But i was a lot younger then.

btw there are 5 members according to wiki

Even in Russian, the group goes by the name "Pussy Riot," using Latin lettering. On February 21, 2012, five members[1] of the group staged an illegal performance,

That was the group Voina, of which the Pussy Riot members are also members of.

Actually it makes me kind of sad that so many people supporting Pussy Riot. The west is trying to screw us again, by using old tricks of making Russia look evil and backwards. Or is it corporations pushing cultural imperialism to further homogenise global culture for better market? Ancient aliens? Many theories I guess, but I will say this now:

They deserve what they got.

Protesting is legal here. If they want to make protest, they can do this. But is not needed for them to do what they did, brandish depravity like that. They broke the law. They got the minimum sentence.

I think, people like to protest for protest's sake. They see any, and truly I mean "any", excuse to protest for freedom and against big bad government, even if from a country totally different the culture of which they understand nothing, and join onto the tail end, because it gives them a sense of validation, albeit false. It is "underdog syndrome" where people support the smaller guys regardless if they are right or not.

I suppose now this women who ran from Russia will try for asylum or something - even if they don't get it, it will make Russia look evil, etc. Just as planned for Western cultural imperialism? People in other countries - how annoyed would you be if our media used all resources available to making your country seem like hell on earth, and ridiculing your culture, mocking your laws, turning you into laughing stock? And not just one-time thing, but relentlessly, over years. I seriously can't believe so many people are still so gullible.

If we'd like to go over the laws passed in the Russian Federation over the past 18 months that restrict or greatly chill free speech and expression, we certainly can. I already went through that on a past Pussy Riot thread...and generally, that would be where I see the biggest problem here with what happened to those 3.

It isn't that what they did wasn't wrong and just outright vile. It was. They should have gotten punishment for it. Muti-years in prison? Oh.. c'mon though. Putin is swatting a fly with a sledgehammer because the Russian Orthodoxy all but called for their heads on a pike right up to the last bit and end of things.

As I'd read, the public reaction and backlash against the hard core calls for far more (they wanted more than 2 years) softened things a bit. I guess that's relative though, when they are escaping the Russian Federation as if this were the old days of the Soviet Union and these were Westerners making a break for freedom.

Scary stuff to see what..again..has properly passed and become law or been very seriously suggested and still considered.

I didn't see any children present in the video you posted nor would I expect those involved in that "performance art" to allow any children to witness it.

I guess because you wouldn't "expect" them to "allow" any children to witness it, then that is the case

Please, enough with the excuses for these "girls" (I know better words for what they truly are)

"Performance Art"......yeah, if that is what you want to call it

So what about the men engaged in these acts with the "girls" ( I know what you want to call them, will you call the men that as well?) Also, do not critique my powers of comprehension, the phrase performance art was enclosed with quotation marks. You realize that was implying sarcasm as I believe I have seen you use the very same method. Ever been to a zoo? I've seen a fully grown female gorilla bend over and allow the male to enter her - in front of droves of children!!! What a "girl" !!

The first time I read the news about the arrest I LOLed because I saw just a dump and useless protest without anything useful to the world. They got what they wanted. Attention whore to much? lol

I am atheist and I thought what retard kind of protest to do inside a church.

Yes, the guys involved are absolutely just as despicable. What would make anyone think they aren't?

I missed the quotation marks around "performance art"....what would you call it then?

An animal in the zoo is a far cry from human beings doing this in public. I never said some public displays of affection were anything I had a problem with....this is a FAR cry from anything affectionate. The video proves that. Hell, it doesn't even look like they are having fun.

Watching it just gives me the creeps.....and I am normally up for some freaky things....taboos, ehh...not something that really bother me. This is on another level.

Sorry for paraphrasing, but I am going to bed soon and don't feel like elaborating tonight.....long day and all.

Take care....

It's not like they were boning in Central Park, they were in a Biological Museum - it's almost relevant on that basis alone. Also, there are private and some semi public sex clubs all over the world - rumors tend to indicate the rich and powerful are attracted to these places. Was Voina not protesting certain government actions? Maybe I am confused but consensual copulation is nothing compared to the crimes being committed by the governments of the world. Have a good night man.

I have to admit, you make an awfully strong point there. It's not as if they went to the Science Center for Kids or something.

If ever there is a place where screwing as protest might have any context, a Biological Museum might just be that place. I find the whole thing distasteful but then a Picasso looks like someone with too much paint, far too much time and a real healthy supply of hallucinatory assistance. Cultured is one thing I've never been accused of being too much of. So....My taste is irrelevant.

I also didn't see any kids there....and aside from the link to what amounts to outright porn being on here for that protest, I don't see where kids could have been expected by the participants to see it. I'm not offended as an adult..I just don't see the art. (See above about paint and time. lol) It takes all sorts...

Nah.. Voina are cool. They have done a lot of risque protests of their government. You would have to actually read about the point of this one. Trust me, you haven't seen anything if you think sex is depraved. Voina themselves have done much "worse."

Their is still real turmoil in Russia and so the greatest art (not saying that this is great art - though some of the actual photos with the bears are amusing, which btw this was really a photoshoot I believe) in the world is coming from Russia right now. That is where people investing in art should be looking at the moment.

Obviously you don't have a real grasp on it, and it's pussy riot (not c**t riot), so between the two you are the one coming off as vile. Maybe actually read into these things before discussing them.

Voina are bringing attention to things in a place where it's very hard to get the word out, you know? Often they are protesting the poverty of the people in Putin's Russia, they protested the FSS, by flipping police cars that had officers passed out drunk, sleeping in them. In the context of Russias history, you think a couple young people having sex in public is vile or depraved?

Sure, it is a decent point. In the case of the video I posted (which I will add I didn't really want to post to ATS and thought about it for a while before I finally did) it is true that no kids were present. What of the time they were in a supermarket performing sex acts with a frozen chicken? Onlookers were there....it was a impromptu "performance"...kids were most definitely present then. Like I said, the video was only for context and because people here are always screaming "pics or it didn't happen"....so I got that out of the way. (I did put the warning on it...it was the best I could do)

Cultured is one thing I've never been accused of being too much of. So....My taste is irrelevant.

Same here. My personal taste is absolutely irrelevant to what I was saying.

Where did I say that I think sex is depraved? I never said that....I said they were depraved, sure, but not sex itself.

Obviously you don't have a real grasp on it, and it's pussy riot (not c**t riot), so between the two you are the one coming off as vile. Maybe actually read into these things before discussing them.

Obviously you are making assumptions about me and would have no idea how much I have read into this thing. Secondly, just because the ATS censors don't pick up on the word "pussy" yet, more than likely, pick up on the word c**t (I wouldn't no, I snipped it myself) doesn't mean it isn't just as "offensive" to some. (I don't find either offensive, but like I told Wrabbit....I've never really been accused of being cultured...."vile" probably isn't a good word for it, but yeah, I curse and spit and do all that "man from the mountains" stuff....I fail to see how that has anything to do with what is being discussed though)

Voina are bringing attention to things in a place where it's very hard to get the word out, you know?

No, I don't know. I mean sure...get the word out. Speak it loud and clear, but what these girls do is simply divide. They are heathens. They destroy and raise hell and think there should be no consequence. I fail to see how that gets the word out in some way that many will take notice of. The only notoriety they will receive from most, by doing such things, is negative.
They are attention whores!

In the context of Russias history, you think a couple young people having sex in public is vile or depraved?

Again, I didn't say that. Actually, I said the opposite in another post. A couple of young people having sex in public is a far cry from a public orgy. It is depraved. Hell, I might even "get down" like that. I won't post details here but I have never had a problem with orgies or fetishes that others might have. It is irrelevant to me. I just don't see how it raises awareness in any way besides shinning a negative light.
Like I said, their "goal" whether they know it or not....is to divide. They have done this, so I guess mission accomplished.

In the end, either way, it makes no difference to me.
What I said, for me personally, stands....I won't support these girls in any way. They are depraved and I don't want a world full of these attention whores...running around burning things, destroying others...and having impromptu public orgies. I'll give them the one in the museum....it can be a controlled environment of sorts...but performing sex acts on a frozen chicken in public (on top of other things they have done that didn't involve sex acts) is just stupid. There are other ways.....

Oh you'd find it hilarious to know how close I actually came to making that part of the thread title.
Thanks for adding it to bring a little levity to the topic.

It's a bad situation but you raise a good point. For however much we can and do blame the Russian Government for their downright zealous pursuit of these folks, it's also impossible to ignore the fact that we all make choices in life. You and I made ours and it led to whatever lives we both have today. They made theirs, and while I find the situation deeply disturbing, their own choices are what led to some running, others being convicted and a large number still somewhere in Russia, staying as low profile as they can properly manage.
