On Thursday a group of South African miners were mowed down by automatic weapons, 34 are confirmed dead and at least 78 are reported wounded. The full story with video is on Reuters (warning: graphic content) link........
www.reuters.com...
"JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - Seeking to answer why a miners' protest ended in a police barrage that many are calling a "bloodbath," officials said officers had to fire to protect themselves from charging armed strikers."
The site of the massacre is being dubbed the "Hill of Horrors" by local media.
So here is my problem with this, beyond the obvious, and why it should never happen.......
1. When you run your company in such a manner that 3000 employees arm themselves with sticks and go on strike, you are running a lousy company. At this point the OWNERS and EXECUTIVES of that company have an obligation to address the concerns of the workers and do whatever needs to be done to diffuse the situation. That doesn't mean bend over and do whatever the workers want, it means listen, acknowledge and respond. By allowing that unrest to fester the owners are guilty of negligence on an epic scale.
2. Why are the police responding to a strike and working alongside the mining companies security forces? As stated above the owners let the situation get out of control, instead of sending the police the OWNERS and EXECUTIVES should have gone on site and handled the problem.
3. The union rep. on the scene said he warned the miners they would be killed if the didn't back off, in response several workers had themselves blessed by a witch doctor to give them courage. HOW BAD must their situation be for them to march into almost certain death like that? Men with sticks and machetes marched toward a line of men with guns, meanwhile the owner didn't even bother to show up.
Makes almost as much sense as bank tellers, guards and police officers dying to protect the assets of HSBC, Bank of America or any other greedy corporation that values money above all else.

I almost didn't watch it, usually I avoid that kind of stuff because my head is already so full of horror from just watching the news. This time I'm glad I saw it, something tells me that video won't be around long.

Defending my ass. They executed those people. There was at least 50 feet between the "rioters" and the firing squad. Any BS about witch doctors making them feel invulnerable is just that.

You can hear the odd pop, pop at the end as they finish off the wounded.

Whoops... caught on tape. Now the squirming by officialdom can begin.

Its a rash on YouTube:

First of all the UN has to be disbanded and shown as the inept, criminal group that it has been.

No words from Kofi Annan? He watched at the tutsis and the hutus slaughtered eachother. He's going to watch as the rest of Africa slaughters themselves. What's going on in Sudan?

As Kofe Annan hobknobs with the american communist, drinking wine, plotting destruction, plumping up his own wallet.

And disarming the only remaining "free" countries on this planet.

Unfortunatly the discussion around this will most likely revolve around the morality plays offered by the incident itself. Justified or not justified. Right or wrong. What would you do? (that depends dosent it), breaking down the conversation into the two sides of the never ending Aristotlelien seesaw. Yes or no. Your hoped for understanding of the issues BEHIND the event I'm afraid will not reach into the general publics consciousness.

Just as a sidente to this terrible event, skynews via the Foxtel satellite service initially reported the massacre as quote" warring unions" (from memory) this was displayed as the story header on the interactive section of skynews, it mentioned no police massacre of civilians but inferred the workers killed each other.
