I see that you're in S. Illinois... Have you ever considered moving up North around the Chicagoland area (thats where I am)... There are opportunities up here for sure, I work with recruiters (IT industry) and they cant get people fast enough... I wonder if its more of a geographical thing for you, because you sound like you would be a solid worker for any company...

When did it become free to move? And if she doesn't work in the IT industry then what?

I'm sorry guys but this is normal for a Great Recession. Do you think that half of these people really want to be collecting benefits. There is a shortage of jobs for people to work at in this country right now, most of the jobs that were paying a livable wage and insurance benefits were exported. This information is deceiving because a lot of these people are children receiving healthcare benefits because people don't have insurance and are still in the guidelines for their kids to be insured. Some people receive just a little foodstamps but it's enough so they can survive. People with good jobs have no clue what the other sixty+ percent in this country live like. This renamed Depression is as bad as the Great Depression was but the government is better at hiding things this time. The crash is just being pushed off into the future a little because the problems aren't being addressed properly. I predict that most people will lose most of their money they have invested before this thing comes to an end, Wallstreet hasn't fixed their policies and promotes risky ventures as sound investments.

This is the best post I've read on this thread. You can't starve your way through a recession or depression, or the whole economy sinks.

That being said their are solutions and it has to do with real changes in who the government serves. A whole lot of things could be done to permanently create abundance without fascism.

Well gee wonder why????

How about most of our jobs being given away to India and China????

I was 57 worked for a company for 16 years, 16 "exceeds expectations" reviews, accuracy rating of 98% took "Team India" over a year to learn my basic job functions (financial / claims spread sheets, reports and state forms).

If it weren't for my 68 year old husband (with a aorta valve replacement 4-5 years ago) still having a good job I would be homeless.

Now, he will have to work until he drops dead.

While our house value went down our property taxes went up.

No we don't eat out, haven't had a vacation in over a decade, don't buy $200 purses or shoes, and share one car (a mid size hybrid).

Our government bails out the banks, the big corporations get huge tax breaks, hide their money over seas, have given away all our jobs to foreigners and I wonder why so many people are on federal welfare.

(We're not)

I volunteer at a homeless shelter twice a month and guess what? We use to see only drug addicts, alcoholics, vets and the mentally challenged..................now we are seeing people who one year ago had a job, a house, a car, and considered "middle class".

America is being dismantled by the 1%.

Our government is corrupt to the core.................check out the medical and retirement package your state reps are privy to.

Don't care, well wait, your turns coming.

Its not free to move, but if you can scrape enough together it may make more sense to leave an area where there's zero work... And the IT industry was just one example, I know many people who are finding work here in the chicagoland area.... If you're educated/qualified, hard working, and available, you can find work here in Chicago. Granted, it may be a starting salary around $30-35k but thats definitely more than what you would make on welfare...

I was just trying to throw out a suggestion to her... She said she was from the chicago suburbs, so maybe she has family up here or friends who can take her in while she tries to get back on her feet...

Is this what YOU Really want for this country ??

No ... I'd much prefer defenseless starving children wondering our streets and innocent people climbing through my windows in an attempt to feed themselves and their families...

Or how does the spreading of disease through major metropolitan areas sound?

The problem here isn't the percentage of Americans on assistance ...

It's the lack of jobs, and an endless war on drugs ...

And i wouldn't put my faith in someone else's numbers if i were you ... Who paid how much for those numbers to fit whatever agenda?

Forging statistics is a powerful propaganda tool, and there IS a presidential race going on ... I wouldn't trust these numbers (or ANY numbers) unless i did a head count myself ...

Carry on, go back to trying to teach aphids to speak English.

Then you will be kind enough to please explain the advantages of an infinite expansion plan, which of course the Earth can support? Or would you prefer to point out the disadvantages in voluntarily limiting our reproduction?

if only those who believed they were so financially sound, that they would always be able to support the children they had, well, who would the rich be counting on to do all the work in a generation or two??

there are more than four programs, there's aid to families with dependent children (afdc) which, if you have enough kids, or a small enough income they will give you some cash assistance.
there's the well known food stamps.
there's medicaid.
housing assistance.
heap (energy assistance)
not sure if the cellphones is a gov't program or not.....
educational assistance.
school lunch program.
child health (schips, or chips, whatever it's called)
child care assistance....
and, I am sure there is more that I am not thinking of....
the thing is though, a family might only get $10 or $20 in food stamps and they are being counted...
they might be just getting a tiny bit of help with their rent and they are being counted...ect......

www.health.ny.gov...

and well, I am pretty sure that there are people in NY making much more than me that have some sort of subsidy coming to them for health insurance for their kids!!!

the thing is though,

okay, it's pretty well accepted that wal mart has alot of employees that are also depending on these programs....

but, well, I was listening to something yesterday where someone was saying that over 40% (they gave the exact figure, I don't remember....) of their revenue in some of their stores were in the form of food stamps!!!

an outrageous percentage of the revenues going into the healthcare companies in my area are connected to the gov't programs....

so, it seems to me, as much as the people are dependent on the gov't programs, the businesses are just about as dependent, if not more so....
so, keeping that in mind, should we really just cut the funding for them??? can the business world survive in a world were their employees are screaming at them for a raise because they are starving and they are losing 40% of their customers because they have lost the funding they were using when they went to their stores???

yes, this is rather alarming news!!! but, as someone else has already pointed out, it isn't new news...it's been known for awhile! it's just convenient for one political party to speak up and talk about it now, use it as ammunition against the other party!! believe me, give them the power again and well...
they will be back to playing the same game, telling us how outsourcing the jobs is oh so good for our economy, and telling us how we shouldn't have had our kids (although, they'd scream and yell bloody murder if you told them you aborted one because you just couldn't afford it!)..and how it's all our fault, blah, blah, blah!!!

our country is trending on ice....it's time to park the political rhetoric at the door, take an honest assessment of our predicament, and find a way out.... if you are sincere about your love for this country. it is time to work with the truth and not a bunch of convenient lies and half truths.

well its not called a "depression " for nothing....you reap what you sow, i think everyone has been swindled, and both corporations and individuals are at fault.

If you can SOMEHOW ANYHOW get off Govt paychecks, your depression will end.

You will work harder, and maybe wont be rich, but you will be wealthy as everything you have done, you EARNED 100%

another thing to note here is, when the people are allowed to prosper, there is a surplus of wealth. So the more prosperous the people, the more the needy can get support from those who can afford to share.

just sayin--

Well, for one thing.......we can mandate that the top earners pay the same percentage as I do. That's a start.

They certainly aren't creating any dam jobs. If I pay 32%, then they should too. Basic fairness.

Look, the phrase "safe sex" means protecting oneself from sexually transmitted diseases. If your depopulation agenda is so just why lie and call "safe sex" a contraceptive method?

Everyone knows the only safe sex is no sex, guess you didn't watch the after school specials. I'd say that's an effective way to prevent pregnancy.

this has not happened by accident. the "rowing" of the economy is a mathematical consolidation of wealth.

the long term picture is municipalities going insolvent and selling off capital at pennies on the dollar to international investors.

this is the Plan and the first things to be privatized will be natural resources.

the solution is to own private property en total.

It looks like Obama and the Democrats do....

Tell your political operatives to allow us the infrastructure and electrical grid restoration contracts that will put all those millions of welfare cheats back to work fr the private sector, or shut the hell up. It's the GOP federal, state and local mantra of European-style economic contraction that has tossed so many previously employed workers onto the "government dole", and anyone who isn't a GOP political hack knows that this is true.

So, what's your strategy? Kicking everyone out into the street and hiring Blackwater private contractors to keep them for hunting you down and killing you and your entire family off when they've finally had enough of the weird banana republic that you want the USA to become?

Or do you even have a strategy at all? Well, other than to make stupid noises about how Obama's policies have compelled the GOP to embrace European-inspired austerity to the economic detriment of every state in the union, and forced enormous piles of investor capital (over 2.5 trillion so far) to languish in overseas bank accounts, when so much new industry opportunity is being grabbed by the Germans and the Chinese, and made it impossible for rightwing Tea Party cons to allow for there to be "change in the way government works" at any level or for any semblance of functional government to exist at all.

You people are attacking this nation from the inside, and you might just succeed in taking our entire country down. I don't know why they don't call this sort of prolonged subversion treason, but I guess that when your bosses own the mainstream media, they get to establish the labels for everyone as they always have.

We know who and what you people are, though. We're not fooled by your media elites.

Living is a human right. We should not have to toil away our days just to scrape together a meager living. Human beings have the right to free food and the right to free housing and the right to live long, full, happy lives. Our system is perpetuated by greed. This is not right.

The lion, tiger, or bear who hunts their prey is not exercising their right to "free food" they are earning it. Try hanging your velvet painting of Elvis on the wall of a cave where a mother bear and her cubs are living and explain to them your right to "free housing", and see how far that gets you.

The tragic irony of claims like this is that it takes labor to build a house and the very same "free housing" advocates are the ones demanding labor be paid well and certainly not demanding this labor work for free so they can have their housing free.

The even greater tragic irony is that those demanding their "free food" and "free housing" then turn around and blame their lack of it on the greed of others, as if their demands are not greedy at all.

just wondering here....
do the bear, the lion, the tiger have a hunting permit??? how about of fishing permit???

ya see, we humans are the only ones stupid enough to accept that we should have to pay a fee to go out and get our prey!!!

The greatest progressive lie there is as if salary taxation is the same thing as capital gain taxation where that money depends on whatever way the markets dictate and can be whiped out in a matter of minutes as we saw in the the so called "financial crisis".

There is no risk go to work everyday set pay for a an amount of work conversly any little thing can make the market lose trillions.

But hey all in the name of "fairness" continually nickle and diming less than 5 million people in this country to who do pay the majority of taxation in this country because the simple fact the more you make the more you pay.
