BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The death toll in a string of bombs and other attacks in Iraq on Monday rose to 50, with at least 144 wounded, police and hospital sources said.
The explosions included car bombs in and around the Iraqi capital Baghdad and in the northern oil city of Kirkuk as well as other attacks by gunmen in the restive Diyala province.

what’s interesting about this one is many deaths were attributed to armed men shooting down fighters. It wasn't your usual back alley pop in the back of the head or dead cow bomb, it was armies clashing!

At the end of the day’s Ramadan fast at sundown two cars exploded in the Sunni-dominated town of Mahmoudiya, about 30 kilometers south of Baghdad. A car exploded around 7 p.m. in a parking lot for minibuses in the town. As emergency services sprang into action, a second car blew up, according to police at the scene.

It’s been pretty bloody, with tit4tat hits in Sunni and Shi'ite areas.

No group has claimed responsibility for the latest wave of assaults but a senior Iraqi security official blamed the local wing of al Qaeda, made up of Sunni Muslim militants hostile to the Shi'ite-led government, which is friendly with Iran.

and then they blame Iran..

"Recent attacks are a clear message that AL Qaeda in Iraq is determined to spark a bloody sectarian war," the official said, asking not to be named.

The bomb in Sadr city near 2 gov-buildings is an interesting hit..
Sadr city would be heavily defended and monitored zone, I mean its where Al Sadr's followers / leadership is located. To get 2 car bombs & drive in to the inner section of the city, close enough to hit the government buildings isn't common.
It could very well have killed or injured Sadr, they just haven't confirmed anything yet. And he'd be be one of the first people to be knocked off if something was starting.

Definitely an escalation, and not just on the battlefield.
CNN is really playing the Israeli card, interviewing young kids in the street asking them how they feel about being hunted, Peres on the tv screaming Iran, Hamas vowing to ''prevent'' not ''retaliate'' with force.

Whats worrying is Iran isnt actually sitting back any more. It seems like yes, they have started to retaliate for Syria, the scientists bombings, the sanctions and the all out possibility that its about to be setup.

Al Sadr is the peoples leader, to arrange a car bomb anywhere in Iraq would be pretty simple I think, that's why there's been a lull in real fighting since the civil war ended, a mini version of MAD via car bomb.

And for it to so quickly happen says the original rule book has been thrown out the window. Sadr and Iran are starting to force the US to confront them in Iraq.

First of all, condolences to the many innocent victims' families of those caught up in such senseless slaughter yet again in Iraq.

Secondly, something stinks in the report. It claimed it was from Al Queda. Seems like notorius Al Queda had become a legend for any murderer to push blame on for atrocities committed.

The attacks come days after a man purporting to be Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, declared a new offensive to retake areas it retreated from before US soldiers left the country last December.

"The majority of Sunnis in Iraq support al-Qaeda and are waiting for its return," the man said, according to Associated Press, in an audio message posted on militant websites.

If the Sunnis are indeed supporting Al Queda, there are most certainly not now, with the majority of them being Sunnis senselessly slaughtered.

Why would Sunni muslim brother kill another Sunni muslim brother? If this was the work of extremist Sunnis, then all Sunnis would long had been exterminated from our world by them. Is someone else stirring the pot?

Whatever it is, Iraq today is no longer a lawless land but RULED by Law, with elected legislatives and security to protect the nation. Whatever attention seeking whores that the extremists really are, they are nothing more than criminals and MUST be brought to justice.

Iraq's security or intelligence services are not competent enough, it seems, to protect Iraqi citizens. Thus they must seek for help from neutral countries to bring those criminals to justice.
