to history and philosophy buffs alike, i ask who said this.

I do not know, but it seems a paraphrase of an unattributed quote of

"The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past, you can't go on well in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches."

It contains much the same message, but again, it seems to be a paraphrase because I can find no direct reference to that quote.

Are you asking to try and find the source, or do you already know the source?

i was marinating tonight. I thought this and said it to a friend of mine, since i am a fan of history and philosophy i assumed it was something lurking in my subconscious that i learned from another source. i couldn't attribute it anything i knew history wise, and as i started thinking about it i realized it pertained to a lot of the discussions i see here on this site.

I suspect the asnwer is "nobody ever said that".
For starters, you used the word "than" where I suspect a better word would be "then".

Nope, I Googled it and all it came up with was your thread. It must be original, but on first glance I thought of Alexander the Great, but no.

Unattributed that's the problem with quotes now days, just about useless when it comes to sources and proper references.

All kinds of made up quotes out there.

Good old Teddy and Winston, two blow hards that knew how to get # done, personal hero's as I can appreciate that ability to both piss people off and inspire, also two very quotable individuals.

I dont much follow Call of Duty, but i played the first and second modern warfare and sound like one of many quotes used in the game during the load screens.

Some of the members are also saying Theodore Roosevelt, Teddy's quotes were also used in those games too if i remember correctly.

as i posted before i did say it tonight, but i dont think it was original to me, i want to know who important said it so next time i say it i got some historical back up, cause were im from and the people i talk to no one really listens till after the fact

the only games i play are old school knight of the old republic(rarely) skyrim(here and there,level 59) and FIFA 2011 when me and my roomate got time to play drinking games, last first person shooter i played was halo for original xbox

Typically, google search is pretty good about finding famous quotes but yours did not come up with anything. Could it have came from a book you read or a movie you saw?

Sounds like a French Revolution kind of quote. I think the French have always talked like that now that I think about it. Maybe Voltaire said that. The ancient Greeks said alot of stuff like that too.

Anybody heard "You must become like your enemy in order to defeat him" ?

In the movie "The Wind and the Lion" T. Roosevelt says "The path of a great man is dark, lit only by other great men, and sometimes they are your enemies" Did TR say that?

Winston Churchil does look like Theodore Roosevelt, never heard that before.
