TWO French journalists taken hostage in Iraq in August are still alive, and "indirect" negotiations have resumed to try to free them, French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin told officials today.

Reporters Georges Malbrunot of Le Figaro newspaper and Christian Chesnot of Radio France International, kidnapped on August 20 with their Syrian driver, are "safe," according to information Raffarin passed on, politicians who met with him said.

Negotiations to try to free the two hostages are in place. The two along with their driver were kidnapped on August 20. Concern is mounting in France after the recent gruesome beheading of Kenneth Bigley. A reported video showing the two hostages, Malburnot and Chesnot on September 22, showed that they were still alive and unharmed. A recent report is speculating that Syria might have some involvement with the detention of the journalists.
