Duh... he said that raped women don't get pregnant.... so it's not difficult to see that's one hell of a dangerous myth to be spreading

He acknowledged that there are occasions where pregnancy results from rape. There's nothing 'dangerous' about theories of how the human body works. That's how progress (in a scientific aspect) occurs.

His comments were deeply offensive

...for those who love to be 'offended' at every opportunity possible, no matter how trivial.

and given around 640,000 of us are raped here in the USA every year and about 5% result in pregnancy

It's not clear what the accurate percentage of pregnancies resulting from rape is, but pregnancy is far more rare in the case of rape than in consensual sex. You also have to take into account the false allegations.

There's not much worse than being sexually violated and it's not the death of a parent or murder of a loved friend, or physical assault, or a high speed car crash, not diagnosis with a serious life threatening disease, not witnessing a violent death, not losing your home or being robbed or kidnapped, not having food.. Sadly I know because I've experienced everything I've mentioned.

You only speak for one person- yourself. How traumatizing something is is not an objective matter. There are a number of components that come into play in these difficult events- the perception of the victim, how close you were to a lost loved one, how violent or intimidating the perp is, the severity of the pain inflicted upon you etc.

It would be good if you could reconsider calling us Pavlov’s dogs and mindless sheep because we are sick of being denigrated by pompous old fools that would like to legislate against us using our own judgment with regard to our bodies and our lives.

I don't resile what I've said. Leftists always react in a knee-jerk emotional response with absolutely know consideration for context and meaning. The man didn't insult anyone. You are just choosing to be a victim.

Abortion is NOT a mere issue of women's bodies or lives. That non-sensical rhetoric needs to be put to rest.

They don't think at all- they just react. Any woman who falls for their pandering is a gullible, mindless sheep.

I don't think you get it...people are outraged because he WRONGLY claims the women's body can shut down if being raped!!

There is evidence to the theory that women are less fertile when in such a traumatic experience as rape.

First of all: Present that evidence!

Secondly: It doesn't matter because even if that were true they could still get pregnant

It is unbelievable that an 11 yr. elected Rep., who is on the Science and Technology committee, is clueless about the workings of the female body! If a woman is raped-legitimally- (there is NO illigitimate rape, only CRIMINAL rape) and she is at or near ovulation, the rape will often result in a pregnancy, unless an intervention method is employed, e.g. the morning after pill. Rep. Adkin must have missed the reproductive phase of his basic biology class. Does he really believe that a woman's eggs stay stuck in her Fallopian tubes due to the stress of rape?? Before our male politicians decide that they are anti abortion, no matter the circumstances of the conception, or the consequences to the mother from carrying a pregnancy to term, they REALLY need to understand ALL the implications of rape. They claim to be pro life, but they are only pro birth. After that, they don't want to provide healthcare, or social services (food, clothing, housing) to all these babies that they claim to be saving. It would also be easier for the mothers if women were afforded equal pay for the same work that men do. Any woman who votes for the GOP candidates must have a very low sense of self worth...

Great post! Well stated and right on target.

My television was stuck on CNN for the past day and this Akin's story is on non stop. They are pounding this message home to the masses, over and over again. Every single host, every single hour, every single CNN program.

I'm watching it now, and it's Akins, Akins, Akins.

I hate to say that Akins really threw a large bone to the Dems, who were laying in wait for something to chew on after Romney's annoucnement of Ryan for VP.

Akins should step down----and let this debacle rest.....

Barack Obama has hurt women worse than Todd Akin's words ever could

- Todd Akin is a nutter and has only hurt himself by his spewing nonsense.
- Obama is in office and his policies have hurt everyone across the board equally ...
So I guess your statement is technically correct.

In every other case you are better off voting Democrat.

Seriously??
Considering what the democrats have done to the economy of this country .. considering the lies the Obama administration has been caught in .. considering lobbiest-gate ... considering Fast and Furious (worse than Watergate) .. considering 'pass the bill and read it later' Pelosi ... considering all that is included with the Obamacare TAX and all it snuck through ... considering waivergate ... considering the massive spending and entitlements (to buy votes) ... considering the bailouts and tarp and etc etc ...

Democrat/Republican = same/same. In EVERY case, this country is better off voting third party. A stronger country is good for all of us .. rich or poor ... whatever skin color .. whatever gender .. whatever religion .. Getting rid of partisan corruption - which (R) and (D) both have - is good for everyone. And only a third party sweep will give us that.

Why? Because one nutter said some really stupid things and he has an (R) after his name? that automatically makes every republican anti-woman? What about what Biden has said? He 'understands' China's one child policy .. including it's forced abortions. He gave his approval. He doesn't see a problem with this kind of forced government intrusion into a womans life. He also doesn't support marriage equality. ("gay marriage").

So, using your logic, since Biden has a (D) after his name that means that only women and homosexuals with a very low sense of self worth should vote Democrat. Right??

See? You cant' broad brush paint everyone in a party simply because of nutter statements by one person in it. The Republicans are horrified of Akins stupidity just as the Democrats are.

Maybe the traumatic experience of a car crash will prevent me from suffering any injuries

Wishful thinking is dangerous enough when it isn't being used as a political tool

Seriously - you could not make this stuff up. In this day and age that any of our politicians - ANY of them - could be so willfully ignorant...

I weep for my country

Semen’s Secret Ingredient Induces Ovulation
If you’re trying to avoid getting pregnant, here’s another reason to mistrust the rhythm method of birth control: New research confirms that the fluid in semen, long dismissed as primarily a vehicle for sperm, contains a substance that can trigger ovulation and other pregnancy-supporting hormonal responses in female mammals.

Obviously this is an attempt to take voters away from Obama. Seriously who cares what sex is losing their jobs. Why don't they tell us about everyone. This is just propaganda to make Obama look bad, I don't even like Obama but I see this as a cheap shot to get more women not to vote for him.

And so your calling all those 'conservative' Republicans, and the party itself, Liberals? Foaming at the mouth, histrionic, Pavlovian Liberals in the GOP.

Its a sign of the end times.

Clearly he DIDN'T know how biology works...because his statement is WRONG. The scary part is that this uneducated clown is sitting on a science committee.

Talking out of our ass today are we?

So first you say the percentage isn't known...just to then go on claiming it's smaller

How about you open a biology book for a change instead of spreading nonsense?

Rape is rape...unless it's consensual it's rape

Leftists always react in a knee-jerk emotional response with absolutely know consideration for context and meaning. The man didn't insult anyone. You are just choosing to be a victim.

Oh...and the right doesn't? What about them claiming Obama stole $700m from Medicare when in reality he simply cut costs without cutting services, therefore increasing efficiency and NOT stealing the money from people.

And of course he insulted people by making scientifically incorrect statements that could harm a lot of people? I mean, we are already seeing it from idiots who buy into his "women get pregnant less if they're being raped" nonsense even though it's scientifically INCORRECT.

Abortion is NOT a mere issue of women's bodies or lives.

And that's where you are WRONG.

The hilarious part is, the party claiming to be for "small government" now wants to control what happens in your bedroom and afterwards...small government my ass

Just so you know, HUMANS AREN'T DUCKS!!!

The theory he mentioned has not been disproved.

Except for the fact that he implied there was such a thing as a non-legitimate rape.

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down." He's alluding to the fact that there are false allegations of rape, some of which involve a pregnancy.

Except for the fact that he tried to use this drivel to justify banning abortion.

He was specifically asked about abortion in the case of rape. He stated that pregnancy resulting from rape is rare before talking about the bodily function.

Liberal men can say horrendous things about conservative women with no uproar from leftist women. This proves that they're not serious in any of their whining about 'sexism' or 'misogyny'.
edit on 8/21/2012 by Charmed707 because: (no reason given)

1)The thousands of women who have become pregnant after a rape prove that the theory is false.
2)And in turn, he is saying, flat out, that if you got raped and became pregnant, you must be lying.
3)And he was speaking from a stance of ignorance.
4)OK, Ill buy into your baiting. What "horrendous" things to you hear liberals saying about women that you feel the need to use it as an example?

Ya, still pathetic.

In a study in the late 1990's, the American Medical Association using a number of life indicators found that rape is the most costly of all crimes, both to society and the victims. Rape and its aftermath leave such deep psychic wounds on its victims that six months following a rape 50% of rape victims have lost their jobs and 50% have suffered the break-up of a primary relationship. [Seems my experience falls in line with a credible scientific study - but luckily didn't manage to lose any job].

Stress can decrease fertility by delaying ovulation or preventing ovulation; however it needs to be chronic stress over months or years to achieve that effect, acute rape trauma can’t put an already released egg back or prevent sperm waiting for 5-7 days. You are just as likely to become pregnant from rape as you are from consensual sex, maybe more so, especially for young girls not yet on the birth control pill.

Speaking out against attitudes that help foster misogyny and the impunity rapists feel [(tagging “legitimate” in front of rape (do we hear legitimate tagged in-front of any other crime?) & spouting unscientific medieval myths)] , is not choosing to be a victim, rather it’s a position taken to diminish the likelihood of perpetrators (98% male) sexually abusing woman & children (94% of victims).

I can see that you prefer to trivialize this Man’s insinuation that women usually don’t get pregnant from “legitimate rape,” by writing off the public response as histrionic over emotionalism. It appears you fail to see how a person making these kinds of insinuations really views women. Offensive/harmful attitudes are not rooted out by those of us that know better, remaining silent.
