The nanny state is going after moms.

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

This is just beyond crazy that the the government would track every bottle of baby formula just to discourage the use of it by new mothers. Creeping socialism is being used to form a society that the government can control.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.

“It’s the patient’s choice,” said Allison Walsh, of Beth Israel Medical Center. “But it’s our job to educate them on the best option.”

Oh, mandated counseling every time you ask for formula? That really sounds like indoctrination not education? Then create barriers that to reduce use of formula by mothers? I wonder what he will do next to protect our health?

Lisa Paladino, of Staten Island University Hospital, said: “The key to getting more moms to breast-feed is making the formula less accessible. This way, the RN has to sign out the formula like any other medication. The nurse’s aide can’t just go grab another bottle.”

This program is nothing more than forced indoctrination by the government ... another step toward total government dominance!

Is it because it's expensive and those that are on public aid are incouraged off of it? I hate Bloomnuts guts, but that was the first thing that came to mind.

It's a lovely "conspiracy theory" post, and appropriate for this venue, but hospitals lock up EVERYTHING and dispense to patients when it's needed or requested... Why should baby formula be any different?

I disagree with the Bloomberg's bannings, but this is hardly a sign of "domination".

As a pro breastfeeding advocate. I have to say I think its a good idea....After years of experience, breast milk is natures way.....Have you ever seen any other mammal use a bottle filled with who the hell knows what? It has nothing to do with socialism or indoctrination. It has to do with what is natural and why women have the mammary glands in the first place....

Education is the key, many new mothers just do not know, thats all. After the info they will realize why breast feeding is preferred. BUT I do also agree it is the mothers choice, but for at least the first few weeks, natural antibodies from the mother are there to help protect the newborn in the mothers milk...

EDIT: I want to add that I am for WOMENS CHOICE!!! My choice was to breast feed because I could. I understand complications and health issues that keep a woman from breast feeding. I am a nurse after all....AND we have to lock up everything because people steal stuff all the time

I don't like anybody telling anybody what to do, I'm just a holistic type of person who believes in proper calm and encouraging education

Women should be educated about it from the moment they find out they are pregnant, not wait until they are in the birthing room...The sad thing is, our health care industry is backwards...

What a quack!

He's practicing medicine without a licence and the blowback will get him eventually.

He doesn't seem to account for the many MANY legitimate reasons women cannot, should not, or are unable to breastfeed. :

Severe illnesses, heart disease, HIV, chemotherapy, women who had breast reduction surgery, and many others will be made to feel as the "unfit mother" at the very beginning of motherhood! Some ancient Central American Indians would put the new mother and newborn in a blanket, in a secluded area so they could "bond." Bloomberg is effectively UN-BONDING new mothers. He's discriminating against persons with disabilities, handicaps and other "issues". ACLU - here we go again!

You know I'm certainly no fan of big government...but it's getting a little ridiculous with the spin given to some things. Thanks for the clear vision on this, and hope you're well.

Yes...because I'm sure all hospital staff will be entirely unable to fathom valid reasons a person might not be able or too uncomfortable to breastfeed, will not document discussions or medical history of the new mother, and will instead goosestep all over her rights and feelings.

Seriously? No.

If NY residents are that bothered by this, they can organize to lobby the government or replace it as needed. If they choose not to, then apparently this isn't a significant issue worth the bother. How about we stop inflating it *quite* so much...?

people stealing baby formula, washing machine detergent, man times are tough. Bloomberg is just trying to make an angle but they knew they had to lock up their formula and record its use anyway. if you think about it it just shows you how we are a slave society(so poor) and baby formula can be bought on the black market when it should be readily available for on the cheap(not luxury taxed). the people that are mad are in the black market sales/steals of the stuff. LOL now I'm off to load up a years worth of tide in my cart and run out the door...

I feel like this is being completely unfair! I speak from experience when I say that not every woman is able to breast feed. I feel like this is bias and discrimination!

Every woman in my family has tried to breast feed and been unsuccessful. It is heartbreaking enough not to be able to have that bond with your children, but then to add harassment and discrimination on top of that pain is just heartless in my opinion!

I understand that most women don't breast feed by choice- but that is THEIR choice and nobody else's. There are many women who through no choice of their own aren't able to breast feed, and to try to guilt any woman - no matter what her reason- for that is just WRONG!!!

Why is it that a man who has never given birth suddenly think it's his right to tell mother's what they should or should not do when it comes to the care of their babies? How dare he!!!

Okay, so you agree with the quack ... that's your problem.

But, giving stern lectures to women is certainly NOT going to help them relax enough to breastfeed - even to those who don't have medical issues. How about we yell at you every hour, on the hour for not giving particular biological donations? Would that help you relax?

I breastfed, my daughter breastfed ... so, I am talking from experience. I feel really bad for the women with HIV and the MANY other medical problems who will be DE-BONDED and made to feel like bad mothers over this quack's control over women's anatomy and choices.

I am 38 years old, I've never had a broken bone, or a cavity, I rarely get sick at all, I'm extremely attached to my mother (a momma's boy,

), and yet I never breast-fed, not once.

My wife breast-fed our two boys for about 1 month a piece, and then they were eating more than she could keep up with, so we switched them to formula. My oldest son has never gets sick, never has an issue of any sort. My youngest some issues I've talked about on ATS a lot, but they were not at all related to baby formula, they were related to him being born 3 months premature.

The point is this....... formula babies can be just as healthy, both physically and emotionally, as breast milk babies.

What a STUPID thing for a Mayor of a city to be focusing on.

By that same logic, we should do away with air-conditioning, vaccines, and baby blankets. I've never seen any wild mammals use any of those things either.

I'm also a fan of breast-milk, if the mother so desires, and if the situation is right to make it convenient, but there is not a damn thing wrong with baby formula. Baby formula has raised a bunch of very good, very healthy babies over the years.

What about removing the free formula from the gift bags? And removing all the free stuff with the formula logos?

My wife and I REALLY, REALLY appreciated all that free stuff that came home from the hospital with us, and it can be very helpful for a struggling young family. A free bag, free bottles, free formula, free blankets, etc. Those things are awfully nice and this stupid rule only hurts the young mothers that could use that free stuff.

To answer your opening, YES I agree with educating people on why breastfeeding is a better option. I agree with putting a commonly-stolen product where it cannot easily be accessed. I agree with minimizing laziness.

NO, I do not agree with yelling a patients or new mothers. I do not agree with big government control.

I DO believe this is being blown out of proportion, however.

Yes, thank you! I don't understand why any mother would choose to formula feed instead of doing it the way nature intended, unless there is some kind of unusual circumstance like she's a crackhead and the formula is actually healthier than her milk.

You don't think it's kind of a racket, getting mothers (some of which are poor!) to spend money on a nearly completely frivolous product? Why should there be a whole industry based on this exploitation? And if having too many kids at once is the reason not to breastfeed, how about doing the whole Earth a favor and limit the number of offspring you produce?
