Mee t the 'Face-Kini', the latest craze to hit China's beaches as bathers wear masks to beat the sun's harmful rays

One way to avoid the dangerous rays of the sun is to stay indoors, another is to apply a healthy layer of sun cream and slap on a wide-brimmed hat.

If you’re in China, however, there is a third option - a 'Face-Kini' complete with a body suit.

The name describes a protective head mask that is being used in Shandong province's East China Sea coast by beach-goers who want to protect their skin from the sun.

The clothing was invented around seven years ago and is now under mass production and on sale at swimwear stores along the coast.

Here's what I find utterly fascinating about this story... If this isn't a marketing stunt of some kind and the photos represent real consumers of this product, what actually convinced them they needed these things?

Ask yourself if you think this product would sell in other places around the world, like Europe and the US?

What's happening over there that's not happening over here?

I'd love to understand what actually motivated these consumers to buy these items. I think the answer would be very interesting on many levels...

I saw those pics and all I could think of is the 'Free Pussy Riot' demonstrations. I guess that means I'm addicted to the news.

On the body suits and head coverings, I'm guessing they'd be be a fairly hot way to spend a day at the beach, so I'm not buying that any more than I would a Speedo.

That`s to keep the radioactive moss off their cheeks.

Looks like Pussy Riot on tour.

I completely agree.

That's what I don't get. What kind of marketing message or personal beliefs 'sold' this concept to consumers?

Are they wearing these masks away from the beach too?

It's hard to believe this is for real.

It says they keep the jellyfish away.....
I can't think of any other reason to wear that, if it's warm enough for the beach, it's too hot to be covered like that.
I don't even like putting on sunscreen
Or that much clothing...

It makes me think of how men say condoms feel - a little bit too stifling.

Chinese see dark skin as ugly. That's about it. Face and body whitening creams are all the rage there. They value their fairer complexions over other East Asians.

It's a cultural thing me thinks.

This is nothing new... the Chinese have always worn the Ninja mask.

The 3rd picture shows an elder Master teaching 2 Ninja recruits how to maneuver through water

Only if you are saying ignorant comments about Chinese people double as humorous jokes.

Are we going all ninja cats here? I Loved that Cats& Dogs movie.

Anyways, back on topic... I'm betting on an increased incidence of skin cancers that's behind this trend.

It's the Chinese man.. they do weird stuff over health concerns. In college there was a girl from China in one of my classes that alllways wore a face mask. Never saw her without it. Her friends all wore them too. You'd see them walk by with a facemask on, usually with drawings on them. They said that was what you do.. self expression and safety in China that they learned in their school lol. Face-kini seems a little over the top ... but not surprising.

Real creepy stuff.
My guess is a local bondage shop owner was suffering from poor sales, and came up with a way to sell all that old stock of latex gimp masks.

He told the locals the sun makes their skin old,and he has the answer...
The power of snake oil marketing!

Somene will start selling them in the US soon-"You wan beat trapwire? wear a gimp mask!Only 20 bucks.etc"
