Romney Campaign unable to back up their candidate’s claim against Obama, RE: Military

Romney’s spokesman, Ryan Williams, in an interview Saturday could point to no place in Obama’s lawsuit that seeks to restrict the rights of military voters…

Romney’s legal counsel, Katie Biber, said creating two separate classes of Ohio voters does not violate the 14th Amendment, though she also did not offer evidence that Obama’s lawsuit would make it tougher for members of the military to vote…

Source: Romney Smears Obama, Falsely Claims He Filed Lawsuit To Restrict Military Voting In Ohio

Not only could they not point out the part of the Obama campaign's lawsuit that would in any way "restrict military voting", the Romney campaign then proceeds to prove that the GOP voter-suppression tactics are indeed creating "two separate classes" of voters - a violation of the 14th amendment! (where are the defenders of the constitution now?)

The Obama lawsuit is attempting to restore voting rights for all Ohioans, not restrict them for the military or any other group. From the Obama lawsuit, filed in federal court:

Plaintiffs bring this lawsuit to restore in-person early voting for all Ohioans during the three days prior to Election Day – a right exercised by an estimated 93,000 Ohioans in the last presidential election. Ohio election law, as currently enacted by the State of Ohio and administered by Defendant Ohio Secretary of State, arbitrarily eliminates early voting during the three days prior to Election Day for most Ohio voters, a right previously available to all Ohio voters.

Even Fox News acknowledges the purpose of the suit, noting “the lawsuit does not restrict the ability of military personnel to cast their ballots early.”

The claim "Obama Campaign Sues to Restrict Military Voting" is another bogus fabrication by Brietbart.com and wingnuts on the far right.

The fact that Mitt would repeat this lie means either he or his staff are stupid, or they both think voters are stupid. If Romney can't understand the facts here, how would he handle complex foreign situations?

Well, as Republican Grover Norquist said, all that's needed to be a Republican POTUS is "Pick a Republican with enough working digits to handle a pen to become president of the United States." source

I guess GOP vetting consists of, "Here's a pen and paper. Please sign your name for us."

They are attempting to make them equal, which means give early voting to everyone, OR remove it from the military. If Ohio doesn't want to do it for everyone the Obama White House wants them to remove it from the military. Very plain as day.

Did you even read your source? This is what it says.

However, the National Guard Association and other military groups have fired back, saying it's "offensive" for Democrats to suggest in the lawsuit it's arbitrary for service members to get special consideration.

"I'm just outraged by this," Mike DeWine, the Republican state attorney general in Ohio, told Fox News. "I can't believe the Obama campaign and the state Democratic Party are actually saying there's no rational basis for a distinction between someone who is in the military voting and someone who is not in the military."

Then we have this.

When Democrats tried to block some military ballots in Florida during the contentious recount of 2000, it was a political and public relations disaster -- until then-Vice Presidential nominee Joe Lieberman intervened.

So here is the question, if Ohio does not want to extend early voting for whatever reason, the logical conclusion is that Obama is saying it MUST be stripped from the military as well. He is clearly NOT for the military having an extended voting period beyond non military personel.

Sorry Charlie, there's nothing in the lawsuit whatsoever that seeks to REMOVE any voting rights of any group.

You are engaging in right-wing double speak. The lawsuit is only seeking to RESTORE all voting rights to all Ohio citizens. It does not seek to remove early voting to the military.

The GOP removed early voting rights for some Ohioans. Obama is seeking to restore those rights. Plain and simple.

FTR, Fox "News" even declared this a dumb argument on the part of the Romney campaign and right-wingers.

They can be outraged all they like. The truth has that effect, because it is an arbitrary decision. The entire thing would be nonexistent had this been a new law altogether. The entire basis of this lawsuit is and always has been Ohio voters everyone of them had access to these days for early voting. It was then arbitrarily decided that now only the military gets these days to vote early on the heaviest early voting days. This is the Republican Party can't win on policy so is now doing everything it can to win by messing with election law.

Why is early voting needed? I've never voted early. The only truth is that every group has the same voting rights. An exception was made to our brave men and women who sacrifice their lives for us. They have a valid excuse. I am too lazy to sit in line is not a valid excuse. The truth is that Obama feels like his voters are lazy and won't come out. The truth is he IS asking for restrictions placed on military voters, as he is giving them two options. One is to extend it to everyone, the alternative option he gives is to restrict the military to the same days as everyone else.
