Latest update...

www.usatoday.com...

Iranian state television has raised the toll from Saturdays' twin earthquakes to over 250 dead and at least 2,000 injured.

The quakes hit the towns of Ahar, Haris and Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province, the TV report said. At least six villages were totally leveled, and 60 others sustained damage ranging from 50 to 80 percent, it said.

They still haven't reached many of the remote villages, so these numbers are likely to continue to climb.

USGS is currently reporting 13 aftershocks 4.0 and above...

Iran continues to get aftershocks. I was surprised, but nonetheless, there's no doubt in my mind that it was too coincidental when we are all focusing on Olympics and potential tsunami off the west coast.

China got a 6.2 EQ plus few aftershocks so far....

I have kept a close eye on this thread and was disappointed with the lack of updates after 12am EST! I decided once I got home I would dig a little, seeing as the thread had died down and the MSM isn't saying a word (everyone's focused on Romney's VP pick)!

Here is an article I found that is particularly disturbing to me: mobile.reuters.com...

Sorry, I don't know how to embed links from my phone

It states in here that Iranian officials have ended rescue efforts as of Sunday afternoon, claiming all lost had been found! However there are interviews with citizens that claim that is quite to the contrary!!

Deeply saddening, makes me absolutely heart~sick to think these victims have even been abandonded by their own government!
edit on 12-8-2012 by IrishCream because: NICE!! It embeded it for me when I hit post!

I have to disagree that the gov't is not helping.. my friend from school went to Armenia to visit and informed me that there are rescue teams still working but they keep getting aftershocks that hinder their continued efforts.

I wouldn't be surprised that the media downplays this... But I'm also guessing it didn't go well as planned for Israel and USA.

Btw, how many other countries have nuclear reactor?? I'm sick of hearing ppl talk about getting rid of Iran for that purpose.

It is said in the article I quoted and being reported by mulitple other sources at this time that the Iranian Officials have called off their search and rescue efforts as of Sunday afternoon! However they are receiving aid from volunteers, fellow citizens and the Red Crescent (sp) at this time! So I was reacting to the fact that the government had called off their official search and rescue efforts!

As far as your comment about being sick of people going after Iran because of their nuclear endevors.... I couldn't agree more!! I have said that from the very begining! Many, MANY other countries with far greater resources and bigger "axes to grind" have developed nuclear capabilities (I.e. the good 'ole U.S. of A.)!

There are far more innocent, peace desiring people on this planet than there are government's who make money from all these wars! I'd bet my last dollar that the vast majority of private citizens would prefer a. World filled with peace than one divided by wars, especially wars that have no real purpose other than a pissing contest to soothe the barbaric egos of the world "leaders"!

To all Iranian people on behalf of decent Australian people I offer my apologies for the sheer lack of coverage a world
disaster has received in our country.
I am staggered, in the Melbourne Herald sun, Mondays paper an earthquake that kills 250 gets a mention on page 26.
Are they kidding? Olympic Games on the first X amount of pages and then this disaster on page 26.
The MSM needs shooting they are a F*cking disgrace. This is why I hardly ever read the Newspapers or watch Mainstream news.
Rant over.
Again I offer my condolences to those who have lost love ones and to those injured a speedy recovery.
You are in my prayers.

Iran says foreign help for quake area now welcome

TEHRAN, Iran — In an apparent change of heart, Iran said Tuesday it now welcomes foreign aid for victims of the deadly twin earthquakes that hit the country's northwest last weekend.
The remarks indicate authorities were still struggling to cope with the quakes' aftermath amid growing criticism that they failed to react timely and help the region along the borders with Azerbaijan and Armenia, where the 6.4 and 6.3 magnitude quakes Saturday killed 306 and injured more than 3,000 people. Iran's government said it has provided shelter for about 50,000 people who lost their homes during the quakes, which have been followed by scores of aftershocks.
The quakes hit the towns of Ahar, Haris and Varzaqan in the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan. At least 12 villages were totally leveled, and 425 others sustained damage ranging from 50 to 80 percent, state TV and news agencies reported. The stricken region has a population of about 300,000.

So basically the Iranian government called off their search and rescue efforts on Saturday, with SEVERAL villages still in complete ruin, and have set up temporary housing for 50,000 people. Based purely on the numbers they have provided that means we're looking at at least another 50,000 people (probably more) who are homeless, and countless numbers of people who have not yet been found beneath the rubble.
Days after they stop rescue efforts they are finally calling for outside help.

The most heart-breaking part of this whole thing, to me, is that most of the injured/killed are women and children, because the quakes hit during the day and most of the men were out working.
Could this be why there has not been more internal aide? This IS an area where women's rights are nearly non-existent.
