The real worry the US has is the same problem everyone has always had when it comes to China........... secrecy is built into the Chinese way of life, no-one really knows for sure what China has actually got, even the CIA have to estimate how much undeclared spending China is actually using on its military.

China,Russia, The USA, Briton, and the scadanavian countries are well dug in, as is germany after the ww2 constructions.....

Actually the UK has decommissioned 95 % of its underground hardened shelters and bunkers , most of it was done at the end of the Cold War , when we cut back heavily on all Military spending,

for some reason our short-sighted politicians and ministers could only see immediately in front of them ,
even though many ,many Scientist`s, Engineers and Military advisers (including myself ) warned that it was NOT a good idea to get rid of all our protected facilities.

Hell we don't even have any hardened utilities any more !! let alone Military ones !!

Ha, security is a bit of a joke in the UK, isn't it?

The building I work in is classed as "critical" to the national infrastructure and we manage the BBC Transmission network as well as the National Grid telemetry network, plus a myriad of other large corporations. What have we got for security? A few doors with swipe card access, a perimeter alarm which is set off by foxes so is generally ignored and a lonely security guard (several of which are former Soviet soldiers....)

All it would take is a small group of lightly armed jihadis to burst in and the country goes dark...

America doesnt need to destroy the roads or bunkers, heres why: how long do you think those fifties and sixties era fighters that make up over two thirds of china's fighter force, which is smaller than the U.S.'s, would last againts F-18's, F-22's, and F-35's.

you are right Stu,

it is a shame as we had some of the best facilities until the cut-backs.
its also odd as other countries have still kept theirs. and others are even building new ones.

this makes it harder for them to launch them at a fast speed/pace. They can be in turn trapped in side and yes despite what the article says there are weapons powerful enough that can blown through or severely damage the structure underneath if enough missiles or bombs are dropped/launched. Also what if it was nuclear? than again that depends entirely upon its yield to weight ratio and yield settings. It would be better to have your air force in hangars and protected by state of the art missile defense systems and if an attack was coming you could easily launch your air craft to avoid the strike that would come and destroy the base.
