Did Paterno really focus on academics?

According to this list from 2007 (the most recent I can find), the Penn State athletics program was no where near the top.

Lots of better football schools like Florida, USC, Ohio State, Texas, also had better academic ratings. Penn State barely topped Florida State (my school), and we are definitely not known for student athletes. But we do have another distinct honor in two-sport elite athlete and Rhodes Scholar Myron Rolle!!!

Penn State's football and athletic program was average, but it was not stellar, and in the wake of this outrage and coverup, they have plenty to be ashamed of.

LOL, ummmm there were not 5(plus) people involved in this scandal. The lack of institutional control rule is garbage. There is no clear definition or guidelines that determine what critera need to be met in order to be lacking institutional control. Like I said this is non of the NCAAa business.

Actually, there were probably a lot more than 5 Mandated Reporters that were REQUIRED to report this to authorities even if they didn't think the accusations were justified. There was the witness, the witnesses father, Paterno, the admin that Paterno reported to, and all others who were privy to the information in between and along the way!

There doesn't need to be a clear definition, it is clear that the system failed, and it is apparent that it failed because it was covering its own exposure to liability. If there was a definition, that would surely be the crux of it!!

The fact that it was a football coach responsible for the rape and abuse, at a football camp, and in a football locker room, and the witness was a football coach, and the victims were youth football players, and the first authority that it was reported to, and who failed to act, was the pinnacle of football authority in the university, makes it clearly NCAA business.

Not much more needs to be said.

Paterno wasn't really the problem. He told the people above him and they buried it twice. He worked for these people and when you work for someone you do as they say or you quit. If he would have gone to the police they would have somehow gotten rid of him. These colleges are supposed to be controlled by the state, they are public universities. They should clean house of all the corrupted college officials and find new ones. Then they could restore some scholarships and allow them to play unrestricted. College is supposed to be about teaching kids not glorifying football. If the college would have gotten rid of Sandusky when the first incident occured, none of this would have happened. This is all about covering up things and not taking care of problems that exist.

Paterno was part of the problem. The fact is, he was aware that a former assistant coach who had been raping kids was still employed and still holding kids football camps on the PSU campus. Paterno was definitely part of the problem. He put his own legacy and his football program above the safety of children. That's all the evidence I need.

despite all the evidence thats needed and all, now that we are judge appearantly, why not make the sentence more realistic?

should make their mascot a huge stuffed teddybear (pedobear) or something similar as a warning to children and their parents.

how can wiping the records help anything? it just makes it retarded, which it is..
punishing the entire team for the actions of the staff..
the entire school for the action of a couple members of the staff..
all in all, its still the children who will pay, starting with higher tuition, leading to the need for more funding..
its a big loop.

none of the provided sentence was a solution to anything, just another problem to be.

You are right about that. When people start to give a lot of their belief in a system, the survival of the system becomes top priority. It becomes an entity and takes control of peoples lives. This Penn State entity is a big entity and it appears having the whole community treating it as a complete necessity for their way of life. The people who were involved in the coverup should be held accountable no matter what their position. The loss of scholarships and the fine are tactics that are trying to show all colleges to stop these policies. This problem of football worship needs to be addressed country wide. Being a fan and being involved in football doesn't give a person the right to be corrupt or do immoral things. College is for teaching people a profession. It shouldn't be teaching students that immoral acts are allowable if it is good for the community and college.

Paterno is guilty of complying with the coverup but I like to investigate people above in authority when these things happen. It looks like a good house cleaning is in order. If that happens than the penalties should be adjusted.

I understand your point, but I feel it's also setting an example. Though this scandal is unique, it is telling other major universities that sports should never be put ahead of terrible acts of amorality.

When the team did well, did they build statues and paint murals of the players and students?

Or was it just the staff?

Since we all know the answer you don't have to respond, just proving the point.

A wolf in the hen house doesn't mean you start tearing away at the hen house even AFTER the wolf has been removed. The hens are the innocent students, and you're chipping away at their points of pride both in athletic achievement and employability.

Is that the way to look at it?
Or is it more like the the National Association of Henhouses taking action on one henhouse where it turned out that the rooster and top hens were tolerating a fox to come in and eat his choice of the chicks?

Maybe even look at it this way, after the fox was discovered to be eating chicks, they said we are not going to pay you any more, but we will make you an honorary hen and give you an office in the henhouse. You may continue to bring chicks in here and eat them and we will look the other way.

What should the National Henhouse Association do?

They should surround the henhouse, take the chicks and good hens out and burn the place with the bad hens in it.

Did the NCAA go too far? Not in my opinion.

-Paterno focused his players on academics. Football was not above academics to him. Heck, millions went to the library he helped fund.

So if a good teacher breaks the law, he gets a free pass?

How about a real Death Penalty for Penn State. No more football on campus and sell the stadium. Get out of the sports entertainment business totally and back into what they were supposed to be teachings, which is higher education, moral values, and high ethics standards.

Fire the Upper Administration of Penn State for too much of a good ole boy system that lost sight of academics and ethics in favor of money.

Then fire the Entire Penn State Board of Directors or Regents, whatevery their oversight panel is called there.

Then, that will be a good solid message to College Good Ole Boy systems.


If you screw up this bad, a real death penaty should apply and the end of Penn State's Sports Entertainment games.

Sounds like Penn State is going all the way to attempt to loose the issue that they allowed a coach to sexually abuse some kids in their locker rooms and showers.

The Lastest is they cut the Song "Sweet Caroline" from the play list for the games because it contained words about "touching me, touching you", which everyone around the world would have made field day out of talking about and tie in Sandusky and Paterno.


They needed to cut a lot more than one song, lots of the top leadership needs to find the door. imho
