I've been looking for more info but couldn't find anything special, except May 1947 was one of the driest in more than a hundred years.

So, what is special about this place, on this day, that sparked (pun intended) these events, which don't usually happen? Perhaps some of these factors were involved?:

- Unusually dry atmosphere over a period of time
- A period of unusually hot days
- Thunderstorm lightning activity
- Perhaps insufficiently shielded electrical installations of a small town in 1947
- Likely soot in the air from fish smoking. Pic captions says it's the largest smokery on the island in 1919, a few years earlier but I just dig the pic:

In 2004, 1947 was the warmest summer in 85 years:

It was the 4th dryest month of may since 1874:
