heh makes you wonder if we bought the "pink slime" then spewed it all over msn so that no matter how bad her plan failed she could just shrug and say, "better than pink slime"

it is odd if it was about choice shouldn't the old choices and new healthier choices actually be the choices? when you are forced to choose something did you really choose? as in if it s take a left turn and go down road, or take a right turn smash into wall and die, not much of a choice, sure there is one but plain to see most are stuck going left, /shrug i don't even know why school lunch is an option, really is it that tough to make a sandwich or w/e the night before, or even just stuff left overs in a small thermal cooler bag? Is it because kids cant be taught to make their own lunch the night before? Or is it because parents haven't taught their children self control and know they will eat snacks and throw away rest/lose lunch before its lunch time?

the choices with but a few "sound" the same as when i was kid, if it wasn't healthy then , how is it going to be anymore healthier on wheat bread? lol sloppy Joe? that is healthy? gtfoh haha not to mention the lower income/smart kids will learn of this and just stop off at a store before school and buy a ton of junk food and sell it $$ for more, i know because i and several people did this when my school tried to ban candy, that bam made me and my friends rich! selling candy $$$ than the store lol during school hours

the person who commented on what her kids eat for lunch, i totally agree, its always been a thorn in my side A when government tries to tell me what i like, or what is good for me B they never follow same plans or advice after telling me what is good for me and what i like : example, health care system.... they can jump up and down and tell me how great and how much it will save me(country) but the fact still remains when the dust settles they WILL STILL BE ON A DIFFERENT HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, but you know, ours will be better MY BUTT lol

why isn't there salmon, sushi, veg sushi, soups, fish n chips, garden salads (not just spinach) healthy non "cartoon" cereals, scallops, lobster, baked anything, real breakfast items for high school healthy pancakes , eggs, turkey sausage, the list could go on and on just take a look at what her kids are eating on you tax dollar, why shouldn't your kids eat this well

I'm not sure how long it's been since you were in school but I'm in my 30s and there was ALWAYS a junk food black market at school! Buy, sell, trade... Just like in the real world. I'm by no means defending Mrs. Obama and her flawed pathetic lunch program... I'm just saying.

I'm happy to see people seeing the hypocrisy in the Obamas eating junk. Many times overweight people get criticized the most for eating junk when there's a lot of contributing factors to obesity as well as for those who are thin. If someone is blessed with a high metabolism and can eat tons of junk without gaining a pound, that shouldn't make them exempt from the same ridicule. They're still filling themselves with crap and it will have it's effects on their health, it just may not be so readily apparent from an outer visual appraisal.

The bottom line is we all need to start walking the walk and proving we don't need TPTB telling us what to eat or feed our families. No matter what your size or health we could ALL stand to eat healthier and reject this junk they offer up to us.

What a dumb distraction to post the food the Obamas children eat, as if that is even relevant.. Lets see what Mitt Romney's kids are eating, and compare.. Doubt there is a huge difference in the quality. For that matter, lets see what the kids of capitol hill parents are eating, all of them are eating better then our kids in public school..

And that would have been the case regardless if M.Obama got involved or not. We are talking about cafeteria food here, something we all know has pretty much been crap for generations. Taking vending machines and the steady stream of sugar out of the schools is a common sense approach for cutting back on unnecessary calorie consumption.

Again, I would love to have someone have a valid reason to be mad at the Obamas. But when one side is willing to fling crap at the other for just about any response to rectifying a situation, it becomes impossible to try and remain partisan. I feel almost forced out of the conservative party when the arguments they make are just so asinine, and so blatantly looking for something to bitch about.

Ehh? Hamburgers with no cheese and skim milk. Yeah cut out dairy so your kids brains shrink in their heads and bones break out on the playground and their teeth fall out of their heads. They need a well balanced meal and energy to get them through the day. They are worried about extra calories when kids are walking around in school to each classroom, playing on the playgrounds and PE?? lol Kids don't gain weight from the food in school they gain the weight from food at home sitting on the couch watching T.V. after school and on the weekends eating junk.

Wow. I dont know where to begin. I didnt know what to expect here.

I came in expecting that the first lady was going to sell a crap lunch to school kids.
Turned out, its a menu that most kids in the world would more than happy with.
By the way, I dont find those lunches that healthy, full of gluten and mystery meats.

But OK, The parents and the kids reject the menu, and Im expecting that the parents are
planning to give their kids an even more wholesome lunch. But no, quite the opposite,
the shops are selling out of junk food.

So the first lady is interested in providing healthier lunches in public schools... thats government run schools.
And Im reading ATS posters saying she should stay out of it? I dont get it.

When I was a kid we had real home cooking for lunch, and there were not many overweight kids, none that I can recall.

I remember the lunch I went to eat with my daughter, been around 14 years ago now, ten dried up peas and five cold and nasty chicken nuggets, it literally made me sick.

They don't cook in the cafeteria anymore, it is all catered in and dried out and yucky by the time the kids get it, they used to cook REAL food.

Everytime I order a happy meal and my kids pull out those crappy "Moochelle" preserved apples in that plastic pouche and toss it away, I think with the size of her ass, it's for sure she aint eating anything she expects my kids to eat...

Please respond with an actual view, or point. Calling names or talking crap doesn't do anything to contribute to the conversation aside from making you look bad.

And Michelle Obama has nothing to do with Apples being in your kids meal at McDonalds.. Thats consumer demand for healthier options trickling into fast food.

(not that apples soaked in preservatives are really that much healthier of an option).

Fat America won't stand for healthier kids. After all, it's every American's right to stuff their kids full of junk food and set them up for obesity and diabetes later in life. It's the American way. What on Earth could the government be thinking, trying to tackle the obesity problem by giving kids smaller, healthier portions? Are they insane??

Seriously though, it happened in parts of Britain too. A chef called Jamie Oliver got the school menus changed from fried rubbish to healthy food, and the newspapers reported that some fat ass scum parents were actually bringing cheeseburgers and chips to the school and secretly posting them through the fence to their disgusting little kids. It's a joke. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to have children.

I haven't read through all the comments, but does anybody actually look at the root of the problem? The low-fat fad isn't working. In fact, it has increased obesity rates since it was introduced. Fat is an important part of any diet, and health officials will not change their stance on it because they will have to explain why they were "wrong" for so long. They also have a financial interest in pushing unhealthy foods, usually excessive in carbs, because they are cheap to produce and Big Agra lines the pockets of the medical industries pockets for promoting them. Watch the movie "Fat head" to see what I mean. If you think McDonalds burgers are making you fat, you are right, but ironically, it isn't the (so called fatty) meat, it's the bun (which you are told is healthy), and the fries, and the sugary drink.

Eating the bun alone would raise your blood sugar levels more than eating 2 tablespoons of pure crystal sugar. Insulin is produced, your body stores that sugar in your fat cells, and you get fat. Say hello to obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

This nations addiction to sugars is crippling us, literally.

If Americans get any fatter, the entire US is in danger of sinking like Atlantis. STOP stuffing your fat faces with sugary, processed crap, you greedy, gluttonous blobs. I spent a couple of weeks in Florida last summer and I simply could not believe the portion sizes you get in restaurants. I asked for a burger and fries in one place and the waitress brought the biggest, greasiest burger I've ever seen. There were three meat patties in it, each one dripping with melted cheese, and the fries - my dear God there was a mountain of them. If you served that up in a British restaurant all eyes would be on you as you ate it, with people thinking "Is he really going to eat all that?" But in the US it's the norm. Massive portions, low quality. And then just walking about in the US, it seems about half the population is obese, huge fat wobbly guts and sweaty lard-asses everywhere you look.

And now you're complaining about Obama giving the kids healthy food. It makes me sick.

I honestly think America needs a bit of forced portion control.. Have you seen all the fat kids and the rampant diabetes... it's completely out of control... IF your parents aren't gonna feed you correctly and are endangering your health, the least the state can do is try and set a god example... stuff them full of lard and corn syrup in the evening if you want...

The new requirements are not really much different from the old ones they slightly changed a few things, but I don't see anything to get angry about... (and the lunch/breakfast program is voluntary where I live)

The lunches served are very healthy BUT the problem is when you assume it is natural for kids to eat 3 meals a day. My kids graze all day, oatmeal with almonds and a little honey for breakfast, strawberries and a small slice of cheese for a snack, chicken with green beans or broccoli for lunch, veggies and hummus for a snack and then another meat and vegetable for dinner and a sweet treat as a reward at the end of the day. The way I feed them they get tons of nutrients, a little bit of healthy fats, lots of muscle building protein. If my kids aren't allowed to snack at school when they are hungry, how can I expect them to learn properly? I do support the menus the schools are putting out now but it is not a realistic way to feed kids so they don't get hungry at school. The number of fat kids at my son's school is appalling and I normally would say the government shouldn't get involved with school menus at all BUT does anyone realize how many medical problems are caused by obesity? How many of these fat kids are on medicade getting treated for early high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes? Get government out of health care, then you can demand they stop feeding healthy food to the kids at school!!!

Same here , only My son has entered high school & has determined it is uncool to take his lunch so he is only drinking water ( which this they will not give him but make him buy ) maybe an item on a day or two if he can find something he likes. I figure if he gets hungry he'll find him something we make sure he has money each day & offer to send him something if he would rather .

Edit to add :

The eight years before My son took his lunch which consist of raw fruit & veggies with a frozen bottle of water . He always gets a hot breakfast before leaving for school & not what others has called the # food Americans eat .

Now, about the portion sizes. Same portions for a 1st grader and high schoolers? Really?. Less food does not mean kids will lose weight; as people grow, their nutritional needs grow also. In reality, it will cause weight gain if kids are still starving; why? It's how metabolism works.

It also means they'll probably go home at the end of the day and gorge on all the types of foods they're denied!

Our school lunches have changed as well. Vegitables and fruit. Lots of it too. just something to throw in the trash to keep the janitors moaning.

Widowmaker, my kids wouldn't eat that stuff. It sounds good but they wouldn't eat it.

Or maybe the one when I was in school in the 80's-90's wasn't a flop - you know, microwaved pizza with the lowest-possible quality ingredients, french fries, amd canned fruit in corn syrup for 3x the cost of bringing lunch from home.

The gov't isn't forcing anyone to choose their offerings, and the idea of children-haters ranting and raving to bring back their unhealthy choices is ludicrous. You want to raise your child on cheetos and hot-dogs, go for it - nobody is stopping you.

Oh, that's JUST like an Obama. Secret Un-American Socialists trying to feed our kids hamburgers and corn dogs! Ha! This is America, where we eat what we want, like hamburgers and corn dogs.
