www.telegraph.co.uk...

Another bank having problems with it's computer systems, this time the Nationwide are taking out direct debit payments twice.

Apparently they're having some similar problems in the Netherlands too.

With this and the recent RBS outages, does anyone think it's something sinister or lowest bidder cock ups?

Having worked on big mainframes it can be a nightmare doing batch scheduling and its not very hard for someone to either add in the direct debit job by accident or to forget to remove it from the schedule as there can be thousands of jobs being run every night and these days the systems run pretty much unattended so theres no second group of people such as the operators who actually push the jobs through the systems like there used to be and who would know when something such as the direct debits was being run for a 2nd time and query it

and its not that uncommon for small balls up like DD's/mortgage payments to be ran twice and quickly and quietly fixed the next night but since the massive recent problems its just more news worthy
