Honestly, they do!

But since it's a SHTF scenario that reduces us to eating turtles, perhaps this:

Snapping Turtle Stew

2 lb Snapping turtle in pieces
1 Onion, med, sliced
2 c Celery, chopped, incl greens
1 c Lima beans, soaked overnite
3 Potatoes, diced
2 tb Butter
8 oz Potatoes, can
1/2 c Parsley, chopped
Salt & pepper to taste

It begs the question, why add 3 diced taters, then 1 8oz. can of taters? Tomatoes would balance it out a bit, and lend themselves to a more stew-like consistency.

I was reading a book about the history of the Metis and came across an interesting observation about the early days of the Canadian colonization. Apparently, the practice was to always dump the potato peelings in good soil at those places where camping was common, such as at falls or dangerous rapids and a portage of gear and canoes might take days to complete.

Potato peelings produce potato plants.

So, as the camp was used over and over every season, the potato patch would grow and the staple was ever available.
