Missile Defense Staff Warned to Stop Surfing Porn Sites

www.bloomberg.com

The Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency warned its employees and contractors last week to stop using their government computers to surf the Internet for pornographic sites, according to the agency’s executive director.

I am frankly surprised that the sites are not blocked in the first place. Most private sector and government sector browsers block harmful and/or content based websites. This is scary if such websites are easily accessible to an agency such as the MDA. I just hope they're not responsible for launching anything while busy surfing the web.

Its probably virus worries rather than content concerns.

Poor bastards workin' the silos are going to have to go polish the real rockets now . . . .

Seriously, though . . . you'd figure that'd be high on the IT folks list in setting up the infrastructure . . . some great planning in the old administration there, eh?

Will something be headed the way of porn surfers?

It is the largest consumer of bandwidth after all. Perfect way to get maximum penetration.

Why are government computers and/or people on the government clock screwing around on the web including ATS.

So much for earning one's pay.

I've worked in Govt for 30 yrs, military and civilian. I've never been on a govt network that DIDN'T block porn sites, YouTube, dating sites, etc.

It makes me wonder how they're able to access these sites on Govt computers.

I guess so. Generally majority of the IT work is handled by contractors including crucial infrastructure work. I wonder if they are handling the network and infrastructure tasks internally upto a major extent? Not that it cannot work. But it can certainly work when the liability is delegated to a private contractor to handle this aspect.

I wonder if people could use porn sites as a vector to get viruses into our missile defense systems?

That would be scary.

Hey, these are the people with their fingers on the button.

Give them porn, i say! Gotta be one hell of a nervewracking job if you have any sense of humanity. I want them calm and relaxed as possible.
I dont want sexually frustrated people in that position!

Most of the porn sites are hosted by organized crime systems in, you guessed it, the Russian Federation.

Consequently, if they're actually able to get to the porn sites, which I highly doubt, they're breaching security in the worst of all possible ways. Organized cyber criminals in Russia are part of their non-state cyber militia and closely coordinated with the state.

If this was actually happening, they need a house cleaning, and they should start with the commander overseeing his security chief not doing his job.

you would think that systems designed to manage the goverment defense would be in a closed circuit so to speak to keep malicious code from piggybacking into system and taking control of it.

There's always ways around blocking. Kinda scary if they are looking at those sites. Best way to get a virus is surf porn sites.
