I figured when people go out and eat they rather their waiter was gay or foreign, does this lady not know the protocols?

She's probably offended when she finds out her gardener is Guatemalan.

Acceptance and Change requires individuals to take a stand on Equality.

In 1959, Sammy Davis, Jr. and his fellow "Rat Packers", Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop broke more racial barriers while filming Ocean’s Eleven. Before and after their Copacabana Room shows at the Sands (site of today’s Venetian), the Rat Pack visited crap tables at casinos along The Strip. If a casino resort would not let Sammy in, Sinatra told them we’re not coming in. Given all the press the Rat Pack was generating worldwide before the film’s release, no casino resort wanted to be photographed turning away Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop at the height of their careers. The casinos relented and Sammy became a guest. Sinatra and Sammy also did several Copacabana acts poking fun at segregation. Sinatra, who was loved by, if not connected to the mob, enabled them to get away with it and he convinced many in the Hollywood community to take a similar stand for integration of The Strip. Only God knows how many times Sinatra put in a word that saved Sammy’s hide. www.soulofamerica.com...

I donno about this. If the restaurant refused to serve a gay person client, then that would clearly be discrimination.

The reason is that "money" is supposed to be used to "buy" a service that you want to buy.

But, someone "refusing to buy" something because it's being served by a gay person is not discrimination. It's their money, they can spend it wherever they want. Shucks, some guys only go to Hooters to "buy" food just because the servers there are all "girls who wear skimpy outfits." They choose to "buy" their service from certain kinds of people who give them additional pleasure in the eating ritual. If the waiter is a fat slob, that makes you feel sick ordering from him, I'd think the customer is within their rights to ask for another waiter. Some people always ask for certain waiters in particular restaurants, simply because they like the service they get from that particular guy or gal. It might be the smile, or knowledge of the wines, or whatever. But, the buyer allways has the right to spend his money as he/she sees fit. I'm sure there are gay guys who prefer to be served by other gay men, it's only natural. The restaurant should have met the customer's request, if it were possible.

Refusing to sell someone something because of who they are is discrimination, but refusing to buy is not.

You cannot force someone to buy, by law. Of course, the Gov is now forcing people to buy Health Insurance, but that is a new development. It probably will be repealed with the next president. If however, we set a trend, that we can coerce people to buy products and services that they don't want to buy, then either there would be a revolution, or mass exodus of people from the land.

That's funny because our cooks are Guatemalan. The owner is Slavik(I forget which country), the GM is Sicilian, and I am hispanic and white. We have the league of nations there. We also have a Jamaican.

Usually stupid people don't bother me, but this time I have to blow of some steam. So here's my rant.
Today at the restaurant I manage I walked from the office out to the floor to see one of my best severs of six years in tears. I asked what was wrong, and found out from the others that the lady requested a different server because the one she had was gay. I talked to the server and found that she had told him that he is going to hell for being gay. Luckily the owner was there. As I approached the owner to tell him that I was going to ask the lady to leave if she did not stop making comments like that to my staff or to anyone in general, she got up to leave. She was by herself and walked passed the owner and me saying "I will never eat here again, I'm going to Chick-Fil-A!!" My reply was "Good, Get Out!" The owner was shocked until he got the full story and went to the parking lot to 86 her for good. But she was already in her car and hopefully never coming back.
I have seen racism but never hate towards homosexuals first hand. I was upset after seeing a good person crying after experiencing pure hate. And I am still bothered like it happened to me personally. I even gave him a one arm hug. Which was not smart because he started crying again, making me feel like crying. He said "If a straight Christian man like you can hug me and accept me, why can't these other people?" And all I can say was "There are idiots in every group of people, that's just life. F 'em." I wonder what would have happened if the current events involving Chk-Fil-A weren't in the news. I bet this lady would have not said a word.
Rant Over. I feel a little better now. Luckily this sever will not quit over this incident. BUT our restaurant is in a very wealthy, far right wing, Mormon part of town. I see this happening again as the whole Chik-Fil-A gets more attention.

Why is anyone accepting this as truth? Guarantee the OP is a Chick Fil A hater because no one just screams Im going to Chick Fil A, when there has been homosexuals making out in front of the building. WTF is wrong with you people? Not to mention the fact that there is other places that have followed suit. Wendy's being one. So, why Chick Fil A? Why not Wendy's? And if she didn't know her server was gay...what makes her assume other restaurants have gay servers? Chick Fil A has gay servers. Dont freakin lie because your butt hurt about the draw back of the protests. Crap happens. GET OVER IT! I go where the food taste good and doesn't cause a heart attack after eating.

I'm not sure what to say besides thanks for the laugh.

Inside I could probably guess why but I would not have asked any questions and done what was asked. But she had to put her 2 cents in and hurt someone that didn't deserve it. That is possibly the main reason I am still upset.

If that lady had a problem with her server she could have told me and I would have had someone else take the take her, it's that easy. But she insulted an employee directly to their face. I have seen patrons kicked out of restaurants and bars for less.

Ok. I get it. You'd accomodate someone who said black people smell weird and so I want a white one? Maybe I am missing the point - happens a lot to me...

No I am saying I would accommodate any request as long as they are not insulting my staff. And yes over the years I have seen patrons kicked out for being insulting and they were just a holes, not prejudice, just every day real world a holes.

But i take it if she had told you (management) she didn't like a gay person serving her you would have been ok getting her straight person - why?

Okay since it has been a couple days and I have had to think about this issue a little more. Now I would say yes to her request if it was said the way you stated it and were only between her and me. I understand that it is her right to feel that way, but the second she crosses the line and insults an employee and causes a scene then I have to take some sort of action wheter it's asking her to stop or to leave.

Exactly.
Stand up for your principles, the consequences be damned!!
She was wrong, and you did the right thing...

No worries, lay your head on your pillow tonight with a clean conscience.

ETA: This story sounds a bit manufactured. If it is not, no offense, just sounds pretty made up is all. I say this as a former waiter/bartender and as someone who usually sniffs out made up stories.

People are really bad now. I believe this story because this happened to me over my religion. A customer came in and began chewing me out for the symbol on my neck because it was for a religion that wasn't his. He's done this to me twice now, telling me I'm going to hell and that I'm confused for not being Christian. He even told me I need to go to school to learn about God.

I respect his right to tell me that and I respect that he is happy with his religion but it's uncalled for to be ridiculed by the customer. Especially because they know you can't retort.

Needless to say, I made sure he got crushed fortune cookies.

You don't have to put up with that crap, your boss should tell the person to leave you alone or just leave. May I ask what religion you are? No worries if you'd rather not. I'm just curious (nosey).

I'm Wiccan and proudly sport a pentacle on my neck. He asked me what it was and I explained. But he was obviously ready to say what he said before asking.
