LIVE communally and simply.

Don't buy into the consumerism we see in America.

Following that advice my wife and I are thriving, we just closed on a new home.

We have paid off cars, and no credit.

It can be done, but it takes living simply and thinking outside the box.

Can you define "prosper"? Being happy? Being rich? Both? Being successful? Getting 72 virgins? Winning the lottery? Owning a successful business?

I am happy to put my input in, but I would like to know your frame of reference about prosperity before I answer.

Thanks!

The basic idea is to get yourself well trained in a field that has demand, then be good at your job. Who knows what field that is? No one else knows your skills or your desires. That's for you to decide. If you want to be a lawyer, be a lawyer. If you want to be a plumber, be a plumber. If at all possible, aim for your own business, even if you have to work for someone else for awhile to manage that. Don't take on debt you cannot afford. If you work hard and smart, you will succeed.

Pick up the old GOP line:

Bootstraps, man. Pull 'em. (Absurd, right?)

Alternatively, take the sacrifice and invest in yourself. It's simple, really, it is. You must first define "prosper" and what it means to you. After that, you'll understand everything that you must know.

You work at a job and bust your ass and your reward? You get to keep your job. Pity as I always was told when I was little you work hard you get rewarded. The only reward you get is to keep your job, at the few jobs I have worked there is no advancement, you do you your job, and hardly ever get recognized for it.

Totally agree!

Don't use credit cards. Be frugal. Save your money. Don't take on more than you can afford. Pay off your house. Live responsibly.

I'm not sure what's so hard about prospering... If I can eat, have a roof over my head and have love in my life, I'm prospering. I don't need a new car or ANY kind of itool to be happy.

I'd like to hear more of the OP's position.

You'll never prosper with that attitude, dude. Really. You're doing the "woe is me act." If you don't like your job, get a better one. Better yet, make your own job. You don't have to work for someone else. You're trapped in your own mind by your own mind. Make a plan to change. Whining about it is not going to fix anything.

You guys running around whining that the system is against you don't get it. Turn your attitude around and start working for yourself. Nobody owes you "recognition." Few people have it handed to them. My Daddy was a bartender and unemployed half the time. Like John Wayne said, "Life is hard. It's harder if you're stupid." Get with the program and put some effort into it.

I hate to tell ya OP - but it's not just America. Almost the entire world is feeling the growing pains right now. We've created a credit based nightmare in the west and it failed. We're not the only ones on the sinking ship however. Until we adjust the paradigm and our personal expectations - tighten our belts and get used to it being a little more frugal... we're not going to fix diddly.

There's a lot of money in porn.

Porn brings in roughly $14 billion annually.

All just for having sex.

I really don't get it myself.

Ah well, c'est la vie.

Not anymore, really. The boom days of porn are over. All the free porn out there is killing the industry. This plus desperate times have pushed the salaries down for everyone.

Don't ask me how I know this.

Come up with a Ponzi scheme. Disseminate it through Wall Street. When it collapses, the taxpayers bail you out.

Repeat as often as possible, squeezing every last penny out of the chumps who trusted you with their money.

They will continue to trust you. You will never be punished in any way. Laugh at their stupidity, even pointing out how you are ripping them off.

That's the plan as it has been portrayed to me, by, well, pretty much everything.

Well, you can sell your soul to a big corporation or political party and do pretty good.

Op its a catch 22 no matter what you do, the fact is some people are lucky and walk around finding hundred dollar bills on the ground everywhere they go, others make good decisions work hard and still life happens sry.

Some will say get an education, costing tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, and hope it is in an industry that doesn't decide to flop before your loans are paid off.

Others will say be smart, don't take on debt blah blah blah (can't get an education without doing just that) can't make any real money without an education, unless you know the right people, then education doesn't even matter.

I will tell you my personal experience, life sucks a lot somtimes, I have had a few good jobs, I lost a couple because I am young and didn't give a damn. Others through not fault of my own, downsized, owner died, company moved out of country, economy tanked killing the extra money many would be spending on contractors, illegal aliens taking all the construction jobs( I get 17 an hour, illegals will do it for 7) etc............

The list is long, the odds are long, the line ahead of you is long.

Giving up though guarantees failure every time, without fail it is the most consistant thing that I havve found, but it is by far the least appealing. To most of us.

Keep trying and keep fighting, times are tough right now, they will more than likely get worse before they get better.

You always miss every shot you don't take!

Op captchaos has the right idea, screw a lot of dumb people, that seems to be the common theme in becoming rich most of the time.

If you have a soul and or conscience, this might be tough to swallow, but the money makes up for it for some, not me but some.

I think a previous poster had it right...

Define prosperity.

In more than a few countries, have a herd of goats, a house with more than 2 rooms, a TV, a radio, and a means of heat or cooling, and a regular meal a few times a day means you are prosperous.

Compared to that paradigm, even our poor are rich.

I remember back in the 1960's... we were middle class. We had one TV, one car, my brother and I shared a bedroom, we ate simple meals, ate out only once a week if then, my parents had a big garden... and my brother and I did chores around the house for an allownace... later we did chores around the neighborhood for extra money. We went to the drive in only for movies, and my mom would load a small cooler with drinks, hotdogs, and she even popped our own popcorn... we didn't spend anything... and we were middleclas and we never felt poor.

Perhaps "we have gotten too big for our britches" as my mother says. It is time to move back to reality and stop living in the "Fantasy Barbie Dream House."

Most jobs these days dont even pay enough to have a roof over your head. I worked at walmart making 400 every two weeks, take home. So thats.. 800 to 1000 a month? I was eating for 25 dollars a week. 500 for an apartment. 100 or so for utilities....then gas .....car insurance.... Guess i didnt have to drive to work, i only lived a mile away or so.. looks kinda bad showing up to work all sweaty..... Oh and i lived in the hood.

I usually have money at this job now but sometimes its so bad ive walked into the owner of the companies office and told him im quitting. Last time he said "no you arent". Lmao. He somehow had a way to make me more money while i did less work? Meh....

Did i mention that i stay at work for two weeks at a time and go home two days at that point? :/ im trying to statt a business on the side but it seems as likely to be profitable as becoming a rockstar....
