The release I read said that he died from an infection of a "pressure wound".

It seems more and more people are succumbing to infections.

Stem cells aside, what "infection" killed superman?

People don't realize how fragile these sweet people are. The major causes of death (and I mean root causes) are kidney failure and bed sores. Superman was killed by a bed sore (a.k.a. a "pressure" sore) that caused an infection that was more than his weak body could fight.

Bed sores have to be constantly avoided and are always a major concern. Special mattresses, both for beds and chairs, have to be used to attempts to avoid them. But they are so easy to get anyway. I remember my nephew getting one just because he got a new pair of sneakers...the sneakers were too tight and weeks of weeks of time were spent fighting a pressure sore on his heel.

Moxyone, when we (someone not paralyzed) feels the least discomfort, or our body recognizes a compromised position (reducing circulation, etc) we simply move (even in our sleep). Someone with a neurological deficit that impedes any sensation (could be from a spinal cord injury or disease such as MS, or even Cancer), doesn't "recognize" this problem (and even if they did, they can't do anything about it without a caregivers help), the tissue in question necrotizes (dies) and becomes susceptible to infection (much as a Diabetics lower extremities are susceptible to Gangrene or Osteomyelitis), and require amputation. If this infection spreads beyond the local area of necrotic tissue it becomes a systemic infection which can then attack any, and all organs within the body (remember a quadriplegic is not going to have a strong cardio-pulmonary system, nor is their lymphatic system, which is an important part of the immune system, healthy because of the lack of activity). Couple this with the strain that high levels of antibiotics can put on the body, and you have the unfortunate scenario that has befallen the late Christopher Reeve.
