Unknown species of giant apes discovered in Congo (from ATSNN)

As a perfect example that we don"t, by far, know every creature on the planet yet, a discovery of a new species has been made in Congo, of a kind of apes that stands 2 meters (6"6") tall and has features of both chimpansee and gorilla.





There are three controversial possibilities to explain the origin of the mystery apes:

- They are a new species of ape
- They are giant chimpanzees, much larger than any so far recorded, but behave like gorillas
- They could be hybrids, the product of gorillas mating with chimpanzees.

So now the question remains, wich is it? A brand new species, a unknown chimp species or hybrids? All 3 posiblities have incredible importance.

If the species is an old undiscovered one, it shows that there are big animals out there we haven"t layed eyes on yet, that go undiscovered for so long.

If its a hybrid, it kinda proves some parts of human evolution, as its also thought that man is a hybrid of 2 kinds of pre homosapiens species.

If its a large kind of chimps that act like gorilla"s, it also proves some parts of evolution, where branches of 1 species can form a brand new one with its own unique features and specialisations.



Lets hope africa stabilizes and more and more discoveries like this are made in the years to come. Maybe our "missing" link is found somewere, maybe we will find things we wouldn"t dare to have dreamed of before. Like some people say there might be dinosaurs still living in africa,

A stunning find, really. Over six feet tall? And they are an isolated population nonetheless, so possibly not a result of hybridization between gorillas and chimps? Ernst Mayr was a big advocate of this 'allopatric mode of speciation'. Interesting int the extreme. Hopefully they took some samples to do some genetic studies on.

So they stalk things too? I can't imagine what went thru this researchers head, a 6foot five giant unknown gang of apes stalking her in the jungle. And they left when they saw her face? Maybe they were confused, seeing an animal they weren't familiar with?

Are there reports from the natives of these creatures? Seems incredible that a large mammal of any kind was unknown for so long. Think about it, no remains found, probably very few sightings. This is a definite boost for cryptozoology, to say the least. Of course, on the other hand, they weren't found by cryptozoologists.

I think that scientists are in a difficult situation, seeing how the government doesn't really have any control over poaching and hunting. Let's hope that the government can get it's act together and make sure scientists have a safe place to study these primates.

According to local villagers, the apes are ferocious, and even capable of killing lions.

Looks like those thing are extremely powerfull, probley extremely skilled hunters to boot, I would expect then to hunt in pac. Think about pac hunting by 6'6" primates quite, and being a scientist... I'd have thoughts of J.P. Raptors

Reminds me of a paperback I read several years ago. In that story, the giant apes had been bred to guard diamond or uranium mines.

The scientist has video of the apes. I hope it's available when the report is published next week. Looking forward to it, really.

This story was posted in ATSNN as a news story and then moved to the current events forum by a reporter or editor. I do not believe there was any attempt to duplicate the story in another thread. Parallel threads are allowed on ATSNN and the regular forums.
