That tripe being perpetuated by OBama and his supporters seem to leave out the fact that the majority of roads, and bridges in this country were built long before there ever was a US of A government and before States ever became states.

Meh.

Do you seriously believe this?

Just checking.

Really? Before there was a US government and statehood? There were roads and bridges? Who built them? The Cherokee?

Wow. I had no idea that the indigenous tribes has built so many bridges and roads... or were they really paths and rivers to follow?

Indiana became a state in 1816 first settled in the late 1600's and 1700s so for 200 years who paid, who built those roads and bridges?

Wasn't the Federal Government now was it?

You realize though, that it is a correct statement. Many people do have help when they build their business.

But the way obama put it he was trying to discredit the people who came up with the idea for the business and put it in motion.

The entire Obama statement can be located here.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Maybe we just comprehend information differently - but I don't see anywhere, in that speech, where individual achievement is minimized or negated.

Though I haven't had time to dig deeply in - this seems like a fairly good source for information on early roads in colonial America.

There was someone who gave someone a job as a small business owner

Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.

Wasn't government who only destroys people so that the in crowd can be "sucessful".

Somebody invested in roads and bridges.

Somebody who works pays property taxes paid for those bridges and roads.

If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.

If you got a business that person did all the work paid all the real estate loans, paid electric, paid property taxes who took the risk in hiring someone to do a job and met pay roll, paid their unemployment benefits,.paid that 6% of the SS benefits, and who followed government laws, regulations, and sanctions, and still managed to turn a profit to keep their doors open regardless of inflation, and lack of talent of their employees.

The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

True Military spending made the internet possible but it was a small business owner who seize the opportunity to use it to its full potential instead of surfing porn and posting on conspiracy websites etc.

Funny Robert yes his name is Robert not Bob. But he is a full-service distributor for Lubrizol Performance Systems. Lubrizol in the 1940s.

•Lubrizol supports the War effort. Government authorities credit Lubrizol with producing more than half of all the engine oil additives and about 80% of all the gear lubricant additives required in Allied military operations.

Lubrizol is now owned by Berkshire Hathaway. That would Warren Buffett. Some how I don't think they could have avoided government money in the chain of companies hes tied to.

You said; "majority of roads, and bridges in this country".

Now you're down to Indiana. That's a step down, but in the right direction. Now, about the context of what Obama said, I suppose the taxes paid by consumers, as well as the sweat of construction workers, helped build that infrastructure those businesses depend upon too, right?

Full quotation is:

the majority of roads, and bridges in this country were built long before there ever was a US of A government and before States ever became states.

Which many were who paid property tax not by consuming but producing income that paid for those to be built. There are many roads in this country that has no business.

A road is not evidence of a :"successful business".

Really something out of nothing is the failure to understand what the hell property taxes are.as a justification of Government creates all which it never has, and never will.

As a Canadian, I'm very familiar with roads through wilderness. What I've noticed about them is that they always start somewhere with businesses and end at another place with businesses. In that way, companies can do business between those two points as well as connect to other points (towns, cities, ports and airfields)

You have been around ats for a while, I know you have seen those people who are just blinded to the reality of the situation plenty of times. Take a few steps back and try to honestly comprehend that maybe you wrong this time. Blinded by hate for Obama you insist that a business owners property taxes paid for all the roads and bridges ever.
Well I'm done trying to talk sense. You wont listen

That is a fact property taxes collected on the local level by local government pays for that anyone who doesn't see that doesn't have any sense.

A business hires employees who pay property taxes which is a tax levied on real estate that the country owns do people pay the goverment property taxes?

Income yes but do they pay taxes on real estate?

No,

Here's my analogy:

The gubment puts a pile of wood and a box of nails on everyone's front yard once a month (our roads and bridges that we all have equal rights/access to).
Some people get to work and use that wood and those nails and make something awesome. Some people hang out on the corner and do nothing with the wood/nails.
Why does the person who builds a mansion with the wood owe anyone anything? He already gives back more by paying more taxes, that's not enough? Maybe he hired someone to help him build. Then he created and gave someone a job, that's still not enough? Remember, the employee has the same pile of wood and nails on his front yard but either doesn't want to take the risk or doesn't have the motivation to spearhead a project so he just helps someone else build theirs, for a fare wage.
Everyone has the same opportunity. Some go for it, others don't.

Except that we weren't born into a blank and clean world where somebody handed us all the same exact tools and supplies. We were born into a world where the infrastructure was already extant and in place. We were born into a society.

This is the key to the argument and difference of opinion. I was not born into a vacuum. I did not self-create. I am the sum of my experiences and opportunities... all which have occurred in a predetermined structure and social setting.

Well, the Right of Ways for -some- of the roads now in existance may have been in place, but the technology has certainly changed greatly from dirt wagon trails and rickety wooden bridges to full structural section asphalt and steel bridges. The point, however, is that every American who purchases gas or products, ESPECIALLY business owners who move a greater share of goods than the average American, has already paid for that infrastructure through taxes.

Our system is broken. We've got a politician talking about the same people "giving back" that have been largely responsible for developing the country in the first place. Small business owners, home owners, and the like aren't the fiscal leeches in this country. The middle class, through property, business, fuel, income, and sales taxation has paid for the roads, utilities, education, defense, and well being of the entire country. If anything, those who pay the least in taxes yet claim the greatest share of returns from all of these should be the ones looking to "give back." Yet, generally speaking, they are all absorbed with whining that they arent getting enough and more should be taken in their name from those already indentured into caring for them.

That is not the only thing broken according to some in this thread I should be thanking Obama and Government for infrastructure which is the same thing as China's last leader pushed, and their ghost cities that are empty..
