So im pretty confident that everyone on ATS has heard about the birther movement that swept America. If you have not basically people were claiming Obama was not born in America and thus ineligible to hold the position of president. So a rather large group of people wanted to see his birth certificate. Obama did release it to shut them up, but people called it and still are calling it a fake. While nobody seems to know where exactly it started it seems to have been picked up mostly Republicans.

During a campaign speech given in his home state, Romney thought it would be a good idea to bring this up.

Noting that he and his wife, Ann, were born in Michigan hospitals, Romney said at a rally here: “No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place where both of us were born and raised.”

The crowd of roughly 1,000 responded knowingly with loud cheers, and several supporters said in interviews following the rally that they interpreted Romney’s comment as a dig at President Obama — although Romney said later it was “not a swipe.”

Although Obama has released his birth certificate showing he was born in Hawaii, some conservative activists still question his citizenship. Romney’s campaign aides quickly rejected that interpretation, insisting that Romney was not referring to “birther” theories and noting that he has been on the record saying he considers Obama’s citizenship a settled matter.

Source

Romney is playing innocent but I think its clear that he was joking about Obama's troubles with the birther crowd. If he was just talking about where he was born and raised, why would he insert "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate." Most politicians who talk about where they grew up just try to brown nose the heck out of the locals talking about how great the city/state/county is after stating it was where they were born and raised. Not that it means much, but Romney and Trump seem to be good buddies. I doubt Romney tells him he thinks Obama was born in America. (Personal opinion not fact)

So whats the difference between Obama and Romney? What possible reason would people have to doubt that Obama was born in Hawaii but not doubt that Romney was born in Michigan? There are credible witnesses and sources who have time and again attested to the fact Obama was born in Hawaii. But because he has family around the world and traveled a little....that means hes not American. Hmmmm...a significant portion of Romney's family is from and still lives in Mexico. How do we know he wasn't born there and had a fake birth certificate made in Michigan? How do we know Romney is not a foreign national attempting to destroy America? Romney' s joke was placed to be a silent nod to the "unintentional" racists who doubt Obama's American citizenship. To secure their vote without actually saying "im with you."

Romney has said other questionable things which I have seen posted around ATS, I gave the man the benefit of the doubt on those. But now its clear hes doing these things intentionally.

Ummm.... Okay, so he's cracking a joke about a major issue in culture and society over the past 3-4 years, centered entirely around his opponent?

Whether people agree, disagree or just want this issue to stop and go away.....well, it has still been a major footprint across American politics no one could have missed. Why can't he make a joke?

Obama himself joked about this a few days ago and at first..it grated on me that he'd be joking when so much has passed for hard feelings on it..,but then I caught myself and figured hey, a joke is a joke even if in bad taste. Nothing personal or noteworthy and taste really is in the eye of the beholder....

Just my humble thoughts.

Many, many Americans feel that the question of where Obama was born is still to be resolved satisfactorily

Interestingly, Obama won't release his academic records either.

You know, Obama just made a jab recently about Romney leaving his dog on the roof of his car. I thought it was hilarious. I'm sure many republicans found what Romney said to be hilarious, too.

I'd say at this point, as long as they aren't being blatantly racist, sexist, or inciting violence, Romney and Obama can pretty much call themselves even.

And, no, I don't think Romney was being racist any more than I think Biden was with the "shackles" comment. He was just being Romney.

I could maybe go with that if the joke was executed differently or he made it clear how crazy it is that people question this because he himself is personally certain Obama is a US citizen. But Romney said everyone knows I was born in Michigan after making the comment. How does everyone know that? And he goes on to deny that he was referring to Obama at all. It seems extremely suspect to me.

Thats a tad bit different. Its common knowledge that the birther movement has an element of racism to it, whether it is intentional or not. Romney's dog incident is not as heated or sensitive.

I can see your point as well...but I'd note this. If Mitt Romney honestly believed Obama was not a proper U.S. Citizen at this point in time, he has the power as perhaps no one else in the world does, to FORCE that issue and get an answer right now and virtually on the spot. He has standing beyond the slightest question to bring a legal action and given the urgency and Constitutional nature of such an action, I'd bet the Super Court would be looking at it so quickly, the clerks kinda wondered what flew past them.

I really wasn't sure myself on this.....but then Hawaii certified it for Arizona. People in Hawaii will be good for a prison term..long after Obama is gone...if they did that under false pretenses. Arizona also accepted, by their laws, what they received as a valid confirmation.......and they were looking for reasons NOT to accept it.

All that ended the issue of whether is exists and is real, in my mind. Romney obviously isn't in much doubt (if any) or, as noted, he could end this whole thing almost as fast as Obama could. FALSELY accusing Obama though....would end Romney's political career on the spot. So.... I figure that's where things are for it as my personal take.

Oh my goodness... REALLY!?

IT WAS A JOKE!!! IT WAS FUNNY!!! PEOPLE LAUGHED!!! END OF STORY!!!

Has anyone forgotten that Obama himself made a joke about his Birth Certificate over a year ago?! How convenient that everyone forgets that. It's fair game.

Let me refresh your memory...

BTW, I'm not voting for either of these puppets. Good day!

When someone makes fun of themselves, it's a bit different. And Obama's joke was actually funny

I thought it was funny.

The only problem I have is how Romney responded to the questions regarding it. If I had been interviewed and they asked "why did you say that?" I'd have said, "because it was funny. Next question."

I'm not voting for either of these puppets, but it was said, and the crowd laughed. They thought it was funny. END OF STORY.

Personally, I feel like its a bit of a stretch to think that any presidential candidate would not be thoroughly investigated by organizations such as the CIA or FBI. Thats my opinion though I don't know if organizations like that actually do check their backgrounds. But do you really think they would allow someone in the white house who did not check out? Anyways though, even if Romney did believe Obama was not born in America, there is no way in hell he would dare utter a word about it on the campaign trail. At least not in a way that there was no question as to what he meant. That would be political suicide for him. Even though there are a lot of birthers, the mainstream media and Obama would have a field day with him. He would be called all types of crazy. He would effectively give the election to Obama.

Well, with the whole "Birther" issue as it's come to be known, it's hard to get this point made over the partisan passion the whole subject carries now. However, there is no one who is charged with investigating and vetting a Presidential Candidate. Not one person, anywhere in the whole, vast sea of Government agencies meant to do just about everything imaginable. Not one single person has that task. NO ONE like FBI or CIA is going to run an investigation like that on their own...just because. The mere hint of political misconduct by such a thing would end the thought before it fully formed these days.

Candidates in this system are 'vetted' (to a voluntary extent, if at all) by the Parties who they are presented under as Candidates. The Party says they're good, so they're good. Thats that. Amazing and ..bordering on unbelievable but this was covered extensively by a couple different radio hosts I was listening to back in 2008 and darned if I didn't find their words to be true upon my own close look at the issue.

The Constitution says in specific terms what a President is required to meet for a few basic points but not who insures it's done. I guess no one ever got around to that part.....since the Political Parties were happy to assume the role.

Now... Win, lose or draw on Obama, I think that situation DOES have to change and requirements for basic documents like a Birth Certificate be absolute after Obama is out. This should never...ever...happen again. I am required to have a Birth Certificate to get a drivers license......but if the Republican or Democratic Party likes me well enough, I never have to show one to not only run for but go on to serve as the Nation's President.

For crying out loud .... SO WHAT?

Obama himself joked about his birth certificate situation.
And now Romney has made a joke about it.
Heck .. Obama 'jokes' about things about Romney often.
There will probably be more 'jokes' out of Romney about Obama as well.

Who freak'n cares? The back and forth jokes are unimportant.

What is important ... Obama hasn't met with his jobs council group since January. you know .. the group that's supposed to brainstorm how to get America back to work. He hasn't met with them since January and yet his schedule yesterday was EMPTY. That's right ... he has NOTHING scheduled all day. It was on the TV news. They held up his daily schedule and there was NOTHING ON IT. He's LAZY.

I have not seen Romney's birth certificate. Who here has? I am not sure why anyone just accepts that Romney and Ryan were born where they claim. I also do not understand why I get looked at like a nut for even asking.

good, it's not a done deal. barack husien obama has not shown a birth certificate. What he came up with is fake. I would rather see what he did in college. His writings and did he get loans as a foreign student? Now thats interesting.

So you clicked on this thread to say you do not care about the topic of this thread, you care about other topics?
Is that how it works around here? Do we get to change the topic if we do not like it? I would think it easier to not click the thread to begin with.

As far as the jokes go, it apparently matters to quite a few people. Someone paid cash money for all those Coris books. A lot of people actually believe these "jokes." So when the presidency of the United States and a lot of money is involved, I would guess there are people that care.

I care.

Oh, ok then.
Neat how you state something completely imaginary as if it were a fact.
