SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) - A jury on Friday handed Apple Inc. a sweeping victory in its legal war with Samsung, ruling that the Korean company had copied critical features of the hugely popular iPhone and iPad and awarding the U.S. company $1.051 billion in damages. The verdict could lead to an outright ban on sales of key Samsung products and will likely solidify Apple's dominance of the exploding mobile computing market. A number of companies that sell smartphones based on Google's Android operating system may now face further legal challenges from Apple, a company that is already among the largest and most profitable in business history. The jury deliberated for less than three days before delivering the verdict on seven Apple patent claims and five Samsung patent claims -- suggesting that the nine-person panel had little difficulty in concluding that Samsung had copied the iPhone and the iPad. Billions of dollars in future sales hang in the balance. Apple's charges that Samsung copied its designs and features are widely viewed as an attack on Google Inc and its Android software, which drives Samsung's devices and has become the most-used mobile software.

The two have been going back and forth for quite a while on this. I agree with South Korea in saying that both companies are to blame but I don't think that the companies will let up anytime soon here in the US.

However, it is getting quite ridiculous with Samsung and Apple's testimonies in court. I find the phones similar, yes, but I also find them different. If they are going to complain about basic geometric shapes and slick over period of time copying then they may as well have lost all cause to complain anyways. It just sounds dumb at this point.

Was the ruling in favor of Apple correct? Do you think the complaints are warranted and if so are they being pursued correctly? This has been going on for a while, let me know what you all think.

Truth is, no matter how many people won't admit it, Apple is the best.

I've tried hundreds of other gadgets, and Apple by far takes the cake.

Their phones are the fastest, their computers last longer than any other computer, and the iPod was revolutionary.

I used to think "Yeah who cares bunch of BS salesman promotion-type crap", but no products run like Apple products.

As far as the copying of certain concepts of their products, I would say that a lot of others coming out are very, very similar. Maybe Apple stole some ideas from someone else, but my problem with that is this : If Apple was the one out-right copying, they would have been sued first right?

The state of patent laws and the voracity of corporations and their money lust just make me cringe. The tiniest little things, good god. Well, it looks like Apple will be able to stock the bathrooms of their offices with fresh $100 dollar bills now.

I was considering the option of it being a business tactic to take down competition but there is truth for both sides being sly with each other. We can only tell what happens to Samsung after this but I am guessing they will keep doing what they have been while this squabble continues.

Here we are sitting on ATS about to "judge" this jury verdict. What do we know? Well, if we have personal experience with both phones, we may have an idea of how they really are the same and really are different. I don't know lots of people with both phones or who have had both phones, so I can't say. Other than that I would guess most of us MAY have read an article or two about the issues, but beyond that, I doubt we have an expert opinion or really know many of the particulars other than it is said the phones look very much alike. .

Contrast that to the jury, who sat through the many weeks of testimony and heard all the evidence from both sides. Now maybe they're not tech whizzes or experts either. I don't know what the make-up of the jury is.

I do know they were charged with making a decision, that they deliberated on what decision they should make, and that they came to a decision.

I, for one, will not second guess the jury on this decision. I wasn't there, and neither were you. And neither of our opinions count.

Did Xerox ever sue apple (or Microsoft) for ripping off their designs 30 years ago?

Is this going to be appealed?

This. I would say this statement is 2/3 of the story and my statement would be 1/3. Just my opinion.

I agree. They are the best but they are also over-priced (relative to hardware cost). So you pay for what you get, and in this case you bite the bullet and get the best.

It isn't the hardware though, it's the software. Unix is just a better operating system than Windows, no contest. I develop mobile applications for the iOS and Android devices but they are written in a _javascript framework and not native languages... so I can't vouch iOS being better than Android. Just from a user experience I prefer the iPhone.

I originally stated it as who you all think should have one but I decided against that instead to think off how people think of the verdict already stated. It isn't that the jury is right or wrong it is that we are consumers and without us the products wouldn't exist in the first place.

I do agree though, they sat through it all and most likely made a logical decision based on the facts presented.

Wish I patented the rectangle, then I could sue apple for all that money. Plus all the other things like tv's vcr/blu ray players, stereos, game consoles etc etc. I could be one of those rich people that could care less about other humans.

Anyone claiming Apple is the best, get back to us all in 5 years. Steve Jobs is gone, and with him will go the Apple legacy. Apple is done, it's over and they know it. Now to try and beat the competition they will just keep throwing out frivolous law suits to try and keep their heads above water. Go to any phone retailer and ask them which is better the Iphone 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S3. The Samsung gets an overwhelming nod and the Iphone, well lets just say you can only repackage the same junk so many times.

Let us talk more of the case instead of which is best. You can argue which is best only if it is connected to the topic at hand. I'd hate to see anyone breaking ToS on here for something so silly.

(kind of reminds me of Samsung and Apple fighting each other lol)

Apple might have a better interface and be more user-friendly..

But I hate the fact that literally everyone seems to have an iPhone, or Apple product these days.

Does that make iPhone (and Apple products) the best available brand in the market? No.

It's nice and everything (if you wanna buy a piece of tech for looks)...But I'm no follower and won't easily be swayed into buying an Apple product, purely because everybody has one, and is very popular.

Anyway, don't Samsung make internal hardware parts for almost every major phone company, including Apple?

I'll take the Galaxy S3 any day of the week over iPhone 4S.

My iPhone 4S is repackaged junk eh?

Some people I swear.

Not long ago that computing power was thousands of dollars and placed inside a big computer tower. Now it's repackaged junk in a small phone with an amazing screen and camera and countless amazing apps.

Why can't people just leave it at "Android is better for XYZ" and not say such absurd things like "it's junk"....

Maybe junk is not the correct word.

But I swear Apple have THE laziest team of developers.

Repackaged IS the word in this case.

This is one of my problems with the iPhone (not to mention the ridiculously over-priced, bordering extortion fees).

iPhone 3 was the best out of the lot so far in my humble opinion.

Please tell us all the amazing features that make the Iphone 4 so much more advanced that the Iphone 2 or 3. I'll save you the hassle, and tell you exactly what the phone retailers are saying. It is just a repackaged Iphone 3 with some upgraded software. You just compared your Iphone to a computer tower?

Apple may be the mobile computing king but their home computers are horrible, outdated and lack processing power. They are for the computards who need to keep things simple. My son's both have iPod's and know the itunes software is a nightmare. I wouldn't spend a cent on any of their stuff, but fortunately I don't have a need to utilize mobile devices much.

Is that a quote of something I said or are you speaking in hyperbole

Great way to start a discussion

Anyways if you're done with your rant.

3 to my iPhone?

New stainless steel design. Improved reception. Improved camera (including an additional one, HDVideo/Still). Improved screen. Better processor. More ram. Longer battery life.

Look at that I hadn't even mentioned software.

You just compared your Iphone to a computer tower?

No I did not and I won't be bothered by such a lack of reading comprehension.
