I'm not sure what to make of this. Whatever I think of Blair, this sounds more like Bush's line of reasoning. Mahathir was well known as a critic of the war; Perhaps something was lost in translation...

Or maybe, he really did say it.

Anyway, interesting statement from Malaysias former Prime Minister none the less:

news.scotsman.com...

Tony Blair said that ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was too young to die, and therefore, had to be removed, Malaysias former leader Mahathir Mohamad claimed today

Mahathir, a fierce critic of the war in Iraq, said he spoke with the British premier before the US led invasion, adding that he urged Mr Blair to be patient and wait for Hussein, 67, to die.

But Blair said, Well Saddam Hussein is too young. Hes not going to die soon enough, Mahathir said in a speech in Singapore.

If Ole' Saddam (Chirac's best pal) was about to buy the farm then it might have been worth delaying action to see what resulted.

But Blair realised that France's best friend was in rude health and that it was unlikely that Iraqui insurgents would do the job. So he joined the coalition.

Contrast this to the supine, cowardly policies advocated by the liberal "anti-war" movement which suggested that insurgents should be armed so they could overthrow him.

And contrast that to the French who readily supplied him with weapons to fight insurgents.

There are clearly good guys and bad guys in all this.

some serious editting of quotes going on here. from "not going to die soon enough." to "too young to die." very different thoughts, entirely.
