Hi.

This thread is about keeping your computer clean.

I use a desktop computer I don’t think my specs matter neither do yours as long as you’re using Microsoft/IBM. If you are I’m almost positive the programs I use will work on your machine. Of course anything you download and use is at your own risk.

So that’s where we are.

I was wondering what the best FREE programs are to clean up or protect my system.

Then I thought of course who better to ask than ATS.

I think if we share our knowledge about things rather than arguing with each other all the time we may actually accomplish something.

This is what I have to share……

www.superantispyware.com...
I use the free edition.
www.nkprods.com...

About once a week I do a “disk cleanup” using windows then I use both of the above programs.

My machine performs much better after her treatment.
Do you know of any FREE programs that clean, protect, or improve your computer?

Another important security point for Microsoft Windows users, make sure to stay current on the security updates.

Good call Drunkenparrot

Also if possible schedule regular backups with system image to a secondary drive, external drive or network share. Once its setup you dont have to think about it again until something goes wrong with your system.

CCleaner is the best; but it doesn't defrag. I would run CCleaner and then create a batch file to run the windows Disk Cleanup and derangementer.

The command syntax is different from OS to OS (like XP to 7). Before you create the batch file, you will need to run cleanmgr /sageset:1
choose the options you want to clean up on the automatic side, create the batch file, create a shortcut on the desktop, or create a scheduled task, and run it every week at the most, or once a month at the least.

I put a bunch of comments in case I quit and someone has to take over my job. I will feel so sorry for them, I automated almost everything (still need to run the right file, but once that is done, automated).

Easy peasy.

Good advice I forgot to mention to update.

New question.

I have Nvidia for graphics and I check for direct updates from their website. They have a program that checks to see if your system is up to date which mine is so they say.

Well apparently they have some deal with Microsoft and MS says I need to install an update. Every time I try to install the update it errors out on me.

I think my system has been updated by Nvidia and MS is reading it wrong. It must be an old update that I passed on at the time.

you could try uninstalling the GFX drivers altogether using DriverCleaner and then re-installing the latest up to date drivers.

I use Steam for my games which keeps my video drivers up to date for me.

I know this thread seems to be primarily for Windows users, but I thought I would add my recommendations for *nix based machines

OS X:
OnyX
AppCleaner
CCleaner
CleanMyDrive (useful when using removable drives between operating systems)
Sophos or Avast Anti-Virus (also useful when using multiple OSs)
DaisyDisk (the trial version works just as well; the free alternatives were buggy in my opinion)

Linux:
BleachBit
Avast (overkill but meh)
