Oh boy! More people taking exception with an out-of-context quote! This does not reflect well on their intelligence.
Really? How much does the speech writer make per year to do his/her job?
They should have ensured tha such 'out-of-context' quote is not slipped into the speech (if indeed the POTUS was using the speech on his own).

That. Doesn't. Even. Make. Sense.

'out of context' means someone took something from a larger body of work, removed it from it's context and presented it as if it means something other than it actually meant.

And you are blaming Obama (or his speech writer) for it?

Seriously?

edit on 2-8-2012 by stanguilles7 because: (no reason given)

I keep hearing the "out of context" excuse, but the entire context of his speech was to be critical of those who want less taxation and less government expenditures and telling them that they need to be quiet and accept more taxation because taxation (in his mind) enabled the success. The context of that individual speech, every other speech, and the actions of the administration as a whole are exactly what he has been criticized for.

Obamas overall idea is that government came first and that you can not succeed without it. Most people disagree with this premise. Businesses came FIRST. There had to be profits FIRST before any taxes were paid to build infrastructure. Henry Ford didn't build cars because there were all these empty roads and bridges sitting empty everywhere. The government can do nothing without the private sector. Even the military is supplied by private sector companies.

For the love of GOD...somebody please think for a moment.

Government....of the people, by the people, for the people,

The Government in a free democracy...our system of government that we created that the world has emulated....is a government OF THE PEOPLE.

PEOPLE = Government.

Government is a pooling of resources and money to do the things we can not do as individuals.

The USA has always had a streak of "Individualism"...and that rocks. It spurs innovation...

But the West was settled not just due to the brave individuals who set off into the wilderness, but also in wagon trains. Food, shelter, protection...safety in numbers.

There is a balance...individualism and "United We Stand"

But what right wing rhetoric has done is molested the themes of "individualism" and "United"

They have made government = socialism...

Government is the people...and when it is not...we change our government, every couple of years - not eliminate it....because that just destroys our way of life.

I agree and I'm fully aware. However how much power do you think the people REALLY have regardless of what the constitution indicates ?
Lets be real.

I don’t usually engage in online debates because you all don’t know me from a hole in the ground, but since a few people decided to pick apart my first response here we go...

1) This is from Fox News and they in no way sku a story to fit their point of view.

2) Did not say he was misquoted, said it was taken out of context. For those of you unsure as to what that means:
wiki.answers.com...

3) Never said Obama writes his own speeches, don't think GW did either, don't think most POTUS write their own speeches; that only happens on the "West Wing"

4) Don't care if they used a speech or phrase from a speech given by someone else, this OP was about a man’s response to Obama's out of context quote.

5) Show me a business that was built in a vacuum and has no customers that is successful, every one gets help or inspiration at one point or another.

6) Who allowed people to build roads? I know, where I live, when a road needs paved the locality responsible (city/state/fed whoever) takes in sealed bids and gives the job to the lowest bid (I have always loved the lowest bid part
)

7) I don't think Obama was taking credit away from business owners; he was just trying to say what I stated in my first post.

8) Never said people did not make up the gov't, we the people just keep arguing over this little stuff while TPTB laugh there rich arses off at us while we squabble list first graders. It's cheep entertainment for them.

9) To reiterate, because I see y'all missed it the first time, I'm voting for Clifford the Big Red Dog and his veep Barney the Purple Dinosaur don’t like Obama or Mitt the Twit

You a Redditor? I saw that and was going to post it.

I still can't get enough of how Romney's entire campaign hangs on a grammatical misstep. He is grasping at straws, can't give a solid answer, and just makes the rest of the GOP look like an even bigger joke.

Well now if there wasn't a business who paid property taxes who hired people who paid property taxes who get loans from banks that pay property taxes who hire other people just like a business does and go on and on those roads and bridges would have never been built.

But then again that is what local government does not federal they only thing federal does is rob from people in some states and leave other states blowing in the wind.

Where states with the most population have the highest cost of building then extort everyone else in the process and where union employees build that take 20 years to finish and costs overrun in the multibillions.

Or people can still continue to defend Obama and his comments and his actions that are straight from the Chinas playbook.

Throw billions and billions in to building ghost cities that have no life and just move on to the next "best thing".

Obama didn't build this country someone else did just like that business owner and the millions just like him

Therefore "you did not build that" is saying that you did not go out and build the road, you did not build the building that your business is in (you may have paid to have it built but you did not physically build it).

What about the guys who built road building businesses?
What about the guys who had businesses clearing, surveying, and planning the roads?
Or the guys building building building businesses? (ha! what a cool sentence)

Everybody builds on what has been built before them.
That in no way lessens their accomplishment, and full credit should be given.
Even in context, Obama was wrong.

Finally someone who gets it!!! I am so sick of people saying he was taken out of context. You know what, he was. Want to know what else, it doesn't matter because his message IN CONTEXT is just as disgusting and just as wrong.

The president was needlessly insulting. He wasn’t just calling on successful people to pay more in tax but was being dismissive of their accomplishments.

This is what Obama said, not taken out of context whatsoever.

I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

The President is struck by people who are proud of their accomplishments!! It was disgusting, IN CONTEXT. Regardless of what someone else did to help, success does have a personal component, we should laud that personal component not denigrate it, while also acknowledging the help we all receive.

Thoughts/Comments/Opinions/Viewpoints please.

Awesome that he can take credit for huge government contracts that helped to build his business like that. Did he build that roads and power grid that he uses or did he not hear what Obama said either? The last guy ended up agreeing with Obama and that is why they pulled his ad.

Govt exists by money from tax, to pay tax you have to earn it first , hence businesses came first.

Now with over bloated coffers , the political skimster class can get to work.

Thats what I was attempting to indicate first. The people and the businesses came first and then came the government after the occupiers were kicked out. It can go on forever as per what came first but in actuality, its the people that pay the taxes keep the government going.

"I built this business without gov't help.

He didn't though. It's nice for him to believe that but just because he didn't see the road being built or the disbanding of the power companies or the break up of the telecom monopoly 30 years ago doesn't mean his business magically prospered on its own without past and current government intervention.
