It is strange...my friend in florida is under mandatory evacuation. that seems a bit strange for a tropical storm / cat 2 hurricane.

also, giorgio tsuakalos from ancient aliens just posted on facebook to GTFO of the way of this hurricane.....strange

They are under that because there's only 1 road out of most of Florida.

New Orleans is getting out the same way, because it was too late for Katrina, when it was finally clear it was coming. We "run" a little more easily because it's better to run than float from Bourbon Street to Esplanade.

But:
If this thing is nothing more than a 2 when it makes landfall, I'm not leaving. Our nutcase of a sheriff wouldn't let us come home when the roads were clear. Gustav, that.

I was watching the weather channel earlier and they had a new hurricane expert who was not given the memo on "make sure you freak everyone out" and was actually just doing his professional job.

The regular anchor was trying to get him to expand upon how bad the storm would be - how the storm surge was still a problem for Tampa and the expert was just like "Uh, no, the estimates for the wind, rain and surge need to be revised downward, the storm surge will not be a problem..."

It was actually a bit comical.

Still too early to tell what will happen to NOLA, but I hope they ask that expert again!

If you live in the area of concern, you know at what level of preparedness you need to be at.
Cat 1 or 2 ,well you should be aware of trees around you,and flooding potentials.

You know the drill, batteries, candles, charcoal or gas grill full.
Car is full of gas, plenty of ice and beer.

Yes,been there done that.
They would station me at a hospital as a central location.
I hated it,couldn't be with my family to make sure they were safe.

Something to think about is all those men and women put in harms way to help others have families also.

I always keep emergency workers and Waffle House employees in my prayers during these things.

Yeah your right.
I guess I should just ignore the flood that's in my backyard and the fact I can't drive down my street.
