Pentagon: Iran building, training militia in Syria

news.yahoo.com...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Iran is playing a growing role supporting the Syrian regime and is helping to build and train a militia to fight opposition forces, U.S. defense officials said Tuesday.

Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Pentagon reporters that the militia, which is generally made up of Syrian Shiite forces, is being used to take the pressure off the Syrian regime forces, which have been at war for almost 18 months.

Panetta said it has become obvious that Iran is doing more for the Syrian regime, including providing assistance and training.

"We do not think that Iran ought to be playing that role at this moment in time," the defense secretary said. He said that "it's dangerous, that it's adding to the killing that's going on in Syria and that it tries to bolster a regime that we think ultimately is going to come down."

Asked about military options for intervention in Syria, Dempsey said the U.S. has been in discussions with Jordan and Turkey about the possible need for a safe zone, because the two countries neighboring Syria are seeing an influx of refugees fleeing the fighting.

"And with a safe haven would probably come some form of no-fly zone, but we're not planning anything unilaterally," Dempsey said.

Killing Two Birds With One Stone?

slowly they are justifying both attacks on Syria, Likewise Iran, they have to keep dragging it out a bit more though, so they 'exhaust their diplomatic endeavors'

Seems fairly simple. We help fund the guys that want to topple an Iranian backed regime( helping Israel in the short term and Saudi Arabia in the long term) and Iran puts its resources toward stopping it. Since the Arab Spring began I think the lines are being drawn for an eventual showdown between Shia and Sunnis. It's been happening for a long time but I think the "big one" could happen within the next decade.I think it's possible that this eventual conflict could be the start of a true World War. We, apparently, supporting Saudi Arabia and the Sunnis(which could explain our support of Sunni extremists when it suits us) and Russia and China supporting the Shiites. Just a thought

I smell USA incited rebels thinking it would spread to Iran, but it doesnt.

The Arab spring probably staged at sometime, pretty good results but seems doesn't work spreading to Iran ...yet ?

When we can have war ? Come on, we need to find the WMD or make use of the word again!.
Surely USA love to see some blood and oil spilled, if there wasnt enough already.

We know your tricks we know your motives, we just dont want anything to do with it. Go die alone.
For Americans that have good heart - save yourself.

Seems to be the case, killing MANY birds with one stone. Libyan veteran fighters(the same ones that fought against Gaddafi), are now joining in the fight in Syria against Assad check it out.
It seems to me that "they" are trying to say: "See, Assad is just another Gaddafi! Lets blow that s..t off!"
Its a try to "internationalize" the conflict and send all they have to Syria and by collateral effect get Iran. All this without "provoking" anything, just following the tide.
