington remained dissatisfied with the way Israel had handled the incident. He has previously said that Israel’s investigation of her death had been neither credible nor transparent.

Of course he did it on purpose, and with the intention of killing her, and getting away with it. "I was just following orders". Isn't that the excuse Nazi's used. Is this any better?

Is anyone seriously surprised?

I'm not bashing Israel, even the IDF here. Whether this kind of behavior is systematic to the whole of IDF or just this one bad bulldozer driver is irrelevant to my post. BUT! You could hardly expect any other outcome of an investigation, when it was IDF itself that investigated the issue.

I don't imagine that you care.

Some eyewitness accounts indicate that when Corrie slipped and fell, the operator may have been looking behind him.

The bulldozer operator, a Russian immigrant to Israel, was interviewed on Israeli TV and insisted he had no idea she was in front of him:

"You can't hear, you can't see well. You can go over something and you'll never know. I scooped up some earth, I couldn't see anything. I pushed the earth, and I didn't see her at all. Maybe she was hiding in there."

I remember debating this story back when it happened. If I recall, the general consensus was that it was her own fault. Someone posted the clip from Austin Powers where the man was crushed by a steam roller moving 1 mph. It still applies.

Rachel's parents are absolutely correct about this being a sad day for all parties involved. Israel has claimed complete innocence in this incident since the very beginning which is not surprising as they never admit their guilt in any situation.

What is even worse is that various ATS members have blamed Hamas for her death which in my opinion is the strawman of the century.

Same questions apply to her don't they? Stand in front of a bulldozer and you risk getting squished by it. Simple.

The people who were there to bulldoze the homes of the Palestinians, should have called the proper authorities to have her removed, such as the police. Surely they could have waited a few minutes until the police arrived and have her forcefully removed before continuing to bulldoze.

I understand your point, but it's not logical. Reversing my statement doesn't work in this scenario.

Her family sued for $1 which shows this wasn't about the money. They simply wanted those responsible to admit their culpability.

Their disregard for human life is sickening. How often does this happen to non-Americans? Unfortunately those cases hardly make the news due to America's disregard for human life.

The sad part is that woman's tax money help to buy that bulldozer and contributed to that drivers salary.

Did they call police? I honestly don't know.

I see it as six of one, half a dozen of the other.

They should have been more careful; she shouldn't have put herself in front of a bulldozer.

Had it been a Muslim driving the bulldozer you would be here posting quotes from Hadiths and Quran telling us how bad Islam is. Rachel was murdered, yet you are here justifying the man did it. Sick

Islam is a negative from a Western perspective because Islam as a force seeks to push Islamic religious rights at the expense of Western secular rights.

There is nothing in the Koran however about running people over with bulldozers.

Do not let emotions cloud your judgements.

There is no need for anyone to apogize for anyone, including even you, for your emotional state is comprehensible.

There had been 5 INDEPENDENT investigations to the case, and presented before the court, with independent expert witnesses called on by both sides.

Allow the impartial Rule of Law to take place, where facts are discerned, instead of relying upon emotions for support, which will have only far reaching and painful consequences for all. Enough of mankind had died.

If the family wins on the appeal, so be it. If the family loses, so too, must it be accepted by all.

Let us all learn from those mistakes made, and progress from it, instead of letting it be a baggage weight everyone is to bear forever.

Just want to point out that witnesses stated that people ran over to the bulldozer screaming at him to stop but he wouldn't.

I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the driver at first, even though it was terrible.

However looking at those photographs, considering she was wearing a hi-vis jacket, as well as speaking through a megaphone, coupled with the people who were shouting at the driver to stop, I find it highly questionable that he was unable to see her.

Not only did the bulldozer run her over, it then proceeded to reverse over her.

I believe her last words were:

"My spine is broken."

How anyone can even remotely try to condone that action is beyond my comprehension.
