Well it's their country, they can do what they want.

Or is "liberty" just for people who don't want to pay their taxes?

Yeah, I noted that above. My main confusion is him referencing the mayan calender. Is that a popularly held mythology in Bolivia? I thought it was more of a rich american hippie thing.

I was wrong. Bolivians are mostly descendants of the Incas.

The reference to the calendar is symbolic.

He probably didn't think he had to. He probably wasn't expecting some conspiracy nutters to come along and take his words completely out of context.

Again, the guy's actual words on the subject, in reference to '2012':

“The twenty-first of December 2012 is the end of selfishness, of division. The twenty-first of December has to be the end of Coca-Cola and the beginning of mocochinche (a local peach-flavored soft drink),” Choquehuanca told reporters at a political rally for Bolivia’s president, Evo Morales. “The planets will line up after 26,000 years. It is the end of capitalism and the beginning of communitarianism,” he added.

www.forbes.com...

So, again, who here has taken his words 'out of context'? Defend your statement.

I find it very odd that an official government spokesperson makes references to an American new age mythology, instead of listing the myriad valid compalins with coca cola's business practices.

Bolivians are ancestors of the Maya.

Nope. His words were (in part):

“The planets will line up after 26,000 years. It is the end of capitalism and the beginning of communitarianism,” he added.

What makes you get the impression any here in this thread has stated otherwise?

Sheesh, the straw men in here might catch fire, they're so over-packed.

How is any of that supposedly "Anti-American"?

IT'S SYMBOLIC FFS. Nothing more than a marketing ploy. My god man.

Well, when you make ridiculous comments like this is somehow "Anti-American" and that it is some form of Mayan new-age nonsense as opposed to a simple marketing ploy, what the hell do you expect?

Don't make baseless claims and you won't be jumped all over.

Yes but the planets do line up, according to the Mayan calendar, on that day. The calendar cycle comes to an end. That is not "pop-culture myth."

They are choosing that day to kick out Coke because of the symbolism of the calendar; ie the end of an era and beginning of a new era.

Just wanted to quote this again to make sure the OP reads and fully understands this.

Their president is bat isht crazy. He is an indigenous activist that somehow convinced the entire indigenous population to vote at once for him.

He then kicked the DEA out and let the coca flow. Ruined his country and caused massive inflation.

He is Yanky-paranoid. The "USA is out to get you and that is why your lives suck, vote for me"...types.... He also has illiterate ministers. His motto is, "at least we are honest",

no, his entire tribe drives ridiculous cars and lives in insane mansions. He has one city, where my friend is from. It is considered the Miami of Bolivia because the most wealth is concentrated there. So out of resentment the president publicly and openly makes them second class citizens. He is a declared enemy.Half of them left the country with their wealth and the other half don't even let him enter the city. Like if a guy from Boston became president and he couldn't even enter NY. A city in his own country. Because he says they are bastards he hates.

He is insane. Crime, poverty, inflation, drug trade, just all hell on the rise has been his legacy since even before the crisis.

Insane people rule the world.

No. Not symbolic. The planets line up every year. He's making explicit reference to the idea that dec 21 2012 is the beginning of a new era, which is pop new age pholosophy.

"“The twenty-first of December 2012 is the end of selfishness, of division. "

You clearly didnt even read the article.

No he did not. We read the article and what you are doing is mistaking your OPINION for fact.

What is 'pholosophy' btw? I'm curious....

Not a day goes by without some feeble-minded socialist offering yet another serving of their delusional lose-lose philosophy. "Lets ban coke and await the mayan enlightenment".

I've said this a hundred times but will say it again.

Rejecting capitalisim does not mean socialisim. Has the thought crossed your mind that a entirely new way of doing things might be possible? A system that does not yet have a name.

People are so quick to cry 'Socialisim' or 'communisim'. think outside the box for a change.

All current systems of government are flawed so it only makes sense to try and develop a new, better system.

Capitalisim is not sustainable and must be done away with. Accept it.

Adapt or perish.

That is a direct and explicit reference to the new age philosophy of jose argueles, who started the whole "Mayan 2012 " thing.

huffingtonpost and Russia Today as Sources
i thought you said once that Russia Today is a Russian Government propaganda mouthpiece? if it so why are you using it then?

And this isn't really breaking alternative news it should be moved to the 2012 subsection.

Yes, but he said: "It is the end of capitalism and the beginning of communitarianism,”, so you can see why someone might think he is referring to a form of socialism, right?

Oh, and his political party, the ruling party, is the... wait for it..."Movement for Socialism"

Good point... But, i was commenting more on the trend and the specific comments then any content of the article.

it's just something i've noticed happens a lot.

it's true though, that i should have been a bit clearer, i was thinking out loud more then anything.

While they're at it they should expel Walmart and any large banks involved in the LIBOR scandal.

Saying that something is "Anti-American" and "New Age Hippy Mayan" over and over again does not make it so. You are reading it an entirely different way to most other people and making a mountain, nay - a PLANET, out of a molehill.
