Ola from Andalusia, lots of locals talking about this for the last few days. We're in the poorest part of spain with unofficially 50% unemployment.
There is plenty of alternative and organic farms here and no shortage of food for people living in the Campo (countryside), you just need to ask or at least do a bit of work. The cities are a different story.
Contrary to what some one else posted here, you do not just get free benefits for being born here. You get NO benefits at all until you work and pay "autonomo" fo 6 monthes 250 euros each month. Autonomo is like income tax. Most people cannot afford to save after paying this amount. You get benefits for 1.5 years then its back to nothing. Most of the people in the videos have not worked for more than a year and a half so, no benefits no money.
I have children, and i have dutifully paid taxes here, which Zapatero and now Rajoy give straight to the banks.
I will happily take food from the supermarket to feed my kids.
Interestingly our Pueblo is now Bankrupt 17 Million missing for what was going to be a new hospital just GONE.
The Ayuntamiento (local gov) even though broke, have more than doubled the local police force and the Guardia Civil (military Police Junta) have quadrupled their numbers.
There are police roadblocks around the town on a daily basis, some of the police are cool though. My mother in laws car insurance ran out, she's a pensioner she told the cop she needed to get to town but had no money for insurance, and he told her to take a back road home where there was no police control.
Other police are desperately scamming money. Fining people for made up charges driving them to the bank machines and then pocketing the money.
Two High ranking officers were caught stealing marijuana. They raided a farm confiscated the weed but never charged anyone. They were followed to an abandoned farm where they had stashed tonnes of weed.
we're off to the supermarket now tee hee.
Hasta Luego

No not like that at all, we have Organisations here organising food distribution for labour. Its nt that there is no food, there is shed loads. there is just no money. if you do not mind working for a few hours you can get food and wine. there is also lots of new LETS schemes that are being officially recognised. LETS stands for labour exchange trading scheme, also known as a time bank or locally as Banco del Tiempo.

if anything we can come to learn from their downfall and learn as a society what not to do and how to prevent our economic collapse from ending in riots and catastrophic events.

This is the result of massive, MASSIVE theft by the top 1% of the top1%, bankers, wall St., and corporations have stolen from common man throwing over 100 million people into poverty world wide and causing the death of millions, probably a greater loss of life than WWII. This is not only ecomomic crime, this is genocide. See link.

people have been taking food from the bins at supermarkets in the UK for years.it got so bad beside me that they now pour blue dye in the buckets on top of any food and locking bins.they were scared about getting sued if someone got Ill eating it.

This food ?
some people dont have 5$ for bread
and when they see this .. they have a broken heart with an empty stomac
good people will not let good food go to waste
while their kids are starving

There should be a new Law against Throwing Food in the Trash Bin

Is there a law for taking it OUT of the trash bin?? Truly, starving people will take it out. I haven't seen in my era starving people in my country. I have eaten grass and dog food. I don't think many people today know what starving really is. Just more dramatics. However, there are truly starving people, they don't have trash bags to dig through.

again, I am for local power and people organizing...

but if those corporations shut down, by force, people will go hungry. You won't see farmers going to give the food away for free and if those jobs are lost then people will have other problems to deal with...

Look at what happened in Argentina when the IMF and World Bank imploded their economy and basically robbed them in the night.

The people took over. They opened up the farms, the factories, the warehouses. They took back the businesses they had been employed by and started again for themselves.

I have no doubt there was suffering to a degree, struggle is a part of life. But it has been proven that in times of emergency people pull together, neighbours help each other, communities become tighter.

Businesses are already closing. Corporations fail every day. People are made unemployed every day. What happens to all those people? Why is it acceptable for people to remain in poverty on minimum wage for a functioning corporation rather than destroying that corporation and building something new, with the same level of struggle?

If those corporations fail, businesses will replace them. Those businesses will grow fast, and they'll need employees. The gap between the collapse of a corporation and their smaller replacements springing up to take their place is a matter of weeks.

I say bring it on. Let those corporations collapse, because there are still another twenty small family businesses operating in the background able to replace them over night and genuinely contribute to the betterment of the community,

This just in an English language newspaper in Adalucia. Snr Gordillo and his group had already squatted land to grow their own food but were evicted last week. Lots of coverage on the local news and just about everyone is on the side of the Sindicate.

Robin hood is a name which appeals to the english speakers but Snr Gordillo would be closer to Bigmaker but to me in local Andaluz it sounds like Gordito, which means "littlebig". I never realised till i saw his name written down.

Remember that movie?
www.theolivepress.es... -hood-of-spain-refuses-to-testify/

‘Robin Hood’ of Spain refuses to testify

The town Marenaleda is an anarchsocialist collective, Gordillo has been the Mayor for 30 years. There is NO police force, everyone looks after the village maintaining the roads and infrastructure.
It is the ONLY place in the entire region not saffected by a housing problem. Squatting is not frowned on but you are expected to legitimise your dwelling, ie Buying it. Crazy until you hear you can BUY not rent a house For 15 euros a MONTH. There are plenty of empty properties and the town looks favourably on alternative and sustainable technology.

Heres a quote from Gordillo in 2009

"They all thought that the market was God, who made everything work with his invisible hand. Before, it was a mortal sin to talk about the government having a role in the economy. Now, we see we have to put the economy at the service of man."
