They are "real", only they come from underground labs not outer space. And it's pretty obvious why they would choose to spread fantastical stories rather than come out with the truth right away. How would the religious fundamentalists react if they knew genetic experimentation on humans has been going on for more than 30 years already?

Even though I may be wrong, these "Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean" sound like bull# to me.

There's strange lore across every culture on Earth. I don't know. On the other hand, I still know the British have been messing with genetic engineering for decades. I still smell French Intelligence running the Rael cult, as they have ran other UFO cults. So, you have been warned.
