'End of capitalism': Bolivia to expel Coca-Cola in wake of 2012 Mayan 'apocalypse'

In a symbolic rejection of US capitalism, Bolivia announced it will expel the Coca-Cola Company from the country at the end of the Mayan calendar. This will mark the end of capitalism and usher in a new era of equality, the Bolivian govt says.

“December 21 of 2012 will be the end of egoism and division. December 21 should be the end of Coca-Cola,” Bolivian foreign minister David Choquehuanca decreed, with bombast worthy of a viral marketing campaign.

This is some fascinating political posturing. The Mayan calender? Seriously?

I'm not sure his angle, other than local politics and anti-american sentiment. I seriously doubt they bolivian government is actually rejecting 'capitalism', especially considering they havent banned ""Coca-Colla" which is a locally-produced energy drink

I think it probably has a lot to do with Coca Colas rampant abuse of Bolivias water supply more so than rejecting all things capitalist.

Not a day goes by without some feeble-minded socialist offering yet another serving of their delusional lose-lose philosophy. "Lets ban coke and await the mayan enlightenment".

Yea that is strange to see a leader intertwine the Mayan transition into politics. I like the way he conveys a new attitude instead of the end o times on the 21st. I too hope for a new era of some kind of goodness. So, naturally I considered motive here, beyond his explanation, and 2 thoughts came to mind. One, there is only room enough in that country for one 'coke' supplier.
And two, maybe he has friends at Mocochinchi?

You should know that Bolivia under Morales pretty much nationalised everything, forced farmers to sell localy and not export, controls the price of commodities and pretty much helps eliminate poverty from his society.

He is your typical socialist.

Also Bolivia has a state owned drink, which is a rip off off Coca Cola but obviously uses coca leaves, thus boosting production. Eliminating Coca Cola helps Boliva economicaly and socialy as the real proffits are not being funneled back to wall street and out of bolivia.

Yeah, I noted that above. My main confusion is him referencing the mayan calender. Is that a popularly held mythology in Bolivia? I thought it was more of a rich american hippie thing.

Sure. It it's winter solstice up here. But he is not referring to the solstice when he says:

“December 21 of 2012 will be the end of egoism and division. December 21 should be the end of Coca-Cola,”

Thats a direct reference to the theories spread by those 'con men', as you say.

Coke has been documented in a few countries doing this. Bolivia has one of the worst water problems in the world. Not that outrageous, no need for "socialist/capitalist" nonsense to be tied into the story....
