DHAKA, Oct. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- An F-28 aircraft of Bangladesh Biman narrowly escaped a major accident when it skidded off from the slippery runway under heavy rain, at MAG Osmani International Airport in the northeastern Sylhet Friday.

Two passengers got their legs fractured and the rest received minor injuries, reported the United News of Bangladesh, a private news agency in the country.

The Sylhet-bound aircraft BG-601 from Dhaka with 79 passengers and three crew on board landed at the airport and skidded off nearly 30 yards from the runway.

Captain Shahana, who was operating the aircraft, was trapped inside the cockpit and later rescued by having the door cut.

Those injured were taken to different hospitals and clinics fortreatment, police said."

"A Bangladesh Biman aircraft has skidded off the runway in bad weather in the northern city of Sylhet, critically injuring seven people.
The Fokker F-28 careered into a water ditch at the end of the runway. Almost all of the 80 passengers and crew suffered some injuries.

Flight BG601 from Dhaka was landing in low visibility and rain.

It took six hours to cut two of the injured from the plane's cockpit, including the pilot.


The pilot was named as Shahana Akhtar and her cockpit passenger was Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, a former government adviser and former Bangladesh Biman chief."
