Julian Assange will be granted asylum, says official

Ecuador's president Rafael Correa has agreed to give Julian Assange asylum, officials within Ecuador's government have said.

The WikiLeaks founder has been holed up at Ecuador's London embassy since 19 June, when he officially requested political asylum.

"Ecuador will grant asylum to Julian Assange," said an official in the Ecuadorean capital Quito, who is familiar with the government discussions.

On Monday, Correa told state-run ECTV that he would decide this week whether to grant asylum to Assange. Correa said a large amount of material about international law had to be examine

That is awesome. I hope that Julian Assange can continue his quest for truth from Ecuador, where he is guaranteed safety.

Assange picked and chose what he released. It may have looked like "truth" but it was calculated. How much got held back for hush money?

What kind of tactics are that?

How is it any better than the people he claims he is exposing....

Hi anon72,
Blimey,took them long enough-I bet those bribe offers just kept on getting higher and higher from those who want assange.
I hope he's ok-he has been stuck in a room for weeks,hope he's been getting vitamin d supplements.
He may be looking a bit pasty,or more pasty than usual by now.

I think he may still be arrested in the UK,if they catch him between the embassy and the car.
Not sure though.
