Get started: Recession wiped out 200,000 small firms, Obama remark divides business owners

This little fact seems to point to at least part of the problem.

2008 through 2010 saw 200,000 small businesses disappear according to Census figures.

That estimates to around 3.1 million jobs lost.

Many think the small businesses are the core for employment stability.

Recession wiped out 200,000 small businesses:More than 200,000 small firms disappeared in the heart of the recession between early 2008 and 2010, according to analysis of Census figures. That loss also cost the nation roughly 3.1 million jobs over the same period, putting an ever greater strain on the economy.

House approves measure to block new regulations: House Republicans on Thursday passed a bill to prevent the government from imposing new business regulations until the unemployment rate drops to 6 percent. The measure has little hope in the Senate but continues to frame each party’s main arguments heading into the elections.

Fox News story

More than 200,000 small businesses vanished between early 2008 and 2010 -- a period covering the Great Recession and its immediate aftermath -- taking with them in excess of 3 million jobs, according to Census figures which illustrate the depth of the country's economic hole.

Data is only available until 2010, but the U.S. Census Bureau stats reveal a startling slide for America's businesses. While the country boasted 5.14 million firms with up to 99 employees as of March 2008, that number dropped to 4.92 million by March 2010 - representing a loss of roughly 223,800 businesses and 3.1 million workers.

The trend from 12 months before he was sworn in? Excluding the most recent 19 months????

"The Trend" HAS REVERSED...if the report bothered to realize it is no longer 2010.

Small Business Drives Job Growth in January 2012

Since the recovery began, small and midsize companies have been producing more jobs than their larger counterparts and creating them at a faster pace than during the recovery from the 2001 recession.

Me thinks the OP article had to work hard to come up with the claim...begining the "study" a year before Pres. Obama took office and ending it in mid-2010...a couple years ago and a big hunk of recovery ignored.

I responded to you advertisement on the other thread for this one
I seem to be the only traffick you got?

Either way Xue...Two posts in from you and you still couldn't respond with substance?

Should I take that as a tacit acknowledment that your OP is fatally flawed given it counts a year of Bush and does not count the last 19 months of the recovery?

And that every news organization that has tracked small business growth seems to agree that "The Trend" of small business failings that began in "Early 2008" under GW has in fact changed direction under Pres. Obama?

I made no mention of any politicians at all in this topic !!

I was hoping to reflect on the importance of small business and how it relates to jobs.

And, how perhaps politicians and government can influence the business climate.

here is a repeat of the questions;

Does "Big Government" correlate to "Big Company" jobs only ?

Small Government -- Small Business Jobs ?

Which is Better ?

and "Better" for WHO?

Relax !!

No. You have it backwards.

Big government means more corporate regulations, which makes it easier for smaller jobs and businesses to grow because the large corporate firms are not as able to establish effective monopolies/oligarchies that prevent small businesses from starting.

Small government means fewer regulations, allowing corporations to grow more at the expense of smaller businesses which find themselves unable to compete with unregulated global corporations.

Interesting.

I'll have to think about that.

But what about a "small" government that has enough "regulations" to stop the corporate "monopolies/oligarchies" ?
(depending on how "monopolies/oligarchies" are defined)

And what about a "Big Government" that limits "regulations" ?

Depends on terms...Bush was Big Government, in spending and reach and the current GOP are "Big Government"...Wanting to legislate values and expand military.

Is a 6000 page tax code littered with loop-holes for businesses "Big Government"...is subsidizing corporations and oil companies to the tune of Billions with taxpayer money "Big Government"? Were the Bush era bailouts for the financial industry, which Romney supported, Big Government?

Do small businesses need the government to prevent price fixing and monopolies designed to crush small competitors? Do small businesses need government to facilitate trade deals and economic diplomacy etc. etc.

Obama is not "Big Government"....Big Goverment is a red herring...we need the RIGHT sized government working for people, not corporations.
